Handing over my drivers license, bank statements, bank cards, proof of employment w/ invoices to me is worth a lot more than $45.

    • +4

A driver's license and Medicare card is sufficient, but I do get your point.

    • -6

Are you enjoying life without a mobile?

    • I wouldn't be too concerned as Optus is a reputable company. However, that is a lot of documents for identification; but if it's just driver's licence and Medicare card, then that's pretty standard.

      • +2

It's not just those two. Your signing up for a plan, they usually want payg statement and proof of employment to pay the plan. There intention is to sign you up, not allow you to sign up with just a driver's licence and Medicare to obtain a free month of service….

        • Again, I think it's pretty standard as you're signing up with a telecom company and they need to preform a credit check.

    • +4

      Optus sales person here.

Definitely only need 100 points of ID to sign up (Drivers license and medicare card). No proof of employment etc needed, you will have to undergo a credit check as a new customer though, only relevant information being status of living and name of employer.
Plans are on a month to month basis, on new services you will usually be charged a month in advance also, so the first bill will likely be over the 45/60, however this is refunded when the service is cancelled, generally in cheque form via mail.

      Hope this cleared it up.

  • Is Optus any good? I'm on Telstra paying $80 for 2GB and some amount of magic money + unlimited texts. This sounds like a massive bargain to me..I mean, they can't be Vodafone bad, so how do they compare?

    • Well if Adelaide's any guide (which it is … if you live in Adelaide) subjectively Optus seems better than Vodafone but not by much. Basically there's Telstra level service (with associated higher costs) and everyone else (lower costs, lower network bars, lower data speeds, loss of service etc). Much as I hate saying it Telstra are beyond comparison (in Adelaide).

I'm assuming the price you're paying includes paying for the handset but even then compared to Telstra prepaid srevice offerings that's bloody steep. I think I was paying $30 for about that?

      • +1

On virgin mobile I resigned another 2 year contract recently (having the last 6 monts waived for free)

They use optus networks and its fairly rare I dont get coverage being mostly a metro dweller.

        Cant fault their service

      • +1

$5 handset repayment(one more month..), so not much there. It's actually an old-ish $60 plan + $15 data pack. I've always found Telstra's prepaid offerings better than their plans. Could be because I err more on the side of data usage, but I always found that odd.

Alternatively switch to Telstra prepaid. There are several options depending on whether you use more calls or data. There are a number of different offers but the standout is the Beyond Talk $50 recharge. It comes with 500 minutes and unlimited texts. You can buy a browse pack with the included credit to get 3.4GB of data all up.

Other offers and recharge levels are available, have a look here http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile-phones/prepaid-mobiles/offe…

      • This is probably what I should do. Will have to look into automatic top-ups though, I'm always bad with remembering these things.

        • +1

Automatic recharges are available (and in fact give you slightly more value as the expiry date is extended to 31 days for longer months).

You can't, however, automatically buy a new Browse Pack every month, but it only takes 20 seconds on the 24x7 app.

How much credit is included with the $50 Beyond talk? I cant find it on the site.

Currently on Vodafone Red $50. Reception is better then Virgin mobiles, but if Telstra cost about the same i wouldn't mind switching.

How much credit is included with the $50 Beyond talk?

$50. Read the Telstra Pre-paid Wiki over at Whirlpool for a better run-down of how it all works. It can be a little tricky to understand at first but can offer good value if you know how to maximise it :)

          @magicmoose:

Lol i derped… thanks for clearing that up mate.

Basically recharge $50 for beyond talk
Get "bonus" a max of 500 minutes of talk with the recharge + credit (500 minutes should be more then enough for most people)
Use the $50 credit to buy browser pack ($49 for 3Gb)

And you're good to go =)

Plus you will have an additional $1 to spend on play store XD

          Did i miss anything?

        • +2

          @ProjectZero:

          Nope that's basically it.

One thing to be aware of is that Voicemail ordinarily comes out of your recharge credit (i.e. the $50) and not the Bonus minutes. To get around this you can simply dial your own number and key in a PIN number - see the WP wiki above for how to automate this.

The WP Wiki (and FAQ) also suggests some ways you can maximise value by using $15 SIM starter kits (with varying degrees of muck-arsing around)

    www.betterlife.org.au

better value on optus 3/4g network

3gb unlimited calls SMS/MMS $39 ($33 with health care card)

6gb $49 ($43 with HCC) which I'm on and no problems

    9gb $59 ($53 with HCC)

    • +2

it doesn't mention 4G on their website.

  • How is this better than Amaysim unlimited?

    • +1

      First month free?

      • Amaysim is cheaper long term though.

    • +6

      amaysim is 3G only

      • +1

But if 4g doesn't matter to you it is ~$15/m cheaper

    • +3

betterlife (3GB) is cheaper if you do not need the additional data amaysim offers (5GB).
betterlife suspends your data use for the remainder of the month once you use up your data quota, so no unexpected overcharges.

  • +2

    No point comparing a 4G plan with a 3G one. If you are after a cheaper 3G plan that's a different thread/deal.

  • -6

does not include any international calls;;;;;; :( :( vodafone does

    • +3

Bit harsh to downvote 5GB of free data because it doesn't include international calls ;)

    • +1

National or international. First you need reception to make calls.

    • +2

A solution would be to use the 5Gb of data on Viber, Skype etc. and get international calls…

      • +1

Yes. But also applies to needing reception for data too.

  • +1

    It's free, nuff said!

  • -1

isnt this the same free calls and same amount of data that amaysim offer, using same network, but this is more expensive, but if the 5gb is on 4g network then this would be an ok value deal.

  • +1

I'm with Telstra and their 4g has started to suck. http://www.speedtest.net/my-result/a/1012732955

    • +1

I think my worst one so far with Vodafone 4G is this

Normally download is just shy of 40mbps

      P.S. I'm in Sydney

      -EDIT-
This seems interesting too, if not abit old.

    • I normally get much better than that on Telstra.

Also, fast speeds are worth squat if you lose coverage :) I have found Telstra to be much more consistent with fewer coverage holes, even in metro areas. In rural areas there is no comparison…

      • +1

The speeds just like reception really depends on where you are, as well as hardware used. I always have to laugh when people compare their own personal case ( which is relevant to them ), without talking in broader terms such as whole suburbs or regions. Often, one company will fare better in one valley, and another over the horizon. If you travel and move around a lot,

Telstra by far has the best service, for individual specific areas, just do your research to see who provides best suitable service with coverage/speeds ( daytime usually different to nights ) to suit, according to your budget. Sounds simple, but usually requires fair amount of careful experiments and research to get it right. And then six months later a new tower goes up, lucky for people on prepaid :-) My rant!

  • +1

Seems like a great deal for anyone who makes a lot of phone calls.

For me however, I'm on the $29 (now $30) Woolworths mobile plan.
5gb data, $220 call credit (any numbers), $250 optus credit (optus-optus only) and $30 premium credit (premium purchases+any numbers). I've never gone under $100 call credit left, even with the odd international call. Unless it's for a business mobile or you make a damn lot of calls, I'm not sure unlimited is required.

  • I picked this up yesterday. Needed to get away from Vaya so this gives me a free month to work where I go next. First time on 4G. 50Mbps is stupid fast. Fun to watch but uses 60Mb at a time.

  • +2

Optus Prepaid $2 Days works out to 15GB/mnth for $60 on 3/4G (Unlimited Talk/TXT). Only downside is 500mb limit per day. But you can get an extra 500mb each day if you pay another $2. Not sure if the offer is still open to new customers, but I've been on it for about 5 months and it's brilliant!

  • I think 4G is dangerous on current quota limits. I'll stick with my Amaysim $45 / month plan which is essentially the same plan on the same network except it's only 3G.

Amaysim is also the only mobile provider I've found that gives up to the minute data quota reports. None of the "24 hours to update" crap that all of the other providers seem to have.

  • i hope to stack this with the amex $20 CREDIT OFFER. SO does anyone know if you cancel after 30 days will the refund cheque be prorated or you need to pay the full month in advance forfeiting the remaining credit balance?
