My good friend MM, congratulations on a fantastic milestone. You're a credit to both yourself and the OB community.
Thanks for 500 fantastic deals, and looking forward to plenty more from you. You really are a shining light. Well done!

  • +4

Good work MM .. Keep those great deal coming

    • +2

      Thanks EC

      • +4

Hopefully 500 or more votes for your 500th deal

  • +35

Hmm not sure how I feel about my life being in the hands of a 1 cent Ozbargain mountain climbing clip!

    • +5

Come on kearnsy, get into the spirit of the deal (& MM's celebration). Just use it to hold some rope together on your trailer.

      • +8

Ok you won me over! But if I plunge to a gruesome death at least I can hold my head up high knowing I upvoted monty's 500th post :)

        • +4

          Cheers buddy.

        • "Not suitable for holding head high"

    • I guess this could be useful to hold up my boxing bag.

    • +1

@kearnsy: your life? I thought we all bought this item as a gift for our "best" friends :)

  • +2

    Thanks MM, got one.

These are great to hang off your pram handle, then attach those bags of shopping from them, use this method a lot myself.

    • +3

Just have to be careful with heavy things in the bag, otherwise the pram turns into a mini catapult once you let go of the handle! ;)

  • Outstanding finding OP! Cheers!

it's a huge scam that MM has conceived from the very beginning.

He thought that once he has the credibility of 499 deals, the 500th deal would be the perfect time to strike. 1000 suckers at 1c a pop. Split down the middle between MM and li pengzhen, GENIUS!

  • +47

I know it's in their product title but please take "climbing" out of yours. It should be fairly obvious to most people that this shouldn't be used for climbing and there are people out there who don't know any better.

    • +6

Maybe so, but not a valid reason to neg the deal unless you can show where you can get one of these for less than $0.01 delivered, a simple post would have been enough & im sure MM would have changed the title

Congrats MM & thank you for all the deals you take the time to post

      • +3

        Well said ABZ.

      • +7

See below. Neg is for GB implying that this is safe to use climbing when it is not.

I'd love it if everyone in this world had enough sense to learn how to participate in potentially dangerous sports safely but the reality is that not everyone will and people get hurt or killed. I see it as irresponsible of the seller to imply that equipment like this can be used for rock climbing.

        • -4

It is safe for use for climbing - for keeping your drink bottle from falling off.
Just not safe for supporting the weight of a person.

I'd also love that in this world all people have enough common sense to do proper research on proper equipment before risking their lives.

But then again they might be the perfect candidates for the Darwin Award.

        • -1

          @blahman:

This is not safe "for keeping your drink bottle from falling off" when climbing. Seriously, when was the last time you climbed with a water bottle clipped to your harness? For a climb long enough that you'd need water before you get down it would be roped up separately with the rest of your extra gear.

The only piece of gear I could see this safely being used for would be a chalk bag…but then you wouldn't need a locking biner.

What if that Darwin Award candidate was your nephew?!?!

      • -4

It's only a deal when you actually end up receiving the deal you paid for.

        • +7

Indeed, I think a lot of users here generally upvote too hastily.

        • Are you saying only people who buy the deal should vote?

        • +6

          @Scrooge McDuck:
There is nothing wrong with up-voting the deal purely as recognition of MM's milestone post. The fact it costs $0.01 for a product that may/may not have a thousand uses should be secondary in this instance. Just my thought.

          @Trishool:
You've given absolutely no reason why you've neg'd the deal.

        • +3

          @tightarse:

I replied to Trishool's comment because it resonated with me as an issue which is applicable generally to this site.

I wasn't referring specifically to this deal.

        • +4

          @eug:

"Are you saying only people who buy the deal should vote?"

T'ool would seem to be going beyond that; she is apparently suggesting that peeps should only up-vote a deal after it has actually been received

The thing is though, for mail-ordered deals, by then the deal would almost certainly have expired rendering the whole up-vote thing redundant, which seems not to have occurred to her.

        • @tightarse: Im sorry I didnt know I had to add in a reason each time I neg'd. Anyway if you must know it is based on past experience. Also I dont upvote deals based on a persons efforts for posting the deal, as it demolishes the whole vote results and the meaning behind them. I upvote if it is an actual deal based on the availability, total price (inc delivery and taxes), and seller experience/reputation (or other commenters feedback).

        • +1

@eug: No, I am saying vote to your hearts content. But the deal posted is only an actual deal if you receive the item you paid for (ie you only really gained something if you actually receive it for the discounted price you paid, if you dont receive it, youre at a loss and therefore cannot be considered a deal). In a recent experience, I didnt receive my item. Hence the reason why I have neg'd this deal - poor seller, poor customer service. I dont care if the item is 1c or $1000.

        • @GnarlyKnuckles: No I am not suggesting to upvote a deal after it has been received. See my response to @eug below.

    • What a great way to enrich the gene pool….

    • +1

      @Roscoe99:

It's now fixed, so will you revoke your neg?

      • Neg is for the seller stating that this can be used for climbing.

        Nothing has changed.

  • +38

I really don't think these are for climbing and should be removed from this site, or it should be made very clear that they are not to be used in any way like that.

If I'm wrong and they are rated to be used for climbing (Australian standards) then I apologise, but I don't think that would be the case.

    • +1

You're not wrong, these aren't safe to use for clipping gear to your harness let alone attaching a person you to a rope.

      • +13

What about for your mother in law to use ?

        • -2

That was gold but so true jv!

        • -1

Far better things for the mum-in-law jv.

    • +1

I know a few people who's rope I'd be happy for this clip to hold .

      • -1

Munter hitch off this when you're belaying them!

        • -1

          English… Do you speak it?

    • +5

I'll take one for the team and test it out

    • +2

You're right this could take the lives of people just because they thought they were getting a 'bargain'. Might need to take that out of the description.

I won't neg the deal though, Congrats on your 500th post.

      • +1

thought they were getting a 'bargain'

        'Bargain' of a lifetime ;)

        • +1

          Hahaha! ….I shouldn't be laughing

    • Hi spludgey. Thanks for your comment. I have not used this but both the reviews says

      • great, i have it a bout to one year ago and it´s still great, it save´s my stuff a lot of times in camping nights and bicycle adventures y really recomended this!
      • Small enough to be always with you, but comfortable to use. Great resistance. Good bargain, prompt dispatch
      • +5

Unfortunately this doesn't mean it is ok to climb with, you took climbing out of the title, which is great, but it is still in the picture (out of your control). Using this when climbing would put you at a serious risk of death, I won't downvote, but it needs to be kept in mind.

      • +7

You do realise that there is a 99% chance that a Gearbest employee wrote up those two reviews, without even laying their hands on it…

        • 1% margin of error?

    • +1

If someone knows how to use ropes buys a 1c carabiner and expects it to take their weight, they're going to kill themselves sooner or later anyway!

      • Price doesn't necessarily correspond to quality, especially when an item is discounted like this is.

        • Would anyone with a sound mind ever trust their life with a 1c carabiner from China?

        • +3

          @eug:

Firstly, China makes every grade of quality from crap to excellent.

Secondly, any grade of carabiner could be discounted to 1 c as a promotion.

What I'm getting at is that consumers should assess the specifications of a product rather than just its price to determine quality. Otherwise they will miss out on any bargain or on the flip side; they risk getting ripped-off by assuming that a product is of high quality just because it's expensive.

Having said that, I don't disagree with you on this case.

      • Finally some sense. Climbing carabineers have a force rating that is clearly etched or engraved into the side, usually 23+ KN for a closed carabineer and 8+ KN for open. Although these start at almost 1000x more expensive than the one in this deal they are not expensive.

        Congrats Month on the milestone

    • It can be used in climbing, it's very clear from the product description that it's not intended to be used to hook yourself to a line but to be used for other means. From the first line of the description: "It is auxiliary equipment for hanging kettle to the package, trekking pole, and ice ax, etc." and the rest of the description follows on from that.

      • +5

No, it can't be used for climbing.

You could use this to clip your ice axe (or other gear) to a pack when trekking in our out but not for climbing. Useless extra weight as you'd still need to carry a rated carabiner to climb with.

    • +6

Anyone that thinks that a $0.01 product is safe for climbing probably deserves to fall off a cliff anyway.

It's not for climbing. It costs 1 fecking cent, delivered! Get over it! Bought! Best present I've received from Chairman Mao thus far!

  • +1

Ahh, I thought this was a deal for a bicycle lock!

    This is a D-lock

  • +8

Hmmm i still haven't received my sim card adapter from the last 1 cent deal…

  • +3

I would like to see the words "Mountain Climbing" taken out of description. I don't want it to featured in "1000 dumb ways to die".

  • +1

Have only just noticed that GB are using a pic of someone rock climbing to advertise this product on their site.

    No way!

  • +1

Block-quote For outdoor excursions and outdoor adventure, especially climbing

For a 1 cent Carabiner? lol would not put any sort of weight on this thing/10

  • +3

Ordered one. Gonna climb Mt Everest now thanks Gearbest.

  • +1

Thanks great deal. Picked one up. Converted from US$0.01c to A$0.02c. Oh well guess that's my 2c for the night ;)

  • +1

Thanks Monty for all your posts. You are amazing.

  • +1

The Full Monty. Good on you for your efforts.

  • +1

Congrats MM on your 500th post!

  • Is there anyone dumb enough to use a $0.01 clip for climbing?

  • At such a low price, you would right to question how much quality control has gone into the product… And seeing that it's most likely mass manufactured, the testing would most likely not be to each individual one.

    Be responsible

  • +2

I just ordered 2, the code wouldn't work without logging in and I couldn't be assed making an account, so I guess they got a sale?

but I just ordered because I remember seeing this! (and I don't own a car)

Congrats MM on your 500th post- looking forward to 500 more : )

  • Grats Monty good work!

  • Well just lodged my order OK with paypal confirmation received just five minutes ago.

  • Using this for climbing would be a case of natural selection.. I really don't think we need downvotes over the issue

  • Marked expired but came late to the party and checked out without issue..
    Cheers MM
