Announcements of freeware belong in the forums

    this is not a bargain

This was never a paid app so not a bargain belongs in forums.

  • Was forever free…. not a deal…but a forum post.

Also, I got this for free on Android about a month ago. I don't know why they are saying this is new.

    • The app was released to Samsung Galaxy users first, then to all Android users via HERE.com, and now it's on Google Play store, and more readily accessible!

Thanks for posting. I found it useful to know, and don't frequent the forums so would never have found out that way.

    super good app of navigation

  • Had a bit of a go on it on the laptop. Seems quite good. What are the main advantages over Google Maps? Very similar.

You can only save 50km x 50km with google for offline use. With HERE maps you be completely offline with no internet connection and have the entire countries maps on your phone. Its very good, I use it regularly. I only download the countries as I need them.

The HD navigation voices (separate downloads) are also very good.

I highly recommend it. Theres an article about them below

Been using Here for some time, definitely prefer it as a reliable GPS for car navigation over Google maps.
      - Complete offline use. Don't have to rely on the internet when reception is bad.
      - Glympse is now built-in, quite handy feature when on a trip, you can track your family member's locations.

I will keep an eye out for map updates. Used to love Nokia's map, think it was the best free offline GPS solution out there. I remember it saving me from deep trouble when I got lost near Anglesea in the middle of the night while on a road trip.

      • How is Glympse built in? I'm just going through HERE trying to find out how to enable this function?

        • +2

Tap on the green dot which shows your position, has 3 options, select Glympse.

        • @shadowarrior:

Whoaa!! Even better. Glympse is an awesome app on its own. Cheers!!!

  • Can't open app on N4 running lollipop…

  • Thanks EC for letting us know - should be handy.

  • Android? Offline navigation?… I use NavFree. It's awesome.

Installed it on 2 of our droid phones last night … works well !! :-)
Should be under Deals as it is a true "bargain".

  • Google Play gave me the runaround but eventually inputting "here beta" it conceded that they did have it and I've now installed in my LG G2.
When asked to "Sign Up", what and who are you signing up to? I keep myself pretty private online, prefer to interact with Google only so far as a gmail address.

    • The sign-up is to create a profile and allow for transfer of collections across desktop/devices. I think it is optional, though.

Too slow - I just created an account to post this deal!

(Full disclosure - I work for HERE)

A pity this has been shifted to the forums, I do think this app would really benefit the community, and save many people much $$$!

If interested, there's more info here:

    Cheers

    • Great job on the app mate. You have my kudos and I have been telling all my friends about it. Will there be future support for adding custom POI and custom POI alerts? This will help to import POI for all hospitals, police stations and petrol pumps for example. POI alerts can help tourists use Here as a discovery app along with it's rich navigational functions. The app alerts the user when he is near a listed POI landmark. This function can also be used for creating speed/red camera alerts for drivers.

      Cheers. :)

      • Hey, glad you like it, and spread the word!

Unfortunately I can't comment on specific enhancements, other than to say more is coming :)

  • Is it a big download & can it be installed to mSD?

    Cheers

    • the app itself is around ~40mb. Offline map size varies, but as an indication Australia is ~1gb. Not actually sure if either can be installed to MicroSD, will have to double-check that

      • Yes please. My phone is only 8GB so I have everything I can move to the mSD.

        Ta!

    • Here is a link explaining how to install apps to your SD card:
      http://www.fixedbyvonnie.com/2014/06/install-android-apps-sd…

But it depends what version of Android you are running.

      • Yes, I know how to move what "will" move- some things won't. This app, being 1GB in size, would be one I would only want if it definitely can be loaded to my mSD. The rep never got back with that info???

        • Hey sorry for the delay in response

But yes you can store the maps separately - in Android just go within app to settings > storage memory

  • How does it compare with mapswithme? offline navigation is pretty good.

    https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapswithme…

  • I downloaded and have been trying this for a few days. Great for a free app!

However, I can't get any voice directions, and can't see any settings that have turned it off - is voice available in offline mode? What am I doing wrong?

Also, while the driving directions were good, the on-foot directions were fairly poor ( eg, directions for a 300m walk down the highway were a 2km walk through the backstreets)

    • Hi, I assume you can see a voice (eg English, UK) selected under Settings>Voice Navigation?

If still having problems, we do have an FAQ and contact form available here:
      http://help.here.com/en/android/hereapp#q1768

Finally, with regard to the pedestrian routing - if you can report this place we'll look into it:

(To report a problem with the map, go to here.com on the web, search for the place, select More details and then Report this place.)

      • Thanks Here!

Yes, I have a number of voices downloaded, and have English, UK set as the voice. I've checked the volume, and it seems OK. I assume you don't have to explicitly start the voice separately when you start a route's directions?

I've reported the pedestrian route I had problems with - thanks for that.

        • Hi,

Yep - voice should start automatically when the route starts. If you're still having trouble, send our support team a note here: http://help.here.com/en/contact/ and hopefully they can help!
