    Don't suppose there's any Win7 upgrade included?

Can't see anything on the site

  • -2

tempted to buy it but has an average graphics card.

    http://www.atomicmpc.com.au/Review/137588,gigabyte-hd4650-1g…

Also, is this eligible for Windows 7 upgrade?

    • Great so its noisy and hot and its a HP all the boxes ticked i would say :)

Wouldnt touch it with a bargpole

      • Just having the HP badge on it is enough to make me steer clear.

        • Amen

      • It's a desktop replacement - I hope you didn't expect it to run silently with 10 hour battery life.

It's got brand name components in it - Intel & AMD, how does the HP badge affect the quality of the internals? It comes from a factory where Apple, Dell, Sony, Toshiba, Fujitsu and Lenovo equipment is manufactured. Surely you wouldn't steer away from all of those companies?

I can only guess you've had bad experience with their support, I haven't; on-site, in home warranty anywhere in Australia. I might sound like a mouthpiece for their organisation (I'm not, read any of my previous posts) but I don't understand the problem with HP.

That review does not relate to this graphics card, that is comparing a desktop "Gigabyte" branded card to other vendors of desktop graphics cards.

For benchmarks related to notebook graphics please refer to:

Are these things made of icecream cartons like some other brand does (name starting with 4th letter of the alphabet), some of these companies should take a leaf out from the book of Apple, worth the extra money, cheers

    • "name starting with 4th letter of the alphabet" ..lol..

    • I've used the exact same expression — "ice cream carton" — to describe the build quality on some Dell laptops, too!

I owned a Dell laptop from 2002-2003, and the flimsy plastic case starting cracking and warping after just two years of use — the keyboard became unusable, as some keys wouldn't register unless you pressed down really hard, due to the warped case. It was a disgrace. My next laptop was an Apple PowerBook G4, which is still going strong after 6+ years — my grandmother has been using it for the past couple of years. I haven't looked back since going to a Mac. :)

      • Its probably unfair to single them out, most are guilty of the same problem, just that if you don't want the damn thing to slowly break apart leaving you with nothing more than its skeleton, its good to know there is an alternative.

Unless HP 'HAVE' put in Quality control processes since early 2000, I don't see how they can justify their price and warranty - have a look on the underside of some windows laptops and see if you there are any quality control certifications? you might lucky to see any with some, great looking specs on this one though! 17" display? does anyone know how long the 8-cell will last on this thing?

Personally I'd pay an extra grand and a bit for similar spec Macbook Pro 2nd gen(aluminium body), that can run both OSX and Windows in parallel(software needed) and won't resemble some of those cars that were out from the eastern block! cheers

Yeah…cos Macbooks are so flawless…they never crack or anything. LOL

Not many options these days for quality Windows laptops…

      DELL - rubbish
Acer, Asus, MSI, etc - cheap/rubbish
Lenovo - Really plummeted in build quality since IBM sold up

I still like Toshibas and HPs.

We use HP laptops at work and they are solid.

      Anyway, great price…thanks to OP

      • Have to agree with all of the above, cept the HP stuff. IBM's went to shit 1 year before they sold to Lenovo

Toshiba are okay because they have a very good service centre (yes they have bad days) which is owned and operated by Toshiba and most of the spare parts are in the same warehouse as the service centre

They have good parts normally as the make most of their own parts ie screen hd planar etc

Have used plenty of HP's and havent a good thing to say

I will only look at Thinkpad - T and X series only

    • +1

T was good except the t30 (faulty mem module which took down motherboard on all models)
then there was T40/41/42 which has a faulty Graphics processing unit.

So which T series was good maybe the T20 ?

The x series was the best IBM ever made excluding the 770

    All PC sucks

I Love mac with Linux on it

    • and pay double of that price for a Macbook ?

      • Actually price is very close these days , and i have to say if someone gave me one i would take it , unlike a HP

        • Price very close? Ya reckon?

          • @ShortyX: All things taken into consideration, I agree that a Macbook can be a good choice if you have time and patience to learn a new operating system. I made the jump, but use it mostly for browsing, really enjoy the feel of it - sublime.

            HP/Dell/Asus are learning though.

Take a look at the HP Mini 311, 5101, Probook, the new Envy range (which will be RRP$3499 in Australia…) The Dell Adamo, new Latitude Z. Or Asus UX30.

A well built notebook, with good battery life, comfortable keyboard and generous trackpad is becoming less of a "Luxury" and more of a must.

These guys build and design to fullfill market demand. Macbook's currently have the lions share of the $1000USD+ market, this is what PC manufacturers are trying to capture. Look at the HP Envy - its a almost a clone of a Macbook.

Anyway, about this deal - its all about power here. Its a great price for the specs on offer. Build quality? The HP DV series are in retail stores everywhere, I suggest have a touch and feel at your local JB/DSE tonight, see what you think.

    • Mac with linux?

How well does the touchpad work?

      • I know this is an old comment but if you want to try it out grab a 'Live CD' of your favourite Linux distro.
You simply burn it to a CD/DVD and tell your Mac to boot from the ROM first.
The OS will be loaded into ram and you can use it to test all you like without ever touching the contents of your HDD.

  • OK - COTD updated the spec
Its eligible for Free Windows 7 Update…
But too pricey for me - I rathar update my good old dell inspirion 650M
    (though agreeing with nats/jump22/stix - I hate dell's keyboard/plastic body)

BTW - Did you hear the rumor - Microsoft to launch laptop/desktop!?!?
    ;)

    • I thought it was a Tablet ;)

    • "BTW - Did you hear the rumor - Microsoft to launch laptop/desktop!?!?"

Wonder if I can get it with linux ;P

  • I was going to post this until I realised you can get the same one for a cheaper price on ebay.

  • Sorry if this is a daft question but I've not used Paypal before. As far as I can tell, this is the process but I'd love confirmation…

    1. I pay $1599 today with my credit card through Paypal and there is no additional fee to me.
    2. Paypal credit my credit card with $150 at no fee to me by 31st October.

    Is that right?

    Am I missing something?

Paypal indicates that there may be a fee to get the money back from them and says to go look at the "fees" page but I can't find any detail there so I'm hoping someone can tell me from practical experience?

Edit: This is why I think there's a fee but can't find it…

Question: What are the fees for withdrawing funds from my PayPal account to my local bank account?
Answer: There is no fee to withdraw money to your local bank account as long as the withdrawal amount is above certain minimums that vary by country. See the Fees page on the PayPal website for complete details on the withdrawal fees for your country.

    • At the bottom of the paypal home page where it says "fees".

      • Thanks. I saw that page but there was no country information on it. I think it's safe to assume that since it's on a "com.au" page, that's the Australian fee?

        • So if COTD pay the money from a bank account to my credit card, it will be free for me and them. If COTD pay me from a credit card or debit card, there will be a fee and COTD decides who pays. Correct?

  • Wish it had a SSD - the slowest component is most likely the Hard Drive!

    • putting the SSD in will probably put the price up to $2k xD

  • Damn thats a nice deal - pity I bought the DV6 model a few months ago :(

Nice these 17" models have dual hard drives in them - and as this is still a current model, and is a very nice laptop, its an absolute bargain (mine, the DV6-1143tx was discontinued about a month after its release)!

    • so I guess my old toshiba laptop is worth zilch!

  • sorry about that link to the review! didn't realise it was for desktops.

im tempted to buy this but only need a laptop start of next year really… worth waiting out (for like further price drops) or better off just getting this one?

and yeh, how long can an 8-cell battery last for? (give 'average' usage… so like browsing etc)

    • +2

My advice - you should never buy a laptop in advance of actually needing one.

But if you do need one now, this is a great deal $$/specs wise.

Not really sure about the battery life. I don't imagine portability would be this notebooks strong point though. Its all about grunt here.

  • Thoroughly recommend this lap top.
The Radeon HD4650 is an awesome laptop graphics card. I have this exact same lap but with a quadcore and it runs everything including Prototype sweet. The only thing that it loses points for is that its not a full HD lcd screen. A lot of 17" lap tops nowadays are. HDMI output though so i always just plug it into the big screen and all done.

    5stars

    • I have a 17" Dell with a full-HD screen - never again! I gave up and lowered the resolution (which makes it less sharp since it's not running at its native resolution)…. maybe my eyesight isn't that good anymore, but having to sit my face right up to the screen to be able to see anything wasn't too good!

(and yes, I increased the DPI in windows as well).

  • is the warranty international warranty? and the 2 years extended warranty, is that international warranty as well?
    please clarify.

    thanks

  • No, not international.

    • Is the extended warranty from hp or from third party? Plus if not from hp, can I get refund for the extended warranty because I put order alrdy with extended warranty, please respond asap , thanks
