Sydney Airport Lost Property Auction. Online this year!

Moved to Forum: Original Link

Sorry to get this in late. Mods please categorise/update as appropriate. Not quite sure how to classify this but suspect the community will be interested.

Saw a post about this on Facebook and wasn't able to get to posting it until now. Suspect this will be a HUGE OzBargain annual event.

A processing fee of 16.5 per cent (including GST) payable to Pickles will apply in addition to the hammer price on all lots.

The spiel is as follows:
Thousands of items will go under the hammer when Sydney Airport holds its annual charity lost property auction next month.

For the first time, this year’s auction will be held online over a 10-day period with the items organised into five categories:

Auction 1:
Cameras, iPods, docks, gaming consoles, games, various electricals (Starts 9am, Tuesday 4 November, ends Monday 10 November 8.30pm)

Auction 2:
Mobile phones, tablets, laptops, various technology (Starts 9am, Wednesday 5 November, ends 8.30pm
Tuesday 11 November)

Auction 3:
Jewellery, cosmetics, perfume, handbags, luggage (Starts 9am, Thursday 6 November, ends 8.30pm Wednesday 11 November)

Auction 4:
Alcohol and tobacco (Starts 9am, Friday 7 November, ends 8.30pm Thursday 13 November)

Auction 5:
Miscellaneous – souvenirs, toys, sporting goods, clothing, paintings, artwork and homewares (Starts 9am Saturday 8 November, ends 8.30pm Friday 14 November)

Pickles Auctions Australia will hold a viewing day on Wednesday, 5 November at its warehouse in Milperra where members of the public can inspect the items.

Bidding on each item will start at $1, with descriptions and photos to appear on the Pickles website.

“Close to 38 million passengers travelled through Sydney Airport last year from all over the world and the items left at the airport reflect this diversity,” Ms Fielke said.

Unusual items in this year’s auction will include a surfboard, a microwave, a blender, musical instruments including ukuleles and violins, a bike and a scooter, along with the usual smartphones, tablets, cameras, designer handbags, sunglasses and fragrances.

    I looked at the cameras and the fee's here are ridiculous;

    Internet Bidding Fee
Applicable to winning bids placed via Pickles Live

All lots in all other sales
All lots sold up to $999.99 - FEE $82.50
    All lots sold $1,000 & over - FEE $99.00

    • +1

That's for putting a bid on a live, in-person auction over the internet - cheaper than a phone bid, which is $99.

The fees for this auction are actually 16.5%

      • +3

Lol interesting why nobody complains about that.
People start pulling out their pitchforks when eBay made their fees 10%.

        • Because Ebay, doesn't really do any legwork.

They've just set up an online framework. You do the rest.

    Why such a big fee???

    • +2

because all this publicity ain't free you know!

    • Please correct me if. I am wrong. Anything to do with Macquarie gets a premium? Auction 10%, Airport likely makes a cut as well. Need to be CRAZZZZY to pay big dollars for second hand goods with no warranty plus potential remedies.

    • This isn't ebay.

This is a physical arena with real intermediaries doing real work, to set it up and distribute it.

  • cool

I always think it is awful that they profit from selling people's lost luggage. They should try a bit harder to find the owners!

    • +3

If only there were some standardised serial number for anything and everything

    • +5

They are not profiting — read the full story. The proceeds go to Charity.

It would be downright unethical to profit from people's lost luggage, it's definitely not something a company will do and publicize in the news. Would kill their reputation :(

      • +5

Yes, and Macquarie Bank have an awesome reputation for their benevolence and philanthropic work !

      • +3

You don't think Pickles is making a profit with a 16.5% processing fee?

        • +3

Do we know if the processing fees will also be part of the charity revenue or is the money used to pay off the fees for hosting the event?

Pickles is hosting the auction, whether it is an auction for charity or an auction for a car dealer, it doesn't change the fact that Pickles needs to pay staff wages, electricity and rent for their equipment…. these costs don't suddenly dissapear just because the auction is for a charity.

        • They've been around for a long time.

If they were making significant profits, everything would be somewhat more glamourous.

  • +5

A processing fee of 16.5 per cent (including GST) payable to Pickles will apply in addition to the hammer price on all lots.

    That's worse than eBay.

    • +1

      It will give them ideas.

    • Unlike eBay, they actually have costs and expenses to be paid.

      • Well it's included in the seller's price which you end up paying anyway.

  • +3

If I can prove that one of the DSLR is mine, can I claim it back?

    • I suppose so if you have the corresponding serial number.

    • +2

I don't think you can. I'm sure they have checked with their lawyers before selling it.

I remember reading from somewhere and hearing about it on the radio, that if you find a lost item, you get to keep it as long as you have "tried to find the owner (e.g. go to the police)" and it has been over 3 months and no claim has been made.

Somebody can probably quote some legislation somewhere which makes it more clear.

Interesting if they sell a iPhone and the person has actually reported it to their carrier for a imei block with AMTA. Looks like their T&C on the auction says they cannot guarentee that it works.

GoPro Hero 3 for starting bid of $230 + 16.5% fee
And you're not guaranteed to get everything you need….
May as well just go buy a new one.

    • +1

Bidding on each item will start at $1
      apparently not!

      • Actually, that item did start at $1, but now minimum bid increment is $10.

        • ah, so it wasn't the starting bid, it was the current bid, got you!
btw i've been to a few of these, you notice an annoying habit of some auctioneers, to "save time" what they will do is do a 'run' of similar items and not start every item at $1, makes it near impossible to get a bargain

  • Can we use Bidnapper?

  • +1

Camera prices are ass. Even before you factor in the bidding fee and that it's sight unseen and you have no buying protection.

  • +1

I seriously cannot believe that people are bidding on iphones that are most likely one of:

Items may be damaged, faulty, use overseas power supplies, have missing components or power cords, be IMEI/Carrier locked, have iCloud activation locked, be blocked, etc and are sold AS IS, WHERE IS

    • Its all fixable after time. Thanks internet

  • OK, let's make this post interesting - who can find the weirdest item for auction?
I'll start with a Dog Collar

  • +1

    Need some Back Supports?

  • We cannot guarantee the authenticity of the brand or stamping on any items and the description is a guide only.

Lets just bid on some gold jewellery that isn't gold!

  • I wonder if there's an "unopened boogie board" bag that has not been sniffed by a Customs doggy…[sarcastic smirk]

  • I also wonder what steps they have taken to ensure no data remains on any of the devices they sell.. With the possibility of phones being locked via iCloud I am thinking very little.

    • -1

I also wonder what steps they have taken to ensure no data remains on any of the devices they sell..

None. They really should be destroying these items rather than selling them. I wouldn't want my home-made movies/pics to fall into the wrong hands.
