surprise surprise, samsung was first this time, in fact, by about 2 years

where this $15 can be used. I suspect its more of optus money which cant be used anywher else except optus app.

    • +1

It says anywhere which visa paywave is accepted.

    • Could also being used online as they apparently give:

Visa Prepaid Debit card details accessed via the app to make payments of up to $250 online or over the phone.

  • I feel like you need more info in the title. (Now fixed - thanks)

There is a small list of compatible phones too. No Motorola phones and only one HTC are compatible according to them.

    • +1

I have a Nexus 5, and I chose the Samsung Galaxy S3 as the 'compatible' phone since they both take micro SIM cards.
      fingers crossed

      • -1

That's not going to work. The Nexus 6 might - not sure.

        • BTW, I just got an N4 and Westpac appears under Tap & Pay in the settings, but I assume this doesn't work either (not sure why it appears then.)

        • @McFly: Not sure about the Westpac solution, but the N4 doesn't support Single Wire Protocol, which is required to use this SIM card's features.

      • +1

        Could you install the app?
You may have to Root and rename your device so the systems thinks it's a compatible device?

      • Less to do with the SIM side and more the OS side of things. Your first hurdle will be installing the app, visiting the Play Store shows you that your phone is not compatible, but a bit of tweaking on your phone's side will let you install it anyway. From there, you need to get it to be recognised by the Android's built-in wallet feature, which you can find inside settings under Tap and Go. If you manage to install the app and see the app there, you're set.

And if you manage to pull it off, please let everyone know, I personally am waiting to see if I can use this on my N5 :)

EDIT: Tried to install the app using Market Helper (spoofs your device) to no avail (Google refused to think my phone was compatible)

Some further research showed that the Nexus 5, while physically capable of the special kind on NFC required (NFC-SWP), is not software capable on the hardware routing side.

      • Nexus 5 is technically compatible IIRC, but needs slight software modifications to activate the SWP NFC. Nexus 4 definitely won't work as the hardware is included, but not connected.

Can virgin mobile users get this too?
I have recently signed up a note 4 with virgin and it comes with all optus bloatware just wondering if I can use this service too

  • If only I wasn't on Vaya…

  • Signed up, now to wait the week for the sim

  • So not for prepaid users?

  • I guess it probably doesn't work for Liveconnected (they use Optus towers)

    • +1

To make your money mobile, you’ll first need:
      an Optus monthly mobile plan

  • My New Sony Z3 isn't compatible :( Wanted the 15 bucks

    • That's quite bizzare. If it makes you feel any better, my old HTC One X, which also has NFC is not on the list either.

  • -1

So you basically need to load money from your savings account to a special Optus account so they can collect merchant fees when you use payWave?
Seems like a lot of hassle.
The thing I like about Apple Pay is it works with exisiting bank accounts and credit cards.

    • But Apple Pay isn't available here in Australia yet

    • +1

You forgot one big detail - you NEED iphone 6 and 6+. Where as pretty much all high end android phones for last 3 years have NFC.

    "Requirements:

Be on a monthly plan with Optus"

That killed it. $15 savings doesn't offset Optus's exorbitant plan rates. Still running on Vaya $11/month.

    • +1

      Still running on Vaya $11/month.

When your initial 24 month period is up, you will have to pay an additional $9.90 to stay on the same plan.

      • Yeah, I'm on the $7 so it more than doubled the other week. Will probably go up to the $18 (since they charge per MB now, not that the CIS specifies that properly…)

      • +1

Is it $9.90 extra per month or a one-off?
Upgrading to $18/month would be better than $20.9/month.
Being able to brag having the best value $11 plan to friends was great.

        • Every month, go look on Whirlpool Forums….Vaya is a burning, sinking ship unfortunately.

  • I have an HTC One X, which has NFC but is not on Optus's list. Anyone knows if it would work if I select HTC One M7 when filling out the form?

  • Why do they need to issue new SIM cards? Is there something special about the new ones?

    • Yes, a secure area (for financial transactions.)

  • +3

Upon signup this is the message you receive.

Thanks for requesting a Cash by Optus™ SIM. You should receive it within a week.

Once you’ve got your Cash by Optus™ SIM, download the Cash by Optus™ app and use it to load funds from your bank account to your Cash by Optus™ facility. You’ll then be ready to make contactless Visa payWave purchases under $100 with a wave of your phone anywhere in Australia where Visa payWave is accepted. Or make online or phone purchases up to $250 with your Visa Prepaid Debit card details accessible through the app.

    • +2

So it looks like a digital equivalent of a Visa Debit card? I don't need yet another card, especially not a Debit one.

  • +1

Interesting, this is being handled by heritage bank (as per the PDS)

    • +1

same as the Virgin Flyer card (velocity)

  • +1

nice to see networks going out hard cold cash.

    • Yeah, Optus spent hundreds of thousands setting up an electronic payment system so they can then send out 15,000 bits of plastic by snail mail.

    • Its just Optus Branded with Heritage Bank handling everything.
Tomorrow you will find Lyca Cash handled with Raboo Bank lol

    • +1

It will most likely be credit for their payment system, not cold hard cash.

Just wanted to let everyone know that unless your phone supports NFC-SWP and you manage to hack your firmware in a way that the app likes it, you can not run this on a non-listed device.

This is because of the NFC-SWP feature, which is some sort of authentication module between the SIM and the phone through NFC, and having NFC doesn't necessarily mean you have that feature.

    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5641159/Other/Screenshot…
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/5641159/Other/Screenshot…

My attempt on the Nexus 5 gave me these results, the app shows up under Tap and Pay, but won't actually authenticate me.

All said, not all unlisted devices won't work. An example is my Galaxy Nexus, which was not listed, but only returned an error of having a non-NFC SIM.

So TL;DR - If you can download app from Play Store, you're good to go. Otherwise, you have little hope.

  • ref "SPECIAL OFFER*: As a sweet little bonus, we’ll give you $15 to get you started on Cash by Optus™ as long as you are one of the first 10,000 customers to register before 15 December 2014." does that mean you need to install the app and register and make a purchase by 15 dec? I planned to get a s5 for xmas for the wife and registered for the deal now to order the new sim but not sure if u need to install app and make a purchase by 15th dec?

  • There's a $1.95 a month for inactive card, does that mean if you don't use the paywave? Or if you're no longer with Optus?
Can you opt out of Cash by Optus at any time?

  • anyone get their sim yet? tried activating today but call centre is saying error with the sim…..
UPDATE: seems to be an issue with a batch of sims that are corrupt and have been told to order a new sim.

    • Hi guys,
I also have the issue as well.

    • Were you able to order a new SIM through the link - it said to me that I had already ordered one.

      • was just about to say, yes when filling in the form again it said i had already registered… so might have to give them a call this afternoon to see if they can do it from their end.

  • Tried calling again to order new sim…they had no idea what i was taking about. telling me to go into a store to swap the sim. i tried explaining at least 5 times.. this isn't a normal sim so now he has send off some request and will call back by the end of tomorrow. Cant see that happening

    • The guy in the Optus store I went to tonight had not heard of this special sim either. In the process of swapping SIMs I managed to lose my original so he gave me a replacement ordinary SIM. You think it would be easy just to activate it online (the phone number is in my hubby's name so he couldn't do it in store). Online Chat are so difficult to deal with!!!

      Megan:I'll be right with you.
      You:ok
Megan:Thank you for waiting. I'll be with you in just a moment.
      You:ok
Megan:Please contact our activation team, they can help you better.
Megan:I am sorry I am from sales.
You:Can you transfer me to activation team online chat?
You:I have tried activating online but I don't have an order number for this sim as it is a replacement sim. I need to organise the activation with live chat instead
Megan:I am sorry they don't have chat.
      Megan:You need to call them.
You:What is their phone number and working hours?
Megan:For Post-paid activations, you can call us at 1800-555-050. We are available Monday - Friday from 9am to 5:30pm EST.

Finally got it to work… Someone from Optus social media contacted me and gave me this info.

    From your mobile call 1509
    Choose Option 5
    Then
    Choose option 1

It will ask for the new Sim card number then a bit of music before another message to say take ur old sim out and put new one in and that it would take anywhere between 15mins-4hrs to activate.

For me by by the time I turned phone off put Sim in and back on again the Sim was already working.

After that I switched on NFC and activated cash by Optus using the app with no issues. Also got the $15 credit

Hope this helps and works for you too!

    • Thanks Schumi5, that worked! I don't know why they didn't provide that info with the paperwork!

  • Note that this isn't available for people on Optus Business (who get their phone paid by work).

  • Just went to use this but noticed it says the new sim has a different phone number… anyone know if you can use your old number somehow? thanks.

    • actually I probably got sims mixed up :p

  • Just letting everyone know I cut the SIM down to Nano and put it in my Xperia Z3 Compact - and it works! Yes
