  • Did a bit of research and found on Gizmodo…- actually from Ausdroid ;) Cheers

  • Onix… didn't the tablets they make the last few years turn out to be rather horrible? I recall their 7" tabs weren't too hot and a lot of them sold as refurbs when customers returned them.

    • As with all Aldi electronics, it's from different manufacturers with an Aldi trademark added. So you can't judge 1 model based on previous experiences. But I won't be buying.

    • I had one of the 7" onix tablets and it lasted 8 months . When I tried to get it fixed under warranty, their phone number either didn't get answered or went through to a message bank and messages didn't get returned. In the end, I just threw it in the bin.

      • i had same issue, called many times but every time went to voice message, so took to my local aldi branch and they refund money !

    is it 1,280 x 800?

if its 1,024 x 600 they can die in a fire, same as with Gizmodo who didnt even report this vital bit of info

  • For $99 worth a go. Can always return it.

did a quick search on ozbargain and didn't see it posted anywhere.

    There's a good reason for that…

The price is misleading. its not $99 But $99.99. I have made the mistake of purchasing tablets from Chinese companies twice. I would suggest not to buy this. These things break too pretty fast.

    • thanks, error corrected

      • It's actually $100.49 if paying by credit card, or $100 if paying by cash.

You CAN'T actually buy it for $99.99

        • Pay with your standard debit card? Don't think they charge extra for that… But who uses Savings these days??

        • @zapzap1:

Pay with your standard debit card?

          don't have one…

        • +1

          Using EFPOS it's $99.99.

Plus 60 day no hassles returns.

        • +1

          @zapzap1:
I use a Citibank debit card - handy for free withdrawals overseas, saving quite a lot at the moment. Plus the ING Everyday debit card - still getting me 5% off at other stores with PayWave. Plus it gets me a good 4% in my other account. Why wouldn't you have one of those at no cost?

        • Won't be $100.49 if it's on ING paywave in store. ;)

Edit : pay $1 cash and the rest on the card to bring it under $100.

        • @googleyahoo69:
Never seen PayWave at Aldi. Aldi don't split payments. Can't you just swipe it through as ordinary debit card.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Oh right… my bad… didnt know paywave isn't an option there.

        • -1

          @googleyahoo69:
Don't take my word on that. I haven't shopped there for ages as overseas.

        • +1

@brucefromaustralia: idk which stores you been to but paywave are here in every store in parramatta area in NSW

        • +1

@brucefromaustralia: I've used ING Orange Everyday Visa Paywave with 2% cashback many times at Aldi. Worked out about even after Aldi's Visa surcharge.

        • @alvian:

Haha. So it is possible to get it for under $100.

          Every cents count on ozbargain.

        • +1

@googleyahoo69: Sorry but not for this deal because once Aldi puts on the surcharge the total amount will be over the $99.99 cashback qualification limit imposed by ING. My comment was directed to Bruce who said there's no Paywave at Aldi.

        • +1

          @alvian:

Pay with card n cash. The cash will be for the surcharge amount, and the $99.99 on the card.

Assuming the surcharge is $0.50 as mentioned earlier. Then the amount onto the card will be $99.99. This bring it down to $97.99+0.50 = $98.45

          @brucefromaustralia:

Aldi does split payments cash and 1 card. I always do $99 on paywave and balance cash to get $4.50 net cashback. They cant split between two cards

          This is westfield helensvale qld

        • Mod, Please remove post

        • @brucefromaustralia:Doesn't that 5% return only last 6 months from getting the card?

        • @Spectator:

          I have a 2% ongoing.

        • +2

@brucefromaustralia: paywave everywhere in aldi qld

        • +1

@brucefromaustralia: Yes they do have paywave in melbourne.

        • @jv: I suggest batching it with 3 grapes, so it rounds to $100.. but the grapes are free

        • Sorry, didn't mean to give impression Aldi don't have PayWave, just I haven't noticed it - they do.

When I asked to split payments earlier this year, I was told it was not possible. I was given incorrect advice, or Aldi's systems have changed.
That would be handy for the ING card with 2% rebate, leaving you 1.5% ahead on purchases under $100. On this deal, paying the 50c surcharge in cash will give the maximum rebate on $99.99. (5% rebate ends this month on the last cards issued in June, like mine.)

So thanks for the corrections :-)

"Aldi levies a 0.5 per cent surcharge on all credit card payments, including tap-and-go transactions using a debit card."
ASIC takes Aldi to task for inadequate advice of 0.5% surcharge on credit cards

But having been approached by a consumer electronics supplier to Aldi to provide quality control reviews & advice… I'd be very hesitant to recommend any Aldi electronics.

The poor product reputation, lack of staff knowledge of their products, and lack of technical information on their site is offset by the 60 day return policy. Aldi know many will keep the product, rather than return it.

Products are supplied under the Aldi trademarks from different manufacturers. Poor quality control means products from same carton can vary from DOA to almost good.

Advice is if you must buy, buy more than 1 to get 1 to keep & return rest.

(Of 3 recent PVRs from same batch, 1 was DOA, 1 failed within a week, and the remaining 1 used for review showed such poor firmware design, so all were promptly returned.)

I pay by cash & pay for items individually so my returns are not so easily traceable by management, not that there is anything wrong, just that I sometimes have a high rate of returns. Yes there is a returns form to fill out, but it has never been checked in my experience. But my reviewing days are over. I'll be happy never to use Aldi electronics again.

      • Note that if you pay with debit card but via PayWave instead of inserting/swiping the card, you get charged a card fee, similar to if you pay by credit card.

  • I assume 1GB of ram for this price?

  • lol, true. The charge light is the deal breaker..

  • -1

Just 8 hours till doors open. If I leave now I will be first in queue.
I ain't gonna miss out on this gem!

  • i'm going out on a limb right now and saying that it has 512Mb and is 1,024 x 600

why hide these details unless the details make you look bad?

    • +1

Aldi often leaves out the details we want to know. They are mainly selling to people buying breakfast serial, not the technologically literate.

      • +1

even dummies are savvy enough to ask these questions though…

  • So any definitive answers on screen res?

    • If its anything like the Onix 9" screen from a few weeks ago you will go cross eyed looking at it …so dont really worry about the res..

    • Buy it and check. If you don't like it you can get a refund. For $99 it's worth a gamble.

    • +1

Okay, I've bought one… The screen res is horrible, but is there any way I can figure out what it is, so that I can make sure I don't buy one with similar specs? I'm looking for a cheepish tablet for my 3 year old as the ACER B1-A171 I got for him has had it's screen smashed.

      • take a screenshot within the tablet and check the image properties. that should state the reso. please let us know asap!

        • +3

I downloaded an app called screen specs from the playstore, here are the results:
          Screen Width px: 1024px
          Screen Height px: 552px
          Screen Desnity dpi: 160 dpi
          Screen Desnity: 1.02
          Screen Width dp: 1024dp
          Screen Height dp: 552dp
          Screen Aspect Ratio: 128:69 (Calculated)
          Screen-Size Bucket (Old): mdpi
          Screen Size: Large
          Screen Size Selector: 600

Is 1024 x 600 really supposed to look this horrible? Is there any chance I could tweek the resolution to output a slightly smaller but crisper image? The tablet my son broke was also 1024 x 600 albeit at 7 inches, but I don't think it looked this horrible….

        • +1

          @AG_ACT:

thats for the feedback…. Nah not going to get it.

        • @AG_ACT:

wow its not even hd.. u should defs get ur money back if need be :/

        • @AG_ACT:
Just used that app to check resolution of the $29 Coles 7" Huawei tablet. Exactly the same specs, but looks good. (Of course it is slow, being single core.) So suspect it's not just a resolution issue with this unit's screen.

  • Everyone buying them at my aldi this morning. Stock wont last long.

  • Can anyone report on the screen res?

    • its a bit dubious this information at this point as i expect the hordes have descended onto Aldis like locusts to snap up their shitty tablets… meh to this

  • Expensive door stopper.

  • Anyone having good experience with this device?

    • unless you want to give it to a 5 year old, it's a piece of crap. Spend a bit more and get a device that will last you a few years, hold battery charge and more importantly function the way a tablet should.

    • Probably will be returning it. Performance seems fine, but screen resolution SUCKS (Opinion only, no facts to base that on)

      • Screen is bloody horrible. Put it next to my iPad mini retina and it is truly woeful. I think I'll return it too and get money back. Just about every customer in my aldi was buying these, most of them quite elderly too. Wonder how many will return it..

        • Looking at "typical" purchaser of Aldi electronics like this (from discussions with 1 major supplier to Aldi), they generally do not have prior experience with the type of product and what it is capable of. They rarely use most of the product features.

So with no product to compare it to (like a quality iPad mini retina), customers seem satisfied.

Even when there is a design or technical issue, the inexperienced customer may not realise there is a problem with the product, so is unlikely to return it (except in the case where they realise it is beyond their capabilities to use it). The 60 day return policy gives customers reassurance that it is safe to try what is for them new technology.

In fact there is usually so little feedback that that manufacturer relied on my reviews to develop new models of one type of device for Aldi. I'm not sure I would want to rely on such limited feedback as a manufacturer / distributor. And I would not usually buy the products they sold.

  • Could someone who got one post the more important specs, eg. Bluetooth (what version, if any), sensors?

I'm looking at using it for remote control and the low screen res isn't really a factor.

    TIA

  • I bought the Aldi/Onix 10.1 " this week. I am very happy with it. 10 hr battery life. Screen clarity is very good (many others have complained of previous screens being not so good). I love the 10.1 " for an e-reader. 16 GB internal storage a 512 MB Ram is fine for my needs. I think its the best value 10.1 " android tablet on the market and for $99 I would recommend it. Internet connection is excellent. To me it is the closest thing to an Ipad at 1/3 of the price.
