Very good headphones. Its likely however that you will need to buy some replacement ear pads as they tear easily, I bought mine from eBay and the 3rd party pads seem to be far more durable than the stock ones.

    • Some people replace it with Sennheiser PX200 pads. Apparently it changes how it sounds as well, I don't know since I've never tried it. At least it looks like they are compatible.

"portapro sound muddier" "overall sound is still very muddy compare to my m2"

        What does mud sound like?

        • +4

I think he means bass is boosted, but I personally don't understand either. Or it might mean that he literally dumped it in the mud once and it sounds exactly like that. I personally prefer graphs and just simple "bass is boosted a lot".

As I said, I don't know about the sound change. Only reason I linked it is to show that they are compatible. The pads on PX200s are comfortable, I think… It's been fairly long since I've used PX200.

          Blup Blup

        • +1

I agree. There are a bunch of headphones that sound 'fun' according to reviews. I prefer plain English, too.

        • +3

"Muddy" doesn't just mean that the bass is boosted. Headphones with decent sounding increased bass are described as "dark".

Muddy actually refers (generally) to a low-mid/mid-bass hump, where the low end of the mids is blown out. It makes bass sound less clearly defined, and sorta ruins the mids too.

"Fun" is generally just scooped mids: The same thing the "loudness" button on a stereo does.

        • See? This is why I don't like fancy words. I get them wrong :( I knew it was along bass somewhere, didn't know that it was referring to the mid-bass.

        • @hugs:

So, where do I find the glossary page?

          Thanks for the definitions BTW.

    • Can I get the link to the replacement pads please? Thanks.

      • Search PortaPro replacement pads on ebay, they are on the list.

        • thanks

Hi Guys I have used these headphones for years and they are awesome. Don't get my wrong they look like crap but the sound is amazing. For cost to sound quality there are the best value out there.

    • +1

I'd also recommend KSC-75 by them as well. You can replace the units from PortaPro as well. Just in case the headphone unit breaks down, I used to keep a spare KSC-75.

    • I also have them and love them, little tid bit the design of these is unchanged from the 80's when they first became popular

    • "Don't get my wrong they look like crap"

      Made me lol :p

      • I get my wrong all the time. How to stop worrying and love the PortaPro.

  • Great headphones

  • +1

    Thanks for the heads up.!

The dog destroyed mine about 3 weeks ago… so this is good timing :)

  • Great headphones.… and a lifetime warranty* I have these and a pair of KSC-75

*at this price the warranty probably isn't worth worrying about. Local distributor was willing to do warranty on a pair I bought in Sweden in 2007, but I had to cover shipping to/from so I just bought a new pair.

    • Oh really? I never knew that the local distributors actually honour those warranties… Thanks for the info.

      • +2

the lifetime warranty is great. my SO has a pair that have been returned at least 6 times when the cable cuts out. you have to pay $10 to cover post, but other than that, they repair and return them for free!

  • Can anyone comment on how easy these are to drive? I'm after something to use with tablets/smartphones.

    • They are for portable devices.

I have to say that these are definitely harder to run than most earphones, 62 ohms, but I've never had problems driving it with my old MP3 player. In terms of volume, if I played my earphone at around 5~7, I used 10~12 for this headphone.

I actually preferred this over my earphone though, since my crappy MP3 player had white noise.

Though, it would depend on devices. I think most devices out there are now would be able to drive these with ease, but no guarantees.

      • Thanks for the reply. That's what I don't quite get with these- they are meant to be 'portable' but 62 ohm is higher than most other portable style headphones

        • Probably because the driver was designed with old technology.

    • My experience has been that they are easy to drive for the quality of sound you get. I have a USB DAC that I've used with my Samsung Note 2 and Nexus 7, and in both cases I find the DAC makes little difference to using the PortaPro's direct to the headphone out. YMMV, but I'd suggest at the price they are worth trying. If I'd seen this 24 hours ago when I placed an order with free shipping by Amex, probably would've bought another pair.

  • At this price, the most bargain audio gear I consider that I've bought from over 50 iem/heaphone purchases. These sound damn good with the old school look~

  • +1

I love these, I have two pairs (one at home, one at work), one of them is more than 10 years old, still going strong (had to replace earpad once, and now other needs new earpads now; also had to re-solder the wire on the old one, but that took me 5 mins).

Although sound quality is subjective, I spent some time trying to find an affordable (ie. < $200) closed headphone that sounds as good as this and I'm still looking… I don't consider myself a bass-head and the PortaPros have just the right amount of bass for me, not overpowering at all.

As it is an open headphone, it's not very practical in noisy environments when you need to listen to a dialogue (ie. watching a movie on a noisy bus is nigh impossible). Also, if you like to crank up the volume, your colleague in the next cubicle will hear every guitar riff as it leaks sound. But I think these are minor annoyances when you consider the quality of sound you get.

    RETRIEVAL!

  • Using some now. Such a great pair of phones.

  • Hey Guys,

Just remember when you buy these from Amazon if you want to take part in their lifetime warranty you need to post back to the US which costs you more than the original cost anyway.

I had one or two break on me so decided to pay the exorbitant local price so I could have them replaced under warranty. Have not had to return them locally yet but hope its not a pain.

    Cheers

Have a set of these and they just last for ages.

Note these are not 'closed' type headphones, you will hear everything happening around you. Recommend you don't turn it up when there's a lot of ambient noise as this damanges your hearing.

Good bass response, best used in quiet environments.

  • As a LONG term user of these headphone I can absolutely confirm that they sound incredible for their price. Leaps and bounds ahead of anything even close in price. Downsides are that they leak a little sound, sometimes pull your hair, they look a little goofy and the bag they come in is too small to actually use. Other than that they're always with me.

  • As a former user of these headphones I recommend against getting these. Although the sound is excellent for the price, they look aweful and frequently pull hair which is not just annoying, but painful aswell.

    • They are on my head so I don't have to look at them (I don't have a problem with being "uncool").

I have very long hair (waist long) and most headphones get tangled in it every now and then, for me it's not PortaPro specific issue ;)

The only discomfort I get from these is that the little metal hooks just above the earpads can push on my ear and that can be painful :(

    • I think they look good. It's a retro look. Yes it does pull on your hair though.

    • I personally find their look quite appealing.

    • Shave your head (or just lose it, like me). The hair pulling is something to watch out for.

  • +1

They sound fine, but not sure why these get so much love on ozbargain. Sound pretty much like every other headphone between $10-$30 imo. Plus are flimsy, open, uncomfortable.

    • I think it's decent enough for its price. Also bear in mind, it's really hard to find something this decent, in that price range.

To some extent, at least for me, there is a nostalgia value as well.

not worth waiting three weeks for, unless you know what you're getting i guess

        • It's cheaper than elsewhere at least :D Besides, I am not going to stay at the door for 3 weeks waiting for this. I will probably forget about it, realise that I bought these when they when they arrive. Value you put on these are very personal, so I am excited about these and I think some other people are too. Doesn't mean that the world has to join the fun.

    • Spend $200 or more on headphones and you'll know why these are so loved.

  • It's a very good headphone…I love it..better than some of my $150 ones.

  • i had these but the wires broke easily. Bought the AKG K420 which is cheaper (from COTD for $29) and are just as good sound quality wise and more comfortable. They're both pretty useless on the plane though but that's why you get the Sound Magic E10.

    • Yes being an open headset, I imagine they may not suit some people in noisy environments. However I like the open design so I know what is going on around me.

@roiboi123 how do you find the quality of the wires on the E10's? I've found a lot of that style of headphone to suffer where the cable enters the earplug and they don't last. Your thoughts?

      • I wear glasses so i can only use on-ear or in-ear but prefer on-ear. The E10 cables feel/look like they're braided/reinforced with another wire before the coating is applied. My porta pro's broke at the connection you're talking about. No problems with the E10's. Also due to the generous length you're less likely to tug at the connection when moving, which is also how my porta pros broke on a flight. I highly recommend the E10's though. They're extremely good value and great for watching in-flight movies.

        • Sweet, nice info, will look into the E10's, would be good to find a good inner-ear.

Good point about the lead length on the PortaPro's, I have a headphone cable extension I use when length is an issue, but for anyone buying the PortaPro for the first time it is something to be aware of.

My Sony MDR-7506's have the opposite problem - ridiculously long cord length.

  • I've got this on 11th, I was just curious, has the bag that comes with it changed recently?

My old one was fake leather/artificial leather sort of thing, this one is just a small cloth bag.
