  • Good deal - I use Backblaze, it's just a pity the software is full of annoyances.

You have to list each folder you don't want to back up and this entails picking them one by one.
You have to back up your System drive even though it doesn't backup the OS by default, (personally I'd rather backup everything except the System drive - that's easy to reinstall).
If you install another drive you have to reinstall Backblaze if you want it to recognise it, this usually means that all the data you've already uploaded is lost, it all needs to be uploaded again.
If you upgrade your computer, everything is lost unless you download it all so you can upload it again.

    • Thanks for that 4wd.. never used backblaze before so thanks for the tips.. Primarily all I want it for is to store 2+ tb of .raw files.. Not really fussed how long it's going to take as I have a server connected 24/7.. for $25/yr, cheap insurance and is much less annoying than a true offsite backup..

      • I'm backing up ~750GB of photos/video/docs, it's been running for ~6 weeks and I've uploaded ~75GB, this is on ADSL1, (max 1Mb/s upload), from my main computer which is only on ~12 hours a day or less.

Just another note, after you install the software and it's detected all your HDDs, you can select HDDs to not backup, (except the System HDD).

Still, it would be a lot better if they allowed you to choose what you wanted to backup, rather than everything you don't want to backup.

At least it made me re-organise my HDDs a bit better :)

        • Wow.. 6 weeks to upload 75gb.. lol..

I have a N54L server with a 12 tb partition on it with various folders.. I'm going to use some sort of trickery so that a folder appears in windows as a hard drive volume..

ie, subst or an ntfs junction link..

  • Now if only it wouldn't take 2.5 years to upload all my data… I have too much data. Or too slow internet. Or both.

  • As a paying customer for both services, Backblaze's app sucks so much that I have switched to Crashplan. I'm on a 100/40 NBN connection and I wanted to back up about 3 TB of data. Backblaze's application limited the upload speed to about 300 KB/s; went through their support channels and they basically said you won't be able to get it any faster than that.

Moved to Crashplan (who also has Australian servers, which I don't believe Backblaze has) and I've been uploading at around 3100 KB/s.

For Australian users, I don't think Backblaze is worth the time and cost unless you've got a slow upload speed to begin with. Just a word of warning!

    • Backblaze uploads faster than 300kb/s since it normally runs anywhere between 700-1000kb/s on my system. And since I have an upstream connection at 1Mb/s that pretty much means it's going flat out.

The only time it's run any slower is when I've been heavily using the internet or I've stopped it.

      • That's interesting, because I never got above around 300kb/s. I even opened a support ticket because my connection speed test to their own servers at https://www.backblaze.com/speedtest/ reported much higher. Essentially, the way their app compresses files into 10 MB chunks before sending it to the server (via a single connection) was resulting in the connection not being able to reach its maximum speed.

        • Sh*t! Ignore me, I missed the part where you're on 100/40Mb, I thought you meant kb and not kB … me stoopid :/
