Money Magazine Gives Props to OzBargain (oh, and a suggestion)

Was reading the latest issue of Money Magazine and OzBargain was mentioned having 8.1M visits in August. Top 5. Almost twice as many as COTD. How much money are you making Scotty and mods???!!! Just kidding.

With that so many visits, no wonder I miss out on most of the very good deals. How about a members only section/ privelege where logged in (or paying) members get first dibs on deals before they get posted. Of course the mods will determine which deals are worth holding back a few minutes from general public. Then posters who get a lot positive votes get some incentives (money or freebies).

So would anyone consider a paid members only priv of getting first dibs on deals?

Nope. I like it free and I just refresh my browser every 5 minutes.

Yup, as long as I get first dibs on good deals.

That's the joy of bargain hunting…always on the look out, sometimes you get lucky by being the last person to place your order before stocks run out, some times you miss out by 15 seconds…and that's the thrill of the game. Putting a priority queue kills that thrill and makes it an elitist club.

Love Ozb like the way it is :)

    Great job Scotty :)

There already is a VIP section where all the best deals are published first. It's just hidden from the general public because it's by invite only. It's one of my favourite features.

    Just kidding. ;)

    • Sounds a bit like the 'lounge' forum on Whirlpool. I'll never know what's inside it. Sigh

Wow, 5th in Australia. Not too bad..

personally, i've never liked any idea about VIP benefits for members, if you want to get more out of your ozbargain experience, put in the effort like TA imo… that is part of the thrill here to me, you get some, you miss some, but you're logged in to try another day :)

  • Dumb question: Why do people go to ebay.com? Is it worth having an ebay.com account as well as a ebay.com.au?

quite a few time when i search with Google for a product it gives a US ebay link, I guess a lot of people click that, also a lot of US ebay store send to Australia as well.

  • 8 million visits per month, wow.

80% is mainly just me hitting F5 all month.

    Weird suggestion by OP.
Of course free and open is better.

It's actually been mooted a few times before IIRC; thankfully the admins have always agreed that it's counterproductive to the spirit of the OzB community! :)

  • I'll join the paid VIP group only when TA post a FREE VIP membership offer ;-)

I was scanning the article half a dozen times to see where OzBargain was mentioned, didn't realise that it was listed in the table "Most Popular". Two problems here

    1. It is treating OzBargain as a "retailer". We get heaps of emails each month from people thinking we are the actual retailer rather than a community website, asking where are their goods, whether they can get the discount or whether they can price match, etc. I am not surprised the Money Magazine editor glanced through the list thinking "what's this ozbargain site and what are they selling?!". Otherwise why wouldn't other huge communities listed? Whirlpool? Essential Baby/Kids? I was expecting OzBargain to be mentioned in the "Crack The Code to Save Even More" section or hacks to find better deals, etc.

    2. Source: Experian, September 2014. I'll take that with a grain of salt. We actually published our August stats here — 7 million visits from the actual Analytics vs. 8.1 million here estimated by Experian. Someone actually sent the Experian stats from January this year to me, and the monthly visits range wildly from 2 million to 10 million, whereas our actual stats is pretty flat. So I'll say you can't believe the stats they estimated for OzBargain, nor can you believe the stats they estimated for other retailers.

Also google "Emi Berry Money Magazine" — sometimes I wonder how many of those are sponsored editorials.
