Maybe, but they wouldn't be havaianas

    • +1

they are but they dont last long

      • -8

        Have you compared them?

        • -3

all thongs are probably made from the same cheap material, and most people that buy havies, buy it for the brand.
          Nevertheless, havaianas are usually 20-30$

        • +5

@Jonski: I actually buy it for the quality. I have had numerous cheap pairs and Havaiana pairs. No joke my Havaiana pairs last well over 2 years. That includes me running, playing soccer, boomerang games with them etc. pretty often. Not once a week or anything.

Cheaper pairs only last a few months before the soles die out. I always find the Havaiana pairs end up dying at the plug section which snaps off :(

        • +3

          @Jonski: Big W reckons it's normally $15.

        • @dannyboi: It was. I saw them the other day and was considering buying.

        • +2

i actually have compared the two. have you?

my dad has a pair of cheap target/big w thongs, they are terribly uncomfortable. theyre extremely stiff and lost their shape in no time

        • @Jonski: So you're saying this as a guess and you haven't actually bought anything correct? How is anyone supposed to take this seriously unless they just want to "confirm" their own guesses without actually looking to the real world? ;)

        • yes, I have.

  • But these are the must have Havies.
Bright coloured and themed and abundant with some sort of history.
    You are right JV.
Imagine my surprise when I found this study from 2012 suggesting thongs are good for children:
    http://sydney.edu.au/news/84.html?newsstoryid=9013
I was always taught you need proper support for your feet with an ankle strap etc.

  • Are these any stronger than regular thongs?

    • -1

      no

      • oh well. look at those people buying luxury branded products. are they the same stereotype?

        • But, but, but.. They have the word 'Havaianas' on them!

          ..Whatever that means.

        • @tommy-darko: it means "you've been had" in portugeuse

        • @didsburydan: Actually it means "from Hawaii" in Portuguese.

        • +1

          @ale227: that's false advertising

So are we only allowed to post $5 T-shirts from The Huts/Paul's Warehouse? And no iPhone posts should be allowed to be posted as they are made from the same material as a $150 non-branded Android phone

        • +6

          don't be ridiculous

        • Hell mayne let's just go all the way and allow one cheapest item that's made of a material and ban everything else. Because according to these comments if it's made of the same stuff then it's the same and you only "percieve" it as being different.

You know: Ford Focus = VW Golf, Doctor Martin = dress shoes - all the same cos they made of the same stuff.

          Totes.

      • +3

        No, you are actually wrong.
Havaianas I find are a lot more comfortable than cheap rubbish thongs which you are claiming to be the same. They might LOOK the same, but the quality definitely is not the same.

Hold a pair of havaianas and inspect them, and then compare them to a similar pair from target or big w. then you can head back home after realising that youve been wrong this whole time.

Bought sunglasses the other day. Paid a goddamn ****load (for me anyhow). Salesperson tried to get me to buy some that cost 25% less but out of the tens I tried I just preferred these sunglasses.

Now after reading this thread I find out they they we're all the same thing and it was just my silly "perceptions" warping reality making them different. What a silly billy I am.

I don't think Havianas are any stronger than regular thongs but they are by far the most comfortable thongs I have worn.
I have tried cheap $2 ones, mid-range surfwear branded ones like Billabong / Ripcurl to the more expensive branded ones like Lacoste. Havianas still comes out tops in terms of comfort and you wear them all day no problems.
There's a reason why they are so popular and it is NOT because of brand consciousness. I definitely do not feel any more luxurious just because I am wearing Havianas !

  • In my opinion, havies, do feel more comfortable because they have a better cut than most no brand thongs, they are made from the same material and from the same place.

    • Do they last 5x longer than those $2 ones?

      • +3

Maybe, maybe not depending on your luck. But they are definitely 5x more comfy than the $2 ones ! Durability is only one factor. When it comes to footwear, comfort is just as important (if not more) a selection criteria !

      • +1

Yes they definitely do, have bought heaps of cheap pairs and they are flat in no time

  • +12

In my experience the material used by havianas seem to be denser than the cheap ones sold by kmart. They hold their shape at the sole for much longer than some cheaper ones.

Not saying they will always last 5x longer than $2 ones, but in my experience minimum breakage period is 2 years. And even when the strap snaps, the sole retains most of its original shape

    • I've had a pair of Havianas since 2006… 8 years and still going strong! I find the $2 pairs go flat in the heel and ball of the feet in a few months and then they tear or the strap snaps, whereas the Havianas are still comfy years later

  • What I notice more in that catalogue was the freaky hipster on the front page. Next we will see a mullet model for their flannel shirts.

    • So I'm not the only one disturbed a little by that guy.

  • +2

Havai look at the $8 double pluggers from K-Mart. Just as comfortable, last twice and long and you're only a bonds singlet and stubbies shorts away from wife beater attire… straya

  • Does anyone know where you can get those massaging kind of flip flops with those little bumps on it?

    • +2

Hold on while I take a time machine back to 1978, ask my great grandfather's bingo club friends and get back to you.

You are thinking of the reflexology massage sandals.

      http://www.yourdiscountchemist.com.au/maseur-invigorating-ma…

Back in the day geriatrics purchased these from the chemist.

Look for a chemist with a large metal scale (weight measuring device) out the front which takes 20c or preferably 5c pieces, and a powdered fruit drink dispenser based on plastic cup technology.

  • Havaiana thongs are the best thongs I have worn. They last well over a year and that is me wearing them every day. I never slip in them either. They are made from more rubber than foam and last a lot longer than cheaper thongs. I pay $30 a pair (slim metallic strap) and don't mind because it lasts me well over a year. I replace it when it wears thin. I have never had a pair of Havaianas break on me while I am wearing it. I wouldn't even risk slipping and breakage by wearing cheap $2 thongs!

    • I have to admit, I go all goo goo gah gah when I see girls in Havaianas.

  • Very slim pickings available. Basic black or blue.

  • My experience:

Cheapies - last 6 months, comfy because they are too soft (sole wears).

Havi's - For people with skinny feet. I'm 6 foot, 79kg, size 11. Half my feet overhang. Hard soles, wear well. friends who swear by them know they will die via blow out (center strap is their weakness). Last 1 year.

Travisty - Bought 3 years ago from Target for $10,wear them everyday, worn all over Europe (including Pompeii). A little slippery in the rain, but I bought 2 more spares when these beasts retire. FYI, partners new Havi's didn't survive Europe.Bought another pair over there , they 2 have now Blown out!

  • None left at BigW Tea Tree Plaza other than (sickly?) red colour in size 7/8. Also they're in the women's section not the men's thongs section for some reason (because no difference I suppose?)

Would've tried to click and collect at another store but couldn't find the item on BigW's website and got to the point of **** you BigW, you make it too hard to save $3 off the Kogan price I got a while back :|

Just went to Broadmeadows VIC store - The footwear section looked like a tidal wave had gone through it. I was tempted to 'trip over' and put a claim in tbh. There was absolutely NO signage/tickets for the Havianas, and using the self scanners I saw they were $9. Not heaps of choice, but was good enough. Thanks OP!
