Just a warning that Crucial m500 has possible compatibility issues with some Asus motherboards/laptops

    • Even with the latest MU05 firmware?.

I'm running the Crucial M500 240GB on a Gigabyte motherboard. No problems with Gigabyte. If you're running an ASUS motherboard make sure that the SSD has got the latest firmware.

      • Didn't work with my Asus Q501LA laptop. Also had problems with a much older AM3 Asus board (forget which model)..

Looks like that MU05 firmware has fixed it though… but still, I expect it means you need to use a non-Asus board to upgrade the firmware first.

Edit: Never mind, a bit more googling and I think MU05 still doesn't fix it. http://forum.crucial.com/t5/Crucial-SSDs/M500-and-Asus-Q501L…

i have got MBP2011, wondering, how hard would that be to install the operating system, and backing up all the existing files? making sure the OSX run in SSD ?

    • Cloning the existing hard drive directly?

    • standard practice is to do a clean installation. cloning isn't for the novice.

Installed Samsung EVO 840 last week into my son's MBP 2011.

Started with by creating a boot disk on 8 GB USB stick and back up files on an external drive
      Swapped stock drive with SSD.
      Boot from USB stick.
      Install fresh copy of Yosemite.
      Installed Trim enabler.
Re install all apps etc etc

Very simple. All in all less than an hour

    • If you didn't change the seller when you clicked the link, you weren't buying it from Amazon (at least after the price change, it defaulted to not-Amazon as the seller). Non-Amazon sellers have far higher shipping rates, and in this case they also had a higher item price.

Within the next 12 - 24 months, SSD's will cost the same per GB as spinning HDD's.

Leasing arrangements at work (600+ employees) are up, and we are all getting stock standard dell workstations with SSD's. I think that says it all.

  • missed it! but very good price… i guess a sign of things to come

damn i would have got one if I had seen it.

However, I have been monitoring SSDs on amazon for a while, and if they are true to form, when they drop a price they tend to repeat it again a few days later.

  • Available again if anyone is interested!
