Do You Ever Shower with Dish Washing Liquid Instead of Soap ?

I've been using Morning fresh over the last week instead of soap, I stumbled upon this 1 simple trick after the bar-soap ran out one morning. It get on your hands anyway while washing dishes so I thought what's wrong with some skin contact? Incredible value for money as well, $3 for a jumbo bottle and it lasts for ages, will probably last 3-4 months. Nice slight lemony scent afterwards, but just make sure you don't get it in your eyes. Good tip for those wanting to save money to fund their OzBargain habit.

When I was young, we used laundry bar (the one you can break into 4 equal parts) as soap AND shampoo. That's when times were really tough.

    • my uncle overseas uses laundry powder as shampoo/body wash but its tough times down there

      • +52

        Down there or "down there"?

        • He obviously means the Antarctica! "Down there" from Australia.

I use a soap free cleanser. Juliet zero shower gel I think, bought from Aldi. Nice big bottle and was fairly cheap.

No soap = no soap scum to clean from the shower.

    • +5

Soap free is the way to go. Take a look at getting silicone-free shampoo as well, as most commercial stuff essentially just encourages more oil growth. I'd recommend Moogoo brand stuff for anyone looking to shy away from less industrial strength cleansers.

      • +3

Kids use Moogoo, expensive stuff. What are you doing on OZB? lol

I rinse my mouth with bleach.

    • +16

      Bleach, that's for sissies!
I use Hydrofluoric Acid… It literally kills everything!

        • +1

@tommy-darko: ;-p not sure if by this you mean urine. Have heard it is sterile so would probably be fine.

Now that I think about it Hindus splash cow piss over themselves and even drink it. Being 'holy' and all. SMH.

And Urine Therapy is a thing too.

        • And there I was thinking I was only supposed to use uric acid to kill my athletes foot bacteria.

        • @diddy50: lol

        • @adamren: lol urine is sterile until it hits the urethra.

        • @Heizenberg: Fraud. Skyler get off OzBargain.

3% hydrogen peroxide and water at 1:6 ratio if you have a sore tooth.

    • +2

Just your mouth? You're doing it wrong!

  • +56

no sure if this is a joke post of for real but

its prolly not good for ur skin, which is why people wear gloves when washing dishes!

the dish washing liquid is quite strong against oils etc (which is great on dishes) and it you use too much on ur skin, it removes too much oils from ur skin, you would have to counteract this by using body lotion but that removes the cost benefit!

    • +22

This…. and it will probably help give you dermatitis….

    • It's seems to be working and maybe I've tougher than average/non-sensitive skins so not experiencing any rashes etc yet. Obviously I go easy on the facial area,it cleans motor oil off your body like no other.

      • +12

Do you wash your penis with it?

      • +13

Does your body excrete motor oils? Or do you swim in oils? Dish washing liquid is more concentrated and stronger than shampoo/body wash. The chemicals used are harsher, especially towards the skin, since its not designed to be used as shower wash regularly. While you may not feel much now, this stuff will probably slowly dry your skin out, hopefully you won't develop some sort of weird disease or skin problem in the future.

This is more like an anti-bargain. The initial savings is not worth it. Love and treat yourself a little better, YOLO!

        • +1

@taqi: I love how we're in an age where one must specify a "mechanical" vehicle in order to avoid ambiguity. The future is here!

      • +1

dishwashing liquid mixed with powdered laundry detergent works great for cleaning your hands after working on cars. I don't think it's great long term though. Your skin is supposed to have some oils on it, cleaning them all off all the time is not good for it.

    • +9

I think people also wear gloves because of the hot water.

    • This.

Detergent is used in DNA extraction because it breaks down cell membranes.

Which is why you should always rinse the suds off your dishes with clean water, too. You don't want that stuff in your gut.

  • +9

I've been using Sorbolene Cream with Vitamin e instead of soap for about 20 years. Much better for the skin.

    • +9

Yep, you can get the no-name one cheap at woolies.

Dishwashing liquid will destroy your skin. You'll end up with horrible rashes in summer.

    • +8

I've switched to Sorbolene for shaving as well, it works a treat! :)

      • Second person I know who uses Sorbolene for shaving and he's 80 and his chin is really wrinkle-free!

  • +20

There was this one time when I left a bottle of jif in the shower after cleaning. Had a visitor from overseas the next day, and he mistaken it for shower gel. Apparently he enjoyed the strong scent.

    • *mistook
Sorry, the Grammar Nazi inside me made me do it :)

    • Oh gosh I love Jif for cleaning the sink but my hands get so dry after i have to moisturise… poor dude would have been DRY.

  • +3

I don't use anything in the shower, shampoo or soap. I don't smell, plus I have very good skin…

    • +10

You must have a good balance of bacteria ;)

      • +2

Yakult maybe? Or is that a scam

        • Maybe he is Asian - scientific fact that they have less sweat glands which cause body odor.

        • +8

          @The Land of Smeg:
Sweat and sweat glands don't cause body odor, bacteria do.
I do a lot of sport over summer and shave my armpits, lots of sweat and not as smelly.
In the winter, don't shave and smell like a tip.

        • +6

Washing with Yakult would be expensive per mL

      • +10

        Or no sense of smell.

    • +26

Hope you arnt one of those people that have the worst BO, but clearly cant smell themselves?? Gotta be the worst thing about public transport

      • When do you have the right to say something?

If they work with you can you say - "dude, wear some anti perspiration deodorant or wash yourself"

We have a girl at work, she smells if any movement is involved, like that she forgot to put on deodorant that day, smell. It's kinda bad and we go out into the public as well.

      • ^ THIS

I'd rather inhale second hand smoke than BO which makes you gag

      • +8

clothing materials can also make a big difference how others experience your odor.

I can wear the same merino top cycling to/from work all week and don't smell. After a single ride with a polyester stop it stinks, therefore I stink.

      • +4

There is another side of the story. I suffer from bad BO, wash every morning before stepping out in public. I use non allergenic deodorants copiously, but they seem to wear off after an hour or so. I cant use normal deodorants as they badly iritate the skin, causing scabs, sores and broken skin that weeps pus. Even overuse of hypoallergenic deodorants can cause these symptoms.
So you see I am aware of whats going on but I gotta live my life too, sorry for your inconvenience

        • +4

What do you eat? I hear food is somewhat related

        • +2

Have you tried Dove womens deoderant? Everything else gave me rashes, but a bit of girly smell did the trick.

        • Lol SHOCKER, ahh memories of the 80s

        • +2

          @JLove:
          Caviar and Champagne of course

        • +1

get botox under your arms - heard this helps.

        • I dont have BO but do have FO. So i apply deodorantly solely on my foot. It works quite well.

        • Have you tried the medical grade anti-persperants? You may just need to take it up a notch. They have a small range of these available in most supermarkets, though they are a bit pricier; may be worth it though if it works!

        • If it's because of excessive perspiration, maybe consider a sympathotomy? My friend went for it. Just a simple cut of the nerve controlling sweat - can help reduce sweating of the palms, armpits or face.

        • Are coconut oil, bi carb soda and cornflour hypo-allergenic? http://wellnessmama.com/1523/natural-deodorant/ I made the 1st recipe after getting fed up with the feeling of not being able to wash off the only brand that seemed to keep me from smelling 90% of the time. So far it's worked 99% of the time, including when I'm dripping sweat from the treadmill

    • +2

Same here, except I just use soap on my armpits now. In winter it didn't matter, but now with the warmer weather I've started to smell myself. I always use deodorant, but water only isn't enough to kill the smell from the previous day's deodorant and sweat.

Took about half a year for me to get used to no shampoo and conditioner. At first it was greasy as hell. Now you wouldn't know. I've asked my family and they said you wouldn't know I don't use anything. I don't use any gel or anything; in that case I'd probably need to use shampoo.

BTW, I used to wash my hair every morning with shampoo and conditioner. By the evening, it was like an oil slick. Not using anything is the best thing I've ever done. Plus showers are much simpler, and I don't have to pack as much when I travel.

      • +2

This! My friend told me he rarely uses shampoo these days and his hair looks perfectly normal. Whereas I used to shampoo it everyday and have heaps of oil at the end of the day.

Been doing it for about 3 weeks now and still getting used to it, but so far so good!

    • +1

Not trying to sound crude but don't your genitals reek? I know mine would lol.

      • +6

Cleaning one penis is of upmost importance. Because it's a "just in case you get lucky tonight"

      • Actually, it smells less.

      • +3

Following a case study looking at 4 people who stopped using soap, shampoo, conditioner etc —>

The groin smell reduction was unexpected and remarkable, and the entire nether region is clearly healthier, less moist, and less cheesy than ever before.

Genital areas should only be cleaned with water, using of soaps or body washes might disturb the pH balance.

    • +2

or you got used to your own smell, but I bet others haven't LOL!

    • look, this noob showers

  • I knew a butcher who showered with dishwashing liquid because the young ladies did not like the smell of meat on him.

    • +3

So the ladies didn't like to smell his meat? He doing it all wrong.

  • +12

Probably the worst bargain tip. Would not recommend unless you're a greasy bear

    • It works really well at dirt removing, leaves the skin a bit dry though.

  • +2

I used to use palmolive dish washing liquid for a bubble bath when I was young. Great bubbles, cheap and gets you clean. You have to watch it when you get out of the bath because it becomes very slippery.

I would not suggest using dish washing liquid on your head as it will strip all the good oils and good bacteria from your hair and scalp.

    • +1

I thought they already get stripped as most people shampoo daily. I noticed that anyway, that my head got more oily the more I rinsed it.

      • +3

        Most people shampoo daily?
        Really?
        Twice a week for me.

        • +2

Every second day or previous night and the following morning after.

No need to shower daily u less you smell or are dirty.

        • +4

Shampoo is better! I go on first and clean the hair! Conditioner is better! I leave the hair silky and smooth!

        • @diddy50:

No need to shower daily u less you smell or are dirty.

          Seriously? To the shower… NOW.

        • @diddy50:

Going to forget I ever read that.

          Especially during the summer

Using a soap bar will save you lots more. Lots cheaper per bath than even Morning Fresh.

I buy 8 packs of soap from aldi last very long time. Per person it is very cheap

  • +3

I scrub with Ajax powder. Works a treat after a hard days work.

  • +4

Why shower when you can bucket and sponge.

  • +1

Why would you punish yourself to save a couple bucks. I think this is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard to save such a pittance. You should be embarrassed posting this. We live in a first world country and do not have resort to this.

  • +7

    Obvious troll is obvious.

  • +3

troll post is obvious, shower is different to washing hands with dish washer liquid, who the hell showers with dish washer liquid, that's like pouring juice in your tea instead of milk, their both the same price so why would you not use proper shampoo to shower with instead of dish washer liquid, and yes there are alot of cheap shampoo brands, you can even bulk buy 20ltr shampoo so don't tell me dish washing liquid is cheaper..

    • +2

The dish washing liquid lasts much longer. One small squirt lathers up so much and you only need a few and your done. From now on I'll probably only use shampoo and liquid soap when I wanna splash out a little for special occasions.
