  • Can you take the hard disk out to swap for SSD and install windows 8.1?

    • I don't see why not

    • yep

    • +1

But then you lose alienware os overlay thingo

      • +1

        oh no! my poor swag!

      • So clone the HDD to the SSD.

    fail Dell. no Displayport out….

    • +2

not sure why you got negged.

I was pretty tempted until you pointed that out. Having just bought a 4k monitor, displayport out is a definite must.

It can be driven by hdmi but it requires hdmi 2.0 and the Alienware Alpha only has hdmi 1.4a

      • +1

Didn't neg him - but this tiny box actually supports 4K res but only up to 30fps (given it has hdmi 1.4 output). It wasn't actually bad because movies are probably in 24 or 30 fps format. To play game nicely in native 4k res you will probably need a machine which cost over $1500. Yes it is not a perfect machine - but given the size and what it does - at this price - I'm quite impressed.

          yup - you're right about displaying 4k @ 30fps.

This is slightly apples/oranges but on my 4k monitor (UD590) run by a 7950 it is VERY laggy via HDMI even on the desktop. The mouse cursor feels like its on ice.

But through the displayport it is perfect.

Perhaps this machine can do it @ 30hz without the lagginess, but i wouldnt want to throw $799 to try it out.

          Cinematic 30fps

Is this unit good for HTPC? probably 80% movies and 20% gaming

    • +2

I would say yes - since it runs a power-optimised cpu (i5 4590T) & decent entry level vga card for gaming. These measured just 30-50 watts at idle and 85W under load.

  • This is a great alternative to a PS4. I have built my own with similar specs from a Dell 260s, games are not pushing hardware as much as they used to so it should be good for 3-5 years

  • Would this have the power to run photoshop and lightroom ? Fast, and easily ?

    • I guess my pc has similar specs and I run lightroom perfectly fine, while having a video running and 20 OzBargain tabs open. Granted, I only really edit single photos at a time. (and mine is bloated to hell, I really need to wipe and start over)

    • Yes but if you're doing extravagant editing work with 20MP images or 1GB TIFF files at 1200DPI then you know (or should know) that you need a proper workstation to do your editing on and not an Alienware glorified HTPC box.

For run-of-the-mil image resizing and editing, this is more than acceptable.

  • I would say it's a good machine, but you guys may want to read the reviews linked, in short, it would be: New hard drive if possible, and prepare for a long long day of registration and preparation of the machine

  • Tempting, but I am put off by the non-upgradeable GPU.

I wish Valve would just partner with whoever did the steam box prototype case (I assume Silverstone) and release a case + PSU.

    • +1

why would they do that? can't upgrade meaning less lifespan for gaming.

better off building your own rig and upgrade when needed.

      • +4

it converts more console peasants as its more palatable for those who dont like to get hands on or are lazy

this means bigger PC demographic and less shitty console exclusives and ports

        Win win

      • I would like to build my own rig but I am yet to find a case that is as compact as the Valve prototype steam box and can fit a mid range GPU of my choosing.

I really like the idea of the compact steam boxes.

      • why would they do that? can't upgrade meaning less lifespan for gaming.

Ever heard of planned obsolesce and making money?

You can't sell more overpriced Alienware garbage to consumers if they continue to use their old Alienware garbage, now can you?

    Not a deal its alienware.

    • Usually with this kind of thing you can say "I could just build one cheaper" but…try building something this size for this price.

      • Exactly good luck upgrading that thing in the future.

  • Purchased the i5 Alienware Alpha used the discount code it deducted the $199.20 but was charged $999.00 out of my PayPal account. Trying to rectify this through Dell and eBay. Has anybody else had this problem?

    • +1

if you login to your PayPal account, find the transaction(s), and click details, you will see a 20% contribution from eBay plus your actual charge to your funding source which makes up the difference. The total needs be 100% because the seller gets 100%. eBay just pays the 20% and you pay the rest. It should look something like this http://i.imgur.com/afbCvki.jpg (Image courtesy of ezarc - Obtained from previous 15% off offer).

      • Thanks matabuntu just found it, phew….
