If you missed out on buying the $60 dollar Aldi Cocoon Android box featured last few weeks, here is an alternative from BIC, for around the same price.

It's equipped with a fairly grunty Rockchip CPU/GPU paired with 2GB of RAM, plus a large array of other interfaces including RJ45 Ethernet (100mbps), SPDIF, 3 full size USB ports (2 of them are OTG enabled) and a full size SD reader. It also has a 2 megapixel front facing camera.

It seems to run a heavily customised version of Android 4.4, though it may be possible to just install Apex / Nova launcher to get rid of the custom interface.

CPU: RK3188 Quad core Cortex-A9 @1.6GHz
2GB RAM 8GB ROM
32GB SD card supported
2 mpx web camera
Wifi BGN
Bluetooth Ver3.0

1 x SD slot,support SD card max.32GB
3 x Full size USB
1 x DC in 5V/2A
1 x Ethernet (10/100)
1 x SPDIF

  • What do you use this for if you have smart TV? I guess box is better than stick?

    • +4

TV boxes generally have more ports, usually comes with it's own remote, plus Ethernet, with a TV stick USB ports are usually limited to one MicroUSB port — can still attach a USB hub to support more devices though. And with a bigger size means better heatsinking and heat dissipation.

If your TV runs Android already then it's probably slightly redundant to own an Android TV stick/box.

Looks interesting. Anyone know if Google Play is available? Custom ROM?

  • Can it be wall mounted

    • Just use strong Velcro and attach it to the back of a wall mounted television. That's what I do with my hard disk.

  • Could I just plug in a 1TB portable HDD and treat this as a media centre for my TV? Thanks in advance :o)

    • +1

Wouldn't see why not? Install Vlc or mxplayer and your sorted.

      • Thanks Kaboda. Would you know what is a good app so that I could transfer files wirelessly from my computer to the HDD connected to this box if they are all on the same wifi?

        • +1

You should purchase Plex, it is the easiest way to stream media from a computer to any client device that can run Plex.

If you want to transfer files wirelessly, there's always ES File Explorer.

        • Thanks scrimshaw. Think I'll pulling the trigger here :o)

          @scrimshaw:
You guys are all assuming though that the apps you mentioned (ES, Plex, VLC, etc) can be loaded onto the device … which would also assume that it has Google Play store. I haven't yet seen any evidence that it has Google Play.
I guess the other way around it is to find .apk files for the apps. Not sure how much this is a sure bet though.

I would say there's a fairly high chance it will have GAPPS installed — many chinese Android manufacturers nowadays usually include it —, in case it doesn't, it's fairly simple to just sideload an APK or use the Amazon App Store method.

        • Didn't think about that. Thanks again scrimshaw for the workarounds.

I have 2 ugoos android sticks and they are great fo video playback. My RK3188 based stick has xbmc installed, but i just use MX Player . Using a mouse is heaps better than up,down, sideways buttons on a remote control, imo

This unit looks to be great value with all its features. The biggest problem with these types of Android devices is usually iffy wi fi performance. The ethernet port is a nice feature.

We use our androids sticks so much, that i have hard wired the bedroom one and installed a cheap Eop unit in the loungeroom, and hooked that into a network switch to feed both my smart tv and android stick.

The sticks do not have ethernet ports, so i use an Android ethernet to usb connector on both. Both sticks are also connected to 5 port powered usb hubs, which would not be necessary with this unit that has 3 usb ports

I download heaps of movies and TV series and my missus has downloaded her Candy Crush etc etc : ) games onto the sticks. We wouldn't be without them. Do yourself a favour, imo

      • Thanks for the feedback mrfluffy

  • can you run XBMC properly on this

  • Keep in mind that the rk3188 is an aging chip that is now superseded by the rk3288.

RK3288 ones will come at double the price, but if you intend to prepare for 4K and want to have a speedier box, then the Measy B4S is a better option at $100 which comes with HDMI 2.0 port - somewhat futureproofing on the multimedia side.

    Just something to consider.

Our bedroom android stick is an old ug802and i don't notice any real world performance difference to our rk3188.

I doubt anyone who buys this unit will be in any hurry to replace it, or find it lacking in video performance.
For $60 you can't go wrong, imo.

  • This would make a good PC :) Just stick it on the back of a monitor.

  • Not aware of all limitations, but I will jump in on this box if it can:
    - Play racing or FPS games
    - Skype/Tango
    - compare against Chromecast
    - Run in hotels with additional login setup (because it has Ethernet too)

    • +1

I really cant see why it couldnt, the CPU is a beast….
You cant compare it to the Chromecast, this is a PC the Chromecast is just a mirror image of your PC screen.

You couldn't pay me to put U2 in my living room. Bad enough Bono already forced his was onto my iPhone.

Have just purchased one of these. At $AU57 is a low risk purchase. My first venture into Android TV devices.
The SPDIF was one of the things that appealed. I don't have an AVR that can accept audio via HDMI, so I am hoping that this Android box can pass DTS/AC3 through SPDIF.
I will report back on my ability to get Google Play working on it.

Well I ended up cancelling the order for this item, because after further research I realised that it didn't have an OTG port. This lacking feature means 'hackability' is significantly reduced.e.g. you can't use the Rockchip flasher tool to backup and flash ROMs to/from the unit ( http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?10129-Backing-up-your… ). The lack of OTG also means less recoverability options if you brick the unit.
I would instead recommend this item:

Yes it costs $10 more, has 1 less USB host port (ie 2 instead of 3), and doesn't have built in camera (although can connect one to USB port) .. but it has an OTG port, it has Google Play, and XBMC too! May not even need to hack it..

  • Can this tv box able to watch any HK or China channels? or i need to stick with tvpad?

  • Is the power pack likely to be considered 'dangerous' ? Does it come with AU plug ?

    • Most times these things usually come with some other country's AC adaptor, but with an AU pin converter.

  • Will this be able to install xbmc?

  • very tempting.. hmmm

  • Why the fvck does this have a camera? Is anyone else sick of everything thats connected to the internet having a camera… fvk….

    • Put black tape over it?

  • Can you install the Netflix app on it?

  • Guys,
