Targus Citygear Backpack 15.6 Inch Was $42 at Staples $30 - $32 with Discounts

70

Thanks to BTB for this post: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/166401 and tio for the Aquire post https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/166513 .
So I checked Staples' clearance site and found this bag which normally costs from $78 to $95. I've read reviews somewhere that the bag is quite good and can lasts a long time.
Now to the discounts: potentially this can go down to $30. I have tried the NRMA discount as well as the "TENOFF65" as per the post of BTB and price went down to $32.42. If you've just sign up, you can get another $10 off $65 spend (although I haven't checked if this will stack up with the other two codes).
And with the Aquire 20000 points, this is good bargain. Good times!

  • I have one already. Good backpack.

    • Sorry stupid question.. but does a 15.6" backpack mean 15.6" laptop capable bacpack? does it have special pockets/strapping down or padding for a 15" something laptop? I didn't know if 15.6" backpack referred to capacity, or designed for a laptop….

excuse the amateur question, the targus link itself lists all the stuff it holds but didnt specifically say it was a purpose built laptop backpack.. wanted to check.

never had one, thought an official asus one for my asus laptop would work but they cost just under $100 :S

Did this backpack have alot of room for adding in (if its for a 15.6" laptop) a4 exercise books etc, books? seems quite big in the pic.

      • +1

I lifted this comment from shopbot.com.au selling the same model but 15.4 inch bag, "Fits my 15.6 in. laptop very well. the pocket is snug and protects it well, though if you like to drop your backpack on the floor constantly you might want to buy a laptop sleeve as well. Has tons of pockets for basically everything you need." Hope this answers your questions.

        • thanks, good help :)

Don't have a sleeve though :( hopefully its at least padded somewhat on the bottom… otherwise might be time for me to finally get a sleeve :)

    • @hbg - urgent!

Are you able to measure your laptop compartment sleeve? Or anyone who has this 15.6" Bag?

The stated dimensions are on here:

      http://www.inkman.com.au/products/Targus-TCG650AU-15-6inches…

      Computer Compatibility Dimensions 38.7 x 4.3 x 30cm

However I noticed my laptop dimensions as:

      http://www.asusnotebooks.com.au/notebook/asus-n53sv-sx581v-i…

      391 W x 266 D x 30.5 - 40.5 H mm

Therefore I'm fine on all dimensions but the length (or width, although I would call it length moreso technically) im about 391…. would 39.1 not fit in the sleeve at all given its stated 38.7"? Is the sleeve stretchy?

Given the max width is 30cm, and my laptop comes up at around 26.6cm it appears, surely this extra space will allow the compartment to open up more and the height to fit?

Just wondering if someone could check the compartment if 38.7cm is just the actual compartment and therefore if im over by one or two cms even if the backpack closes some way above the compartment then there should be an issue squeezing?

Likewise I assume the velcro strap that goes over the top to secure the compartment is loose enough to stretch over an extra <1 cm that my laptop falls out of these specifications?

If anyone with the bag could comment on how 'stretchable' this dimensions of the bag is that would be really great. WAS just about to hit the buy button to add it to my basket when I thought I better check dimensions… got misled thinking it was a 15.6" bag and my laptop is 15.6", so surely it would fit.

  • Anyone with a spare NRMA code? I'm with RacV =(

    • I've got RAC insurance too.. would appreciate if someone could spare me an NRMA code too please.

I don't think this deal otherwise will help me, if just buying the backpack one would be under the $65 threshold for $10 off, so you really need NRMA to get the 15% off plus free delivery…. otherwise this packback looks pretty good/cheap!

  • +1

Note that the $10 off code listed above is slightly wrong - it should be TEN65OFF

    • Ooops, my brain is messed up. Thanks.

  • Hi Majestic (OP) - so it seems unless you have NRMA you can only get the $10 off by signing up and spenidng over $65 yeah? SO putting that aside if they email out unique codes are NRMA memebers not interested in this be able to sign up and lend a helping hand with codes to get the 15% off and free delivery?

Would be great if so. Would be much appreciated.

I for one wouldn't mind the 15% off and free delivery if someone could spare a code. Brings this down from $42 to $35.70 which is worth a punt buying it.

If anyones willing to help if you could PM me a code that'd be much appreciated. Cheers

  • NRMA membership no. 8502450. Have fun, children. And If they cancel our orders, we'll just cry together. :)

    • I thought it was a code sent to your email using your NRMA membership to signup? Not your acutal NRMA membership no ?

      • Yeah… it's a code we need, which you need to use your NRMA membership no quoted above to register, for them to email it to you?? Tried using your NRMA membership # to pick it up, with no success obviously. :(

  • Oh, you have to use the deal posted by BTB https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/166401 and click on the link wherein they will ask you to put in your NRMA membership number together with your email address and they'll send you your codes. I tried it they send me the same code, so I wonder whether they just give a generic code. Anyways, the codes are NRMAXPYT15 and NRMAM4MFREEDEV.

    • Cheers I'll give it a go and see if it works.

      Did you pick one up?

    • BOUGHT! But the NRMA membership discount is misleading, they slapped on delivery charges of $5.50 onto mine… will try emailing them to point out that NRMA clearly states 15% off AND free delivery.

Thought it was becuase I signed up for the newsletter (which activates the $65 offer for $10 off), but i signed up my second email and same thing (even without applying the newsletter activation).

      Total was:

$35.69 (for bag , incl gst, after 15% off - originalyl $41.99) + $5.50 shipping (GST exclusive) for a total of $41.19… seems like a good price regardless, but might be worth a follow up email as to why we don't get the free shipping even for orders below $65? Which seems to be the stated membership benefits for NRMA….

thanks Majestic! hope we're not crying together soon haha.

      • I'm an idiot… just saw the second code, obviously looks like it's for delivery.. lol. guess it has been a long day… thought it was just a second alternative code for the same thing. Never thought about it until placing my order. Feel like such an idiot now.

hopefully they still honour it as I sent them an email regarding the delivery fee… hopefully I can request for good faith they refund it as I left out the code! argh.

Otherwise lesson learn. $5.50- i'll live. but takes abit of the fun out of the bargain :( GUess I will see how good staples customer service is if they honour the refund… esp given its well before the 31/10 expirey anyway, and so it would have been free anyway (if I had entered the code!).

Hopefully no one else will make the same mistake now :)

  • Incase anyone is like me and wants to see the backpack functionality - i.e. for those like me who's never used one, this website seems to have the same model with pics of it unzipped, good way to see it:

    http://www.inkman.com.au/products/Targus-TCG650AU-15-6inches…

I've never used a laptop backpack before but tossing up getting this.. given i've got a 15.6".. atm I just bring a shoulder sling, one zipper laptop bag that essentailyl is tuff my mouse, charger on top. Going for work you have to take it out of the bag for scanning (no idea why) so it will be a major relief to finally not have to juggle cords and taking it in/out, as it'll have its own dedicated sleeve.

That aside, I saw my laptop (asus) selling its own bags, but laptop bags go for nearly $100, and the suave/good looking carry on /sling on asus bags around $75-85…. how do targus compare ? Seems like they've got many backpacks so it seems they specialise in storage accomodating a laptop/electronics???

Would love to hear feedback on how this laptop bag model itself and the brand targus are for quality/reliability. Want to get a backpack that also facilitates my usual backpacks job of paper, pads, books etc, but combining it with my laptop (atm I carry two bags for my work, backpack, and laptop bag over one shoulder).

Or is it more worthy/versatile geting those trolley laptop bags?? Can you get a laptop bag that converts from backpack to wheel trolley?? like luggage backpacks?

Last question, says nylon material - I assume this isn't water proof or at least water resistant in that sense. e.g. a spill, light droplets, water bottle leaking on outside bottle holder? OTherwise can you get a laptop sleeve that does water resistance to mask a laptop inside a backpack like this?

What do you other laptop owners use for your storage needs?
