i'm gonna have to wait for ethereal88's advice on these…

    • You're thinking of hyperthreading, that's Intel technology.

Hmmm. Not true. The cores on a AMD FX series are indeed real physical cores — however the cores are placed as pairs onto a module and they're designed to work individually but still sharing resources. The benchmark program however reported the cores as logical rather than physical cores because of the fact that the cores are placed in pairs within the same module.

There's a very good explanation here

See this die shot of the AMD FX 8350

AMD FX processor cores generally take a performance hit since they all share resources within their module with another core. Which is why they're all generally weak at individual core performance, but they still represent pretty good value if your goal is to build a gaming computer on the cheap.

  • this is one hell of a bargain if you're building a budget gaming PC … just make very sure your motherboard is rated for the correct TDP

    • Yeah, bargain cheap but they run hot according to specs. Good if you don't mind otherwise expect faster/louder running fans or needing better/more expensive cooling compared to Intel for equivalent performance.

      • mine right now with just Firefox open is at 30c
during winter it idles around 20c
my cooler fan is down low so not to make too much noise though.

    • Arwedda, if the motherboard specs says the chip is compatible, does this mean that the TDP is ok? I'm thinking of pairing it with the GA-970A-D3P (or is there a better motherboard to use)? Thanks

If it's listed as compatible then yes it will work (provided the you have the required BIOS version or newer installed). I would avoid overclocking with your motherboard though.

        • it won't work well with one or two lower end motherboards such as M5A78L-M LX V2

there's one or two motherboards that will thermally throttle the FX-6300 and not let it run to spec. it'll run but not as fast as it should … a warning sign is that you need to update the bios to use the processor

          the GA-970A-D3P will be great

  • 6300 is a good processor for the price.
    i have one paired with a R9 280x.

  • thanks for the explanation scrimshaw

    :)

  • Hey can anyone tell me the aproximate shipping to Australia (more specifically Melbourne if possible).
    Amazon doesn't show it ;.;

    • The shipping is already factored into OP's title price I think.
