Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone has experience in buying refurbished laptops from Dell's online Outlet store

How was the experience? Any issues with it?

Seems people think they are great going by Whirlpool forums. I have been looking, waiting fr something to pop up, Inspiron 5000.

The refurbs look brand new, either no marks or finger prints so they say. And being around half price or even less look to be a bargain.

    • I can see lot of Inspiron 15 on this page: http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

Is there something else that you are waiting for? there are so many models…it is hard to understand!!

      • +1

Waiting for a 5000 or 7000 15 inch model full hd touch screen.
There were a heap 2 or 3 weeks back but now they only have the 3000 model ( which is really cheap, some are around $250.

        What are you after?

        • i m thinking of latitude 3340…wat do u think of them? i have no experience with Dell laptops…have never bought them before.

        • +4

@avitherock: Latitudes are pretty tough. They're business grade, so they are aimed for frequent travellers, corporations, etc. Aside from being durable and easy to service, they're reasonably light and powerful. They are not games machines though.

        • @airzone: I am not looking for a gaming laptop…just something for a everyday use which will be reliable and portable.

        • +3

@avitherock: The Latitude is a good all-rounder laptop. Dell design them for business and enterprise users, which means they're designed with uncomplicated layouts for fast, inexpensive repairs. If you get them with the Pro Support option, Dell often have to send a tech out Next Business Day to repair any hardware faults, so they make them easy to work with.

I prefer Dell laptops over any other brand simply because when something does break, you can always get parts and service. I've seen some amazing laptops from other makes with incredible bells and whistles that are impossible to get parts for after only 12 months. HP come close - you can typically get HP parts and service fairly easily. Nobody else is in the ballpark.

        • -1

@WalterPPK: Latitudes are far more common for school kids/teachers than business. They aren't anything special but they can take a real pounding. Think of latitudes as the better entry level Dell laptop. I'm not a Dell marketer but this is how I see them:

                   Consumer | Business

          Entry Inspiron | Vostro
          Value4$ Latitude | XPS
Top End XPS Studio | Precision

Then off by itself is Alienware for gaming, although I should say the latest iteration of them look much more businesslike so that it would be easier for people to write them off as a business expense I'm guessing.

On a side note I see absolutely no reason to ever get a Vostro as the latitude's are cheaper and better quality in my opinion. By the way this is just my personal opinion.

        • +2

Actually the Latitude range is very business and enterprise. There are very large enterprises that use Latitude / Inspiron range. We are talking thousands of units. They aren't buying XPS at that number.

        • +1

          @voolish:

They havent sold Vostro for while now have they?

        • @voolish:

Nah… My old company had a fleet of about 45k dell machines - in my division alone.. Across all divisions, about 150k machines. All laptops were latitude, with a handful of precisions for mobile engineers. Machines were on a 4 year refresh.

We look for consistent hardware across a long life model (Latitudes models were exactly consistent for about 12 - 14 months in each family, then progressed to the next model with about 3 months overlap) to assist with image deployment and management. They are also tough (as I mentioned before), fast worldwide repair (although it annoyed me when someone came back from the UK with a UK style keyboard…), and fairly good performance. And when you're buying that many, they're dirt cheap.

My new company is much smaller… Only about 80 or 90 users. The current standard is toshiba portege's… The latitudes are much better… Depending on the figures, I will probably change the standard to dell latitudes, optiplexs, and precisions for the engineers. But we won't get nearly the same price.

I got the Inspiron 7240. Was $699 'refurbished' when the identical spec was $2300 on the Dell site. Looked Brand New to me with all the stickers, etc. intact. Bargain! The only problem is that they come with only 1 year warranty.

  • +1

Same as above. I bought a refurb Latitude 5440 for $499 which is basically brand new with only minor scratch on its charger. So far no issue.

There are many specs/model available right now but let's say for $500 you can get something like

    • inspiron 15 with core i7-4500u and dedicated graphic $529 (refurb)
    • latitude 5440 with core i5-4310u,business grade $549 (refurb)
    • can u plz tell me where you can see latitude 5440 for $549

I am looking at this site (Dell Australia) and it has it for $859 : http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/topics/segtopic.aspx/product…

      • Prices vary on specs. I.e screen size.

I've purchased a Latitude 5440 for $600 a couple of months ago and aside from the box it came in, it looks brand new. Description said it was a refurb but i couldnt even tell if it was used. Packaging was new, everything - It was awesome.

      • Look up for item # DFO-2924613LT

  • Hi, i have bought a few laptops from the outlet and have had no problems with it. i have bought an alienware and 2 insprions. Also bought a few pc's for friends. all of the computers i have purchased have not had any problems or scratches/marks. You just have to be patient and wait for a good laptop to be on the site, then quickly purchase it as they can sell out fast

    • I am not sure how to purchase them fast. I found a Latitude laptop which I thought was alright for the price. When I contacted the Online chat, they said they will get back to me in 24 to 48hrs as they have to check with their Inventory Team. It is hard to know when the laptop was listed.

      • when i purchased it was hit and miss, sometimes i would get the item, other times it was sold. the sold items would still display on the page for sometime. i found the best way was to call them directly. although i never tried the online chat.

Good choice. If you're after refurb Dells, I would recommend Lattitudes as they are generally very well made. Got a Lattitude E7440 refurb, been going strong for 5 months.

    • Hi Mate,

just wondering how it going with your laptop? Any issue at all?

I'm thinking of getting similar config as your and it cost $599 with better 1.9GHz and touch screen.

      cheers bud

I bought a top of the range inspiron 7737 refurbished from the us store for approximately 800 shipped via a freight forwarder. Dell has international warranty transfer so done that. Equal spec laptop was $2000 in dell australia store without in home warranty like the US ones come with. Was perfect in every way, minor blemish (microscopic) on the bottom panel but who looks there anyway.

  • I had a bad experience with a brand new dell so I wouldn't even think about their refurbished products.

    Just another opinion and experience…

    • +2

      It happens with any brand.

I've been using Dell for my company for about 10 years, and by and large, they're good (on the Latitude and Optiplex product lines). My personal Inspiron is pretty good too. That's about 250 - 300 machines.

That said, I've had some machines come from the factory with silly mistakes - the plastic shield on a GPU heatsink still being in place, the CPU fan not being plugged in, etc.

  • Whats the warranty like?

    • EDIT: DELETE

  • Do they ever have 5000 series , I only see 3000's

    • Yes they do.. I still have an excel with data extract from 5 sept 2014. I can see some of them with i5 4210u or i7 4510u+r7 m265 configs selling for $700+. You can setup external data in excel and paste in the url, refresh every morning and be patient :)

      • explain how you do this please.
sick of scrolling and looking every day

        • +7

you can go to the listing page (only works with Internet Explorer), then right click on the page > Export to Microsoft Excel. Save it and the next time you open it just hit Alt+F5 to refresh the data. I found it easier to read in Excel.
Or here is the full guide: Create and edit a Web query

        • @matabuntu:

          Great tip matabuntu. Thanks

        • @matabuntu:
          Awesome tip!
I think I just used Internet Explorer after 8 months!

        • +1

          @matabuntu:
thanks, quite simple when you know how. cheers.

I looked it up and used excel > data > web page which is exactly what your right click does.
          plus one for IE!

    • yes they do, had quite a few not to long ago and that is what I am waiting for 5000 with FullHD touch screen, they were $729
      or a 7000

  • What about refurbed non gaming desktops? Can you guys recommend anything with some future proofing?

It's a maze trying to work out what's good.

  • own a Latitude E6330 and traveled with laptop on Stanby and Hibernate overseas at least 15 times, never any issues. Called support before just to check on warranty status and find them very nice people and concern for your data and gave me some advice on how to back it up and all.

My next laptop will be a Dell!

  • I bought an XPS 13 ultrabook refurbished. Didn't notice anything wrong with its appearance, but did notice the cooling fan sounded like it was hitting something. Rang dell the next day and they came out replaced it. It's worked fine ever since.

  • if you don't need support, its good.

I have bought a latitude and inspiron desktop, no probs. But when I got dell venue pro 8, it didn't come with MS Office (missing the card with the license number). Have emailed and called dell support and they do not care

    • I thought the refurb Venues dont have Office only the new ones.

Received my laptop yesterday which I ordered on Monday. Would have received on Tuesday I guess if it was not a public holiday. Though packaging looks like someone has been through it, the laptop looks and feel brand new. I could not find any scratch or marks anywhere. Very happy that a laptop costing 1300 on dell websote , I got it for 489!!

    • Thanks for starting the post mate.
I am in the same boat here. I need to buy one for my niece in the next couple weeks, and sending it KL. Definitely will get one from Dell Outlet.

Can I add the RAM in the future? and is 4GB RAM is enough?

      Thanks,

      • i am not sure if RAM can be added later? Maybe one of the experts here can help with that.

Also, I just turned it on yesterday, it was very smooth while doing all the general tasks.

      • Can I add the RAM in the future? and is 4GB RAM is enough?

You need to check the specs for RAM config.
As an example, the Inspiron 15 (3542, Early 2014) has only one SODIMM slot & will support 2GB, 4GB, or 8GB. So to upgrade it, you'd have to replace the 4GB RAM with an 8GB stick.

Refer to Specifications manual from link:
        http://www.dell.com/support/home/au/en/audhs1/product-suppor…

4GB is enough for general use (eg. internet, watching videos, basic Office functions, etc)

  • Bought this morning for $699 Inspiron 15 5000 Series Laptop 4th Generation Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4510U processor (4M Cache, up to 3.1 GHz)8GB Dual Channel DDR3L 1600MHz (4GBx2) 1TB 5400 rpm Hybrid Drive AMD Radeon(TM) HD R7 M265 2GB DDR3.

Plenty more of 5000 series. There is one at the end of the list Inspiron 17 5000 Series for the same price.

    • I bought one as well, good price for the specs (the new models dont have the FHD screen any more)
hey, $700 is super cheap for any PC with a FHD screen.

And you have a 15 day return policy if you don't like it. and the normal 12 month warranty.

      • Any scratch or dents?

  • What's the 15 5000 $699 like? Ok for gaming? Backlit keyboard or not?
