  • Any price for the i3? Tests show better battery life and barely any difference in performance.

  • +3

Good prices if you can't get the education discount. This lowering of prices gets me excited about the Pro 4 :)

    • +1

Make the Pro 4 without a fan and without needing a fan and they may have something worth getting excited about.

The next generation Intel CPUs may fit the bill.

      • +1

I'm hoping they buck their previous trend and include the type cover with the Surface next time too. Fanless technology does sound very appealing too!

    • Yeah so long as Nadella doesn't kill it along with what's left of the Surface line…and Lumia while he's at it.

  • -6

    Surface price keep declining.
If it goes below 700 then I'll buy one.

  • +2

Waiting for clearance sales on Type Cover 2…come on JB…

  • +1

They should have bundled the type cover with the price, paying separately make the price of the type cover expensive, $149 for a keyboard to me is very expensive.

  • Expired at Hobart JB

    • Whats expired?

      • +2

The resident of Tasmania expired, too old.

      • +1

Sorry I didn't read carefully and I thought it started last Thursday. So I went to JB at Hobart CBD and staff there told me this offer was last week's, and has expired already.

        • +1

Shows how much they know, they weren't on special last week - famous Jbhifi staff talking out of their u know what

  • Can you only get the Education discount through MS store online or can JB Hifi do it too?

    • I've occasionally heard people have successfully price-matched the EDU price at JB/HN.

      • I was just wondering that if JB Hifi officially did Edu discounting they might do this special price plus the 10% edu discount (which I thought might be reimbursed to JB by MS). Long shot but worth checking. So JB don't OFFICIALLY do Edu discounting, correct???

        • Checked with my local JB last weekend, and the manager said that they have no way of authenticating the edu discount from Microsoft.
But as mentioned, people on whirlpool has been successful in getting 10% off, but this is store dependant.

I bought it off MS directly with edu discount and got the $100 voucher which is pretty good. The way they authenticate you is via email account (e.g uq.edu.au, etc)

  • +1

How much do the models come out with the education price? Is it a flat 10% on RRP and does it stack with these promotions?
Also, is a student card sufficient for identification?

    • afaik student discount matching by JB depends on the salesperson/store. I'm guessing they almost certainly won't stack these discounts, but you can always try.

also see reply above by boonjin

  • Has anyone had this upcoming deal actually verified by anyone at JB? I just went to a store in Brisbane and when I asked about the upcoming deal the guy looked very surprised. He told me that he had no idea of any upcoming sale, and that the current catalogues that he has access to don't mention anything about a Surface 3 going on special.

    • Well they can't deny it, the link clearly shows the deal and it starts Thursday so they wouldn't have received the catalogue yet

      • While I'm not denying it's validity; the link is only to a scan of a page of a catalogue with no dates shown. My concern stems from the fact that the staff member wasn't aware of a deal that is apparently only three days away from landing — surely staff are advised further in advance than that? My experience mirrors shungyiu's in Hobart. Could this be a state-specific deal?

        • +1

Nah Jb staff are always hopeless and never know whats going on when it comes to deals, and no Jbhifi catalogues are Nationwide. You do know I was the one who posted it right, so I have the full catalogue in front of me

        • @TRENT86:

Ah, I missed that you were the OP. Thanks for the extra info!

For those asking about the student prices, I've been following the Surface Pros since I got my #1 on clearance at the end of last year. On the Microsoft store site, the education pricing was always independent of any other sale occurring on the main site. Typically, the student price is always cheaper, except for special sales on the main site. i.e. There have been general sales where the regular price (main store) is better than the education price, and the education price doesn't change. There have been several bundles available on the main site that weren't available at education prices. The rare exception that I've noticed is that both the main site and education site have the $100 voucher at the moment. Other users have indicated that this becomes available in the checkout stage and can be applied to a type cover (education price of $135) straight away! $35 for a type cover is a great deal. If you go through cashrewards, you'll get 3% back which covers the extra cost of the type cover if you get either 256GB or 512GB, and almost covers it if you get the 128GB.

From what I've seen so far, this (MS store) is the best way to go, unless you think you're excellent at haggling for extra accessories (and need them) from the JB/HN salespeople in store.

IMO, I don't think the i7's are worth it. I could survive happily with the i5 128GB for my uses. SDXC card can add extra permanent storage, and USB for anything temporary. YMMV

    Hope this helps.

  • Guys, Hardly normal (harvey norman) has prices a couple of dollars lower than this… just check their website.

    Microsoft Surface Pro 3 i5 128GB $1097
    Microsoft Surface Pro 3 i7 256GB $1726

    • We'd rather buy from Jbhifi after HN Treating us like crap

If anyone wants to get the $100 voucher deal at the Microsoft store (mentioned elsewhere above)it expires midnight tonight(AEST?). $100 voucher can be used until 30 June 2015.

    • How do you know that the voucher offer ends tonight? I can't see any expiry information anywhere.

      • +1

        Online chat

        • I took your word for it and ordered just in case. Thanks for the update. Cashrewards is indicating that there's a bundle for Surface Pro 3 that saves $150, but it isn't showing up yet. However, cashrewards was showing the xbox one frenzy bundles before they were live as well. So I'm putting 2 and 2 together and think that they might be switching deals. If I like the new one better, I'll just use the free refund option and get the new deal.

          Thanks for the heads up

the SP3 is the MOST overpriced tablet/laptop this decade! If they had a 50% off sale i would still say they were overpriced!

    • You clearly no nothing about it do you?

      • -1

wow, negs - thats new for me! I stand by the overpriced but then they are free to put whatever price they think thye can get (as does apple) but dam, thies prices dont even inc a keyboard for one thing, next the stylus isnt intergrated, you have to 'stick' it to the side and for an all-in-one (tablet realy) its way overpriced or right priced if it was 2001…

But hey, its your money M$ are ripping off you - maybe they should charge more?

OH thats right this is OZBargin, so i say wait 12 months and get it for half price. Paid $200 for my gen1RT which i love, and i see gen2 are now a LOT cheaper, gen3 are for fools with too much money…. Would prefer to recomend a $300 dicksmith laptop and Ug the ram and HD to a SSD & YES i know its not the same, apple/apple but $300 ver's is 20% of the cost of one of these….

        • +1

I will just put this as example:

Yes, it would've been a lot of money if you bought iPad or any ARM processor tablets unless they could justify the price by being able to be compared to similar priced laptops.

Simply comparing it to an Android tablet or an iPad and saying it is overpriced… that doesn't work. I personally put them under different categories because it can replace your laptop whereas Androids and iPads… well, can they run photoshop? Even if you had the program ported to ARM, would they be able to run them fluently? I am not saying the watered down version of photo editing programs, but I mean the Adobe Photoshop CC.

I am going to bring Macbook Air as an example. It's a solid machine, kinda fits into the category of ultrabook, produced by Apple which produces its own OS etc etc.

Macbook Air 13 inch starts at price of $1199 from the Apple Store, Surface Pro 3, i5 model was $1,209.00 before the price decrease.
Now you'd need to add in extra $150 for the keyboard. So that is $1359 for the Surface Pro 3.

I personally think SP3 stands well. It's lighter and thinner than Macbook Air, it has a pen function (pen comes with the tablet), it can function as a tablet. Even though I'd laugh at people if they told me they use Surface Pro line just like an iPad, having that function is really good (800+ gram approx 3 times the weight that iPads have, being really rough about the numbers). Don't get me wrong, I'd probably be pulling my hairs deciding between these two. This being said, I wouldn't go, people who bought SP3 are just getting ripped off, since I know there are factors that they could've valued more to tip the balance over.

I personally see this as a tablet/laptop hybrid. Yes, it's somewhat gimmicky and yes, it is pricier than laptops and tablets. Yes, it can be cheaper to just grab a tablet and a laptop separately if you go for cheaper ones, but it basically have better spec in a smaller, lighter form, probably better build quality as well against those cheaper ones. Also knowing that ultrabooks had price like $1500, I don't think bringing $300 laptops would be doing SP3 right.

Of course, there is a gimmicky side to this tablet/laptop hybrid but if you look at it from the ultrabook stand point, whether it is "overpriced" or justified in its pricing would depend on how you see the pen and tablet function and other things like weight, which is up to people's perspective. So saying that it's overpriced without looking into those or even mentioning that these factors exist… well yeah, you are going to step on a lot of people's toe there.

        • Bargains mean different things to different people.

Surface Pro 3 replacing my laptop as well as my computer for the home office (with dock)? Big bargain to me :)

    • +1

Sorry, but you said MOST overpriced so that's probably not correct. A quick MS vs Apple comparison:

I just (yesterday) bought a 128GB SP3 with Type Cover for $1088 + $35 (due to $100 voucher) and I should get some cash back. This gets me a tablet/laptop with capability of running "apps" as wells as full windows programs. (Decades worth of windows software available). It has an active digitiser and stylus that work very well, which I will use all the time. It has expansion ports: SDXC, USB3, miniDP etc. I can add a $19 cellular modem. I can double my storage for $60 (SDXC). It really does work like a laptop. It really does work like a tablet.

Compare to 128GB cellular iPad: $1019 + whatever keyboard cover you want ($40 to $100). I have to pay a $160 premium (now we're talking overpriced) for built in cellular, no option for USB modem. Runs plenty of apps, but no full blown programs. No industry standard expansion ports, need lightning adapters. No active digitiser and stylus (but there are fat capacitive ones, yay). No file explorer system (pet peeve). It works like a tablet, just a tablet. So in the end, you save about $100 but have lots less functionality. I know which one I'd call overpriced!

I'm required to have an iPad for work. I hardly use it. Many colleagues are the same. I choose to have a Surface Pro and it's used all the time.

      I have a 128GB Surface Pro 1 and a 64GB iPad 4.
I get real work done as well as browse OzBargain and enjoy playing on the Surface Pro. It cost me about $650.
I browse the web and play plants vs zombies on my iPad. It cost me $600. It was $50 cheaper, but I value the Surface Pro much more than the iPad.

tldr: SP3 is excellent value for money - better than iPad.

      • "I should get some cash back"

        may i ask how?

        • +1

          Yeah, use cashrewards.com.au

Set up account, then log in to that website before you order. Find the microsoft store link on their website. Click "go to store". Complete your purchase on Microsoft.com. They're track your order and give you a cashback once the order is confirmed and return period is over.

        • @Iceman82:

          thanks mate!!

  • MS have now matched this deal. I think JB were aware of the upcoming price change and advertised in advance, whereas MS did the usual and kept quiet until the change.

MS have discounted all but the entry level 64GB. 128GB gets $110 discount, the rest just $100.

Unfortunately, the student prices haven't changed. They're still better than the discounted ones, but the $100 voucher is now gone. I bought mine last night just before the price change, thanks to turbodude's warning. Very grateful.
