Do Men OzBargainers Buy Their Partners Flowers?

Just curious?

Do Men Ozbargainers Buy Their Partners Flowers?

Wondering, as my Wife loves her flowers, and nags me all year to get her some. I usually buy her flowers maybe twice a year. But she would probably secretly like it to be around 4 times a year.
She's not picky and happy with $10-$15 flowers which is usually all that I spend on her, just likes the romantic tradition of getting flowers and being surprised.
But I don't like getting her flowers, I would rather get her something of value, but she likes them, so I do as I said get her some a couple of times per year.

So Ozbargainers how often do you buy your partner flowers?

Thanks.

yes, but only when they are 90% off

    • Give the man a cookie. I won't pay a fortune for flowers. Show me $5 bunches of flowers that don't look half dead and I'll buy $20 work.

      • +4

At aldi they have $5 bunches of roses I get my gf, they aren't massive but they last quite a while.

        • +2

Just get plastic ones, will save you heaps in the long term + reusable like eneloops

  • +4

Yes, now occasionally, my budget is from $25-50. ones for $10-15 arnt really fresh or great looking. They can last up to 2 weeks if bought freshly cut and maintained at a caring level.

3 main occasions when are bought
Birthday, Xmas and anniversary, And at random times.

    • +25

I can understand Birthday and Anniversary but Xmas? How is Xmas meant to be romantic? oh well guess this is why I'm single.

  • +38

Yes. I just started buying flowers more regularly. See it as an investment. $10-$20 every now and then is a small price to pay to keep your wife smiling.

    • +4

A picture of flowers in a photo frame can do as well.

    • +1

You'd be better with a potted plant. As song as its looked after, it will last much longer.
Cut flowers are a waste of money. Thankfully, my wife is as practical as I am. She feels the same way,

Just remembered a story. A long time ago, I was seeing a girl who was high maintenance. I used to buy her flowers when I visited her at work. The local florist sold red roses in lots of 5, so id buy 10. After being scolded a few times, I asked what the problem was. She said "10 is bad luck and if you loved me, you'd buy 12". That was the last time I bought her flowers :)

    Grow your own rose bushes!

I love my flowers ( Honey, hint hint!) and get sad when they die :(

Boyfie started getting flowers from the green grocer ($7-$15 as compared to $50-$60 from the florist) however they don't last as long.

    • +4

I somehow think if we had rose bushes and then I picked the rosebushes and gave her them as flowers it WOULD NOT count!

      Love the thought though!

      • +15

Give her 6 home grown roses with a $10 note attached?

        • +4

          So romantic.

        • +8

*$10 gift voucher that you scored in a deal.

        • +16

that you only paid $5 for

      • +2

Actually I don't like flowers but when my ex BF would cut a post from his garden, I really really liked it.

  • +15

Buy potted plants.. She gets her flowers, and a plant that will keep producing them (hopefully).

    • +2

      My wife likes both!

    • Potted plants are work though.

  • +2

Buy frangipani trees: they flower for a good part of the year (in warm climates)

    • the sap from some varieties can cause skin irritation and rashes.

      • +9

You're not meant to lick them.

        • +5

          but they look so delicious…

  • +10

My wife doesn't want me to buy her dead things…

Of course this doesn't extend to anything you eat - she just thinks cut flowers are a waste of money. If we ever buy a place that can have a garden, I'm sure she will be delighted to have some growing flowers.

  • +12

My wife doesn't like me spending money on her.If I'm feeling romantic, I just cut some from our garden or the neighbours' and put them in a nice vase, with a little handwritten poem or quotes from her favorite authors. She keeps the poems in a shoe box and sometime, dries some of the flowers and use them as bookmarks.Cost $0 , free brownie points: priceless :)

    • This, some roses in the garden are easy to look after, and when they bloom you cut a few and bring them inside.

We inherited some roses in the garden of the house we bought. I am a crap gardener but they throw out a nice rose here and there that smell wonderful inside.

We used to have a "Gifts & Flowers" category here on OzBargain, however we removed that last month as it was rarely used…

    • +8

I guess that answers Treeman's question : obviously we don't.

    • Interesting.

So, is the gift and flower industry really about about giving?

      or more about taking?

lol, love to see more analytic's regarding this industry!

  • +30

My wife loved me buying her flowers when we were dating.. but she frowns upon flower buying now that we are married. The reason is she realised that the money for the flowers is now coming out of our joint account, ie. she is actually paying half for the flowers. :)

    • This is why you always need a joint account plus one personal "pocket money" account each - just with a small amount put into it each year, so you can give a gift that they are not paying half of, buy yourself something small without having to justify it to your partner, etc.

      • +2

I'd be inclined to have a joint account, so i could get away not buying her any gifts. She'd just realise it was half paid by her each time and feel guilty :p

    • +11

We never buy gifts for each other. We give each other booklets of IOUs instead for special occasions. We started this tradition over a decade ago , when we were both struggling students. The IOUs can be used for anything:

      • romantic rides and picnics,
      • doing the dishes for a week,
      • a very sensuous full body massage
      • watch my choice of movie
      • hang out with her friends and act like I'm having fun
      • breakfast in bed
      • babysitting so the other one can have a night out with the boys/girls
      • a whole day of doing my own stuff, free from any sulkiness
      • a sleep-in while the other take care of the kids and menagerie.
      • getting me to climb on top of the roof at 1.00 a.m to eat cheesecake and stargaze into the vast night sky.
      • making my wildest fantasy come true…etc
      • +2

        -romantic rides and picnics,

        Who rides who?

-making my wildest fantasy come true…etc

        • +6

          Who rides who?

hmmm… its been a while. Those romantic rides were pre-kids. Now we take them along and if we stop at the chemist on the way, its to replenish the first aid kit , not to buy condoms. But its still fun.

        • @Jar Jar Binks: should've bought more condoms the first time around

        • +3

@sk3iron: let's just say , it was a star wars re-enactment , that included a glow in the dark condom, hmm gone wrong right. You win the internet if you can guess my twins' middle name :p

Costco. Two dozen roses are 35 bucks. That's cheap

    • Add in the membership fee and it isn't that cheap.

    • Roses are just standard plants that grow like weeds. They also regenerate, unlike many other flowers.

$35 may be cheap at a retail level, but it is insanely high margins at a wholesale level.

  • +5

I'm a woman and although now married, always tried to let everyone who might buy me flowers that I would not want them. I consider them to be a burden. The only one I enjoy are natives, particularly the very large single flowers that you can display as a single stem or perhaps three stems. I'm talking about those ones that are about 25cm wide. They last weeks abd require no care. I spoke with my husband on Saturday as we were driving to a new restaurant. I asked if those extortionist hags ever came around in that town and sold flowers in restaurants and clubs. He said yes, sometimes. I implored him to never cave into that. It is so mercenary.

    • +2

Congrats on finding the 'one'! :) From some of your previous post, it sounded like that there was a serious shortage of good guys where you live. Wish you n your hubby all the best :)

      • -1

Thanks. Apparently the shortage of good men in the west is eclipsed by the shortage of normal women in the east….

    • Felicitations on your marriage :)

      • R u french, wintergirl?

        • keep ur hands off Jar ;)..lol

        • @ahly92: Was intrigued by her use of the word 'felicitation', which is more commonly used in french than in english.

          keep ur hands off Jar

Should I intepret your comment as meaning that the two of you are an item? ;)

  • cool

  • +5

I buy my wife flowers every fortnight. It's nice to have fresh flowers in the house.

  • +2

you do if you know whats good for you; its also why im alone! a true OZB is either going to be single or will be…

    • +8

Maybe scotty and mods should look into adding a dating category in the forum section. Single ozbargainers could meet each other, fall in love and have lots of little future ozbargainers :)

      • +11

and have lots of little future ozbargainers

Scott, this could be a cheap way to grow the userbase in the longterm.

        • +29

Thanks! Added to my idea list for April 1st next year.

        • @scotty: hahaha, this will be gold :P Looking forward to it

  • +3

I wonder how male ozbargainers react/would react if their partners bought them flowers.

    • +15

Probably in a similar way to how a female might react if their partner bought them a power tool.

      • +2

        Nothing wrong with power tools!

      • +1

My wife loves power tools. She does however prefer them in pink. ;-)

      • +2

Benny Benassi - Satisfaction music video seems to suggest females like power tools :)

    • +1

Is Mr wicket1120 getting flowers tonight? ;)

      • nah, I'll get him a power tool instead. Although I doubt he would know what to do with it :p

        • My darling wife, I would refer you to this commenton what a handy man is. No powertool needed… and if it makes you blush, blame greenpossum , not me :p

  • +2

Flowers themselves are a waste of money, but the gesture of giving usually means a lot to the other party.

I basically Farmville this scenario. Planted a small variety of flowers around the back and when they are in bloom or ready to bloom, splice then give them to my girlfriend. Happy days!

  • +29

Do yourself and your wife/family a favour. Buy them at least once a month. $5 or $10 for 2x bunches at Aldi is a very small investment. Sadly you only realise this when your family isn't there anymore. Like mine. Ask them to talk to you - then shut up and listen - hard. Do things more the way they want to, than you know makes logical sense - even if you can see it is a mistake. Then shrug your shoulders and say that's ok when it turns out wrong. Tell them you love them every day so the day they leave you never comes.

    • +2

You're making me sad. I don't like sad.

    • +1

It's never too late to turn things around, mate.

      • Not if she cheated.

    • +1

Looking back, I have this to regret: that too often when I loved, I did not say so

@RFM, I am sorry for your loss :(

      • +4

Thank you all. Sadly I there's not much hope it will turn around. So guys, love your wives. No, I mean it - LOVE your wives.

    • @realfamilyman ;__; plz be happy..

      • +1

Not much for me to look forward to. And to answer something above… No cheating was involved. Just… aw, it doesn't matter. Just things I did that ruined our marriage over many years. Some I wasn't even aware were hurting her, some I was.

She admits wrongs too. But did much less wrong than I did. I thought we were always aplogising, giving clean slates - and would still stand together and defend each other til the end of time. Then one day, just no-one came home.

I really don't know what I have from here on. Nothing it seems. Don't even know why I come here. I don't buy anything anymore. There's no reason to. They were my entire life. They took my life with them when they left.

    • Holy crap RFM! I'm so sorry. I always loved the way you talked about how you and your wife worked as a team saving money and doing things for the kids. I am pretty shocked about this. I actually had affection fir you two as a couple and family unit, based on what you'd write.

I hope you are taking care of yourself and at you have at least one and preferably more than one, person to talk to.

      • Not a single one actually. All our friends were common to us both and for reasons I cannot explain here, I cannot see a single one of them.

  • +1

No. You would go around to the neighbors and cut some roses from their front yard :-)

  • +2

usually buy my wife 5/6 times a year but the cost for oriental lilies (her fav) are good at $12 :)

  • +4

Wait… You can do both? I hadn't realised you could have a partner AND be an Ozbargainer.

  • Twice a year. Anniversary and Valentine's

  • +16

flowers give me allergies, so she thinks

    • HAHA this is genius!!! made me laugh like a seal!

  • -2

Usually Men Ozbargainers don't have partners! They pretend they do, or they buy their own blow up doll when its at least 50% off or on clearance.

    • +2

buy their own blow up doll when its at least 50% off

Well at least they are not paying inflated prices for them. ;)

  • Buy her cacti!

  • I can't remember ever buying my wife flowers, apart from the ones we bought for wedding ceremony. Been married 12 years now. They are expensive for what you get out them, money better spent on us going to the movies or out to dinner, or a hundred other things.

Get some nice fake flowers, they look nice forever, or go for some nice native arrangements.

    • +6

Pick your target VERY carefully if you're planning on taking home artificial flowers. They're not to everyone's taste.

  • when im cheap i just go nextdoor and rip em out of next doors neighbours yard lol… else I go to woolies and buy em when they are 50% off lol

  • +2

Last year my wife and I were living in her home country of Colombia. About 70% of the flowers purchased in the US come from the regions surrounding Bogota. So a big bunch of perfect roses selling for probably $100 in NYC on valentines day at the local markets costs about $1 :). I bought probably a lifetime worth of flowers in that one year haha

  • Flowers are very expensive, why we don't have any deals for flowers here?
not a good job Ozbies! Not happy at all

    • that's a fantastic idea… you can start the ball rolling and get us the first deal.

  • +5

there is a cemetery on the way home from my work….

  • My partner is the local whorehouse so flowers would be rather redundant.

  • +1

I do both, grow and buy. Buy roughly only twice a year, but when the roses are out, occasionally cut them and leave them on the table/bed/random place.

We have a larger garden, so I try and make use of it. ;)

  • +2

Yep, $5 Aldi flowers a few times a year then 1 dozen on anniversary.

  • +1

I buy my partner flowers perhaps once every 3 months. But usually its a single stalk of rose to surprise her with placed next to her pillow when she's asleep. They don't cost much but makes her pretty happy :)

  • +5

Total waste of money. My husband used to buy me flowers - but then I suggested that another gift would be more appropriate. In truth it was because I was fed up with clearing up all the droppings of their petals & the fact that they died so quickly. Nowadays I receive my favourite gift - 1 dozen oysters -yum! - at least I get to enjoy them. The flowers we both enjoy are in the garden to enjoy for months on end - not cut & stuck in a vase to die.

  • Valentines Day (unless an alternative like a dress/jewellery) and on special occasions (i.e. coming out of hospital). Once in a while keeps her happy, if I forget - she certainly doesn't !!!

  • I buy them once or twice a year. But they are a waste of money in my opinion. Makes the missus happy getting them randomly, so it evens out a bit. Wont spend more then $20 on them. Rather buy giftsthat last.

  • i give her coupons for her birthday and anniversary :)

  • +1

i don't have a partner therefore i spend all my flower money on drink, drugs and ps4 games

    • +5

      and eneloops

  • +1

3x in the last 10 YEARS I've known my wife, 1x includes our wedding day.

I keep telling her that flowers DIE, then they go in the BIN… total waist.
