Salary Packaging a Laptop and a Monitor

Guys,

Could anybody advise where it is possible to buy (preferably online) a laptop bundled with a monitor so that both would appear with one price in the invoice?

In the past the Dell online store invoice was issued this way but it seems now all bundled items go itemized with their own prices. I am trying to salary package a laptop and a monitor but it only works if they appear under one total price in the invoice.

  • I wouldn't risk being caught by the ATO

What could be the issue? Please enlighten.

I can't see why most places couldn't "build you a system" on an invoice, but whether they would is another issue entirely. Perhaps try some smaller stores?

  • Your best bet would be to find a small computer store. However i don't think any of these will do it for you.

  • Okay the issue I understand could be from the tax treatment point. Salary sacrificed laptop used for work purposes is an exempt fringe benefit. That means that your employer would not have to pay FBT. However I am not sure but if the invoice shows monitor that benefit may require the employer to pay fringe benefit on the grossed up value of the monitor.

  • The monitor isn't packagable. It's a peripheral, doesn't run on a battery and isn't integral to the laptop. Claiming it is tax fraud. You might get away with it if no one checks, but it would be pretty irresponsible giving you advice to do so. The law is at http://law.ato.gov.au/atolaw/view.htm?locid=%27PAC/19860039/… - if it isn't portable (and one of the tests is being able to run without an external power supply attached), if it isn't part of the device, then it's not packagable.

Try depreciating the monitor if you have a business use for it.
