Taking Advantage of "New Customer Only" Deals? (Eg. Woolworths Everyday Rewards)

Hi,

Recently there have been quite a few deals Woolworths coupons for new Everyday Rewards customers. I'm assuming that a common practice among ozbargainers is to create a new (secondary) customer account in order to qualify for the deal.

Is that just unethical? Or is it more serious and considered fraudulent if you sign up with a fake name etc?

What is the consensus amongst other ozbargainers? Is creating a second (or third) New Customer account a dishonest thing to do? Or is it OK because they don't actively prohibit it? (by disallowing multiple EDR cards for a single address)

Deals I am referring to:

I would go so far as signing up other people in my family, but to create fake names is going too far and is fraud. I'll bet that you'll never get caught, but if Woolworths finds out and chases you up for it, you could have to pay them back, go to court…etc.

that would be great PR, taking customers to court for taking advantage of loopholes in their system. it's their responsibility to ensure their systems are not vulnerable to this kind of thing.

the worst they are gonna do, as we have seen numerous examples of, is cancel orders.

    • They won't sue, they'll just amend T&C to prohibit this if they don't already and then new cases would just have accounts suspended and all points voided.

Doing any more than that is just a waste of their time and money. Sheesh. Australia is litigious now but not THAT litigious.

Ask Woolworths about defrauding customers, false advertising, price manipulation and fixing as well as aggressive demands on suppliers ie. milk wars putting dairy farmers out of business. They defraud the government of millions in taxes yearly. Only 10% of corporates actually pay taxes…

So they didn't incur $1,056,700,000 in income tax last financial year?

Income tax. Personal income that has been taxed.

Company tax. Paid by companies on profits.

Research the difference, while your there research Ireland tax haven where there is 0% tax where most corporate businesses pass their transactions through.

You've also forgot to mention any of the other subjects I also brought to your attention.

        Research my son. Research.

I suggest you read AASB 112 Income Tax before you try and deflect from the fact that Woolworths pays tax.

    • I don't understand this argument.

If you want to live under a socialist/communist model, I completely understand. I, too, believe that everyone should have a job where they work for the greater good of the community and take what they need. It'd be great if everyone, including Woolworths, stuck to those ideals.

However, the truth is, we don't. We live in a capitalist society, i.e. a dog-eat-dog society, where if you can't stay in business, then you should go find another line of work. There's nothing wrong with Woolworths placing aggressive demands on suppliers, if the suppliers can't meet demand, then naturally there will be more suppliers entering the market, such is supply and demand.

That said, I do agree that dodging tax is not on.

I think it is dishonest - I don't care what they do to rip people off. It's about personal ethics. I don't mind joining up for a bank or company to get a discount offer for new customers, but I wouldn't create a fake account, or even one for my kids, just to get a discount.

Whether or not creating fake accounts is fraud is not an issue I know much about - I just think it is personally wrong. But if it is fraud, and even if it is 'OK' to defraud a large company, think of what you're doing. You're just skimming money from shareholders and people's superannuation. I know that it is a miniscule amount, but that doesn't make it OK.

Personally, when I put up the deal my reasoning was that if Coles/Woolworths instead of having a Marketing department & paying internationals chefs a huge endorsement fee & MORE would only use the same money to give the shoppers back 10 -15% on an everyday basis with a few more generous offers randomly during the year, they would have more people shopping there & therefore generating more revenue.

Do people really buy more of the Jamie Oliver plates just because it has his signature on it? That said though, I didn't expect folks to put in an unreasonable amount of orders just to get the discount, which is what happened when I went in yesterday evening to collect my order and the poor staff had pages and pages of orders fulfilled.

In America some dogs and cats gets credit cards. So there's that.

I doubt they care, they make a lot of money and would factor in a 1 or 2% fake sign up rate for the whole program, and even 5% on these 'new member' discount deals.

The fact is they make more money out of the programs, repeat shops and overspending than they lose from a few handful extremist bargaineers.

I'd wager they could get as high as 20% fake sign ups and they'd still be ahead, making heaps of money on the 80%.

  • You can argue all you like about how it doesn't affect Woolworths. But that doesn't make it right.

Just to clarify, with the recent Woolworths deals, I've taken the opportunity to create a few new accounts with my real name and address and contact details, and my existing EDR card. The only point of difference has been the email address (I have a few). So there is actually no need to sign up with fake name / create a new EDR card etc - the woolworths online system accepts the input of existing customer details when registering for a new account. Data matching does appear to have taken place (as some people with multiple orders have had them cancelled), however I haven't had any problems so far.
