OK price. The refurbed ones (i7/1tb/8gb/840m) were going for $589 from DFO.

Don't let the specs fool you - they're not very fast…the i7 4510u is a dual core ULV CPU. With an SSD it would've been ok but the mech HDD really slows things down.

was trying to play Wastelander 2 on 1386 x 768, had it on med gfx settings and it still chugged…

    • Just ordered one. JB hifi is selling it at 900ish. Would you mind clarify which SSD would suit this machine? sorry for the lack of computing knowledge.

    • Misread, never mind!

    • The switch between dedicated graphics and HD graphics is software based, and needs to be tweaked and configured. Did you do that?
I don't like this setup. In the past you could go into the bios and disable the integrated graphics so that it forced it to use the higher-performance graphics. That is not possible with this model.

      • It's done to increase battery life on the go.

Only the onboard would be used in normal scenarios to minimise battery drain, only when games are being played that it would switch over to the dedicated card.

If it was forced to used the dedicated card all the time the battery would drain super fast.

I get the logic, but the problem is that it does not always "get it right". My old laptop would refuse to use the dedicated graphics for processing heavy graphical HTML5. Even if I told it explicitly to use the dedicated graphics for the web browsers, it simply would not.
It seems to behave better now, though.

They sold these at this price back June. Keep in mind these have 1 RAM slot and 100 Mbit Ethernet

  • not a bad deal at all

  • Ordered one for my 10 year old boy for Xmas, hopefully it runs Minecraft at a decent clip :)

  • Minecraft runs fine on a HP stream 7…this is overkill!

    • Well, he likes to play with mods and texture packs, so I thought a little bit more power might be necessary.
Also, this should be able to play other games at lower settings.
