Do You Ever Shower with Dish Washing Liquid Instead of Soap ?

I've been using Morning fresh over the last week instead of soap, I stumbled upon this 1 simple trick after the bar-soap ran out one morning. It get on your hands anyway while washing dishes so I thought what's wrong with some skin contact? Incredible value for money as well, $3 for a jumbo bottle and it lasts for ages, will probably last 3-4 months. Nice slight lemony scent afterwards, but just make sure you don't get it in your eyes. Good tip for those wanting to save money to fund their OzBargain habit.

I know someone who's skin has become so sensitive to dishwashing liquid she has to wear gloves all the time

    • yep that happened to a family friends wife couple of years ago where dishwashers were considered an item of luxury back then, these days I don't know anyone who doesn't have a dishwasher, they use less water and you dont have to do the washing, win win

      • I really want one but can't justify it; being a single guy :-( so I went the penny-wise, pound foolish route: bought a family-sized refrigerator, and instead of washing dishes, just store them in the empty cold space ready to re-used…until the big wash-up at the end of the week.

        • +2

you store dirty dishes in a fridge, and then wash when it becomes too dirty..?

      • +4

Family has dishwasher (came with the house) but refuses to use it as mum says it wastes water. We hand wash :-(

        • +2

Tell her that handwashing is unlikely to be more efficient than dishwashing.

Personally I'm prepared to pay for a dishwasher as I do the dishes, but our kitchen layout is such that it's not feasible to install one :(

        • +1

@TRS-80: The myth of dishwashers being more efficient than handwashing is a cognitive distortion cooked up to justify laziness & often backed up by pretty specious (read: biased & inconclusive) supposed 'green' studies.

        • +2

@StewBalls: You're probably right about the efficiency. I doubt if a dishwasher could be more efficient than my method but one probably prevents a lot of domestic altercations and violence. :)

        • @greenpossum: LOL, I might have to rethink my position on dishwashers…the missus could use one to cook the man some f..king eggs. ;)

There's a dermatologist, somewhere out there, with a big smile on his/her face at the moment.

  • +1

I hope you are not serious!!!

  • +4

2mins of my life I'm not getting back.

  • +21

I wash my dishes with shower gel. All my food tastes like shit but the dishes smell of Jasmine and Coconut.

    • +2

Lol thats a great tip for OP he likes the smell of things

  • +12

It goes great with Steel wool. Those 'exfoliating' scrubs are a scam.

  • Master of OzB, I have finally found you. Will you please shine more lights upon us poor souls?

    • +6

I'm not sure I wanna divulge too many secrets. Heck soap manufacturers already hate me.

      • +4

manufacturers of dishwashing liquid and manufacturers of bath shampoo are owned by the same soap mob.

  • +1

What's next? You gonna pluck your whole body so you don't have to shave?

  • +13

Oh god, this topic is fantastic.

OP, do you plan on trying other brands? Morning Fresh is a name brand so perhaps you could further save money by picking up Homebrand dishwashing liquid 1L for .99c

You might suffer irreversible skin damage, but think of the savings.

  • +3

OP try using diesel in your petrol car, it burn slower and smells better.

  • +9

This can be a bargain if you wash your dishes at the same time

  • Hell I just take a bath at my gym cost free

    • +7

Don't other patrons get annoyed by the clinking of your dishes?

      • +2

he does it at dinner time, and brings extra…

    • @Antzz I rather not, only people who take showers in my gym are old saggy ass people with their d!ck hanging out from when they enter the bathroom to where the showers are, so even if you go in there to visit the mens room you will catch a glimpse of some old guys naked body, so i try not to go in there unless i really have to lol

    • +22

I live in an estate where we have a body corporate and there's a gym as common property. I've seen a few people coming to the gym just to take a shower to save on their water bill but I'm okay with that. One day, the security guard saw some lady washing her dirty dishes in the gym shower. When he told her that she couldn't do that, she's mad as hell because she reckoned it's her right as a paying member. I just shook my head in disbelief when she returned to the gym the next day, carrying two buckets of more dirty dishes. True story!

      • +6

wow she takes the meaning of tight ass to new hights!

      • +4

        She must be an Ozbargainer.

        • +5

Nope. She'd be a tightass scumbag. Just because taking a dump on the pavement outside your house would save you water for a single flush, doesn't mean you have to do it.

  • +12

Even though this post is certainly a joke, I've got to say the shower is a ridiculous area of your life to skimp on. I bought a bottle of this vanilla-scented goat's milk shower soap which was $8 for a 400mL bottle. Using it with a loofah it has lasted me months of daily showers (and there's still plenty to go). Basically it costs $10 more a year to use this "luxury" item than it does to scour my skin with dish-washing liquid. Plus, instead of coming out of the shower smelling like a dinner plate, I emerge with the aroma of a freshly-baked vanilla cupcake.

  • +9

OP, don't forget to take your dishes into the shower too to save even more.

    • +2

communal showering, fun for all the family, even more savings to be had. Oh wait (u do that too?)

      • +2

I just shower with my twin pornstars

    • +3
      • +3

You beat me to it lol! +1

  • Water …

  • +1

If you're going that far already, why stop at morning fresh? Surely a homebrand product would be cheaper.

  • +10

In the shower I use a water activated gel cleanser, then a honey almond body scrub, and on the face an exfoliating gel scrub. Then I apply an herb-mint facial mask which I leave on for 10 minutes while I prepare the rest of my routine. I always use an after shave lotion with little or no alcohol, because alcohol dries your face out and makes you look older. Then moisturizer, then an anti-aging eye balm followed by a final moisturizing protective lotion.

    • +4

      Lol, you psycho! ;)

      • +4

I shower in the blood of young girls, it helps to keep my skin nice and smooth

Now that's psycho. Alfred Hitchcock psycho.

        • +3

Legend has it that serial-killing Countess Elizabeth Bathory actually bathed in the blood of virgins in order to preserve her youthful appearance! ;)

    • +3

They sure do things differently there in the west coast. In the east coast, we shower in the shower

    • +3

ya know, they did an experiment that showed sunscreen is most effective at keeping you looking young (because your skin isn't getting sun damaged). The rest of it is all just crap.

      • +2

Too much is bad, especially in the winter months. Lack of vitamin D has much greater health effects than some low level natural sin exposure.

        • +1

New evidence suggests that sunscreens do not inhibit Vitamin D synthesis, just FYI.

        • +1

Sauce? On cancer council Au website it notes they significantly reduce vitamin D production, albeit you only need a few minutes if you have lighter type 1 or 2 skin. I was vita D defficient because I using sunscreen in the winter and my skin is type 2-3, and naturally production is reccomended over taking a tablet unless your physical state prevents you from going outside.

        • +3

          @Davo93:

          Sauce?

          Yeah, tomato thanks…

Here you go, since your google is clearly busted: http://www.smh.com.au/lifestyle/beauty/does-sunscreen-block-…

        • +1

I'm a simple pleb and do not have the capacity to mind read you and extract the exact study you were referring to. Rather you linked a smh article which reffered to a study which was sponsored by a sunscreen manufacturer.

        • +1

@Davo93: Yeah, sorry man it was the second google result from a search with the elusive words sunscreen & vitamin D, I can appreciate how that might be pretty tough to track down without your Jedi powers…

Again, just FYI, big industry sponsors a vast amount of research in many fields, it doesn't mean the science behind it is either flawed or any less promising.

        • +1

          @Davo93:

          http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/7726582

This work was supported by grants from the Victorian Health Promotion Foundation; The Skin and Psoriasis Foundation, Victoria; The Skin and Cancer Foundation, Sydney; The Australasian College of Dermatologists; The Sydney Melanoma Foundation; and the Lloyd Williams Trust, Maryborough.

TL;DR Using SPF-17 (no idea why) there is a significant effect 1,25-OH D3 levels (the active form) but overall vitamin D levels remained within reference ranges. Essentially we have nothing to fear as long as you're wearing the right clothing to get the right amount of vitamin D in the first place (short sleeved shirt and nothing covering the face AFAIK.)

        • @StewBalls: UV is required to make Vitamin D. Sunscreen blocks…umm UV.

        • @adamren: Sunscreen doesn't necessarily block 100% of…umm UV.

Seriously, that's the best you could come up with two days after jzdhgkd posted the above link??? Thanks for playing…

  • You'll be clean enough to eat off.

  • Hahahaha..

    …No

  • +13

You're only 21 kid, you've got your whole life ahead of you. There's no need to go messing around with chemicals for your body at such an early stage of your life, there's no telling what effects this may have on your health in later ages.

Saving what, a hundred or two per year by using dish washing liquid instead of soap isn't worth the cost of health, you can earn money one way or another but you can't earn health.

If you really need to save, cut down on luxury items like desserts, cold drinks etc, don't mess with your health.

Best case scenario you spent a couple extra dozen per month for the real thing and had a healthy life, worst case, you saved a few dozen and got skin problems for the later stages of life, the cost of treatment alone would render it wrong, not to mention the pain.

Soap is there for a reason, I cant imagine dish washing liquid killing the every day germs on your hands etc, you could pick up something deadly.

Quit screwing around and get the real thing, money isn't everything.

  • +4

While we're here let me make a suggestion, toothpaste lube. Leaves you minty fresh.

    • +10

Whoa, slow down a bit Satan. I'm not falling for that trick again.

      • Best used anally.

  • This has to be a troll post

  • +8

Hah, my conclusion from reading this thread, is that there is a difference between 'sheer stupidity' and 'bargain hunting'. Seriously, trying to save a buck or 2? Why not stop showering all together, you will save even more!!

  • if i did this my body would turn into some sort of crustacean that's been washed ashore and left to dry out.

  • In all seriousness, this works great, is cheap, good quality and lasts a long time:

  • +4

Rub deep heat and have a cold shower, saves from having to use the hot water.

    • +1

Don't forget to use a scourer for that extra burn.

  • Lol washing your private parts with Morning Fresh will guarentee you a Morning Glory.

  • +2

Morning fresh is for sissies when I shower I use home brand detergent.

    • ROFL . That comment made my day

  • +1

If you wanted to save money, you could use Baking Soda for shampoo also.

    • Gwasha. Bi-carb soda and vodka. Best thing ever. Amazing.

  • Save up now, will be useful for treatment of skin cancer :)

  • +3

If you want, PM me and if you live nearby, I will bring back some good quality hotel bath gel and shampoos and soaps for you from my next work trip.

  • all the time, its way cheaper

  • +1

Really harsh stuff on your skin, thats why people wear dishwashing gloves

  • +2

Pretty silly idea. Morning fresh is considered a hazardous substance, check the msds. It has exposure limits etc. Just did a risk assessment on it the other day at work, can be between 1-10% ethanol so it would really dry you out with repetitive use. Google the MSDS.

  • +3

Find a good quality bar of soap (grated or in chunks),, add around 9+ cups of water and heat til dissolved add 1-2tableapoons of glycerin, leave overnight & blend and you will have a couple of months worth of body wash for a few dollars AND you can keep your dish washing liquid for your dishes and quite possibly smell a bit nicer! Win win!

  • +1

Chemist warehouse has this non-soap legit shower gel called enzo or enya or something like that. I think from memory its $3 or $4 for 1L.

    • +3

Well which is it? A Ferrari or a Celtic singer?

  • Do you ever shower with dishwashing liquid?

can't say I have. Although I did try going no poo for a while ( 2 weeks) but felt so self-conscious about it. Kept wondering if I smelled like vinegar or worse sweat, dirt AND vinegar.

Edit: 'No poo', as in no shampoo. I did use a little of baking soda and vinegar.

  • I use Dettol hand sanitiser for my face occasionally. It has Triclosan, which seems to be helping with some of skin problems I have.

    • +3

Yikes. They've banned that stuff in other places.

Colgate Total has triclosan and Bloomberg did a story about how it's carcinogenic or something.

      Try bi-carb and vodka.

There is also hydrogen peroxide 5%.

Consider washing sheets and pillow cases more often, like weekly in hot water and eucalyptus oil. Perhaps try new towel with each shower until it clears up.

  • +2

i use cat food on toast , its half the cost of tuna and it's really nice!

  • +2

I buy the loose DOVE soap bars sold for $1 at discount stores/chemists, last me for a week and there's no need to use cream afterwards as it is 1/4 moisterising cream.

  • +2

I use Amor all wash and wax…… has way more suds….then I hose myself using a Karcher hose. Leaves a nice fleshy feel afterwards.

  • I've done the other way around, that is I've used shower gel to wash dishes when the dish soap ran out!

  • Humans have bathed for thousands of years in rivers and lakes, and we have much cleaner water nowadays. We don't need soap, it's all soap commercials. There are so many soap commercials that tv shows are called soap operas.

  • FYI detergent breaks down cell membranes, which is why it is used in DNA extraction (google it).

Its not the benign chemical most Aussie households believe it to be. Which is why you should always rinse the suds off your dishes with clean water.

  • I have to admit this is the most enjoyable OzB post I've read along the years……

  • Haahaa you gotta love Ozbargain. Members like you are good value to ozb community.

    I tend to use
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/163885
$5 a litre but i don't do dishes with it. It may be too soft for you…
Aldi may have $3 a litre version which is cheaper that morningfresh.

  • I wash myself with a rag on a stick

  • +3

Yeah mate, I also use toilet duck as deodorant and easy off bam for toothpaste.

  • +1

Why not skip showering altogether? You'll save heaps more.

  • +1

Once I saw this guy brushing his teeth with laundry powder. I did not dare to try it.

  • +3

Hey mate, I saw some cheap deals on Morning Fresh @ Officeworks:

    http://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/morning-fresh…

Time to stock up for summer time, don't you think? The other retailers might be able to match or even beat the price if you wanna do some leg works.

    • Ahh you beat me this time :P

  • Why not just use lysol or some other industrial grade disinfectant? You can get pine scented ones too. :P

Disclaimer: The above was a tongue-in-cheek suggestion that SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT be followed as it may cause irreparable damage to your skin.

  • Instead of buying powerade and gatorade for when I go for a jog, I've just been using my toilet water and added a bit of food colouring and some sugar from free sugar packets I've been taking from coffee shops. Works a treat. Some people say it will make you sick, but I think I have a strong immune system as I haven't noticed anything yet.

  • +1

I use Finish Powerballs in the shower. I just slide one in between my cheeks and turn in a circle 473 times. My arse has never been clearer.
