  • Thanks heaps for this mate, needed this big time and it's easily the best price I've come across!

  • Thanks OP.
    Anyone know when this expires?

    • No but it seems that code "Entertainment15" will last for eternity (hopefully not jinxing it!) - though you only save 15%. They're so cheap but I'm waiting for the catch (like most insurance companies…). I just used them recently but I didn't have to claim. Previously I successfully claimed with SCTI but this turned out so much more valuable on paper (at least with the 20% off code, you could pay extra for no excess and still come out with the best deal!).

The persisting website formatting issues is a bit worrying (are they saving they're money for some reason…).

I spent some time comparing the policy wording of InsureandGo vs Travel Insurance Direct (TID). There were several common scenarios where InsureandGo would not pay a claim, but TID would. I decided to cancel my InsureandGo policy and instead get one with TID for a little more. No point having insurance that won't pay out when you need it. Check the policy wording closely before buying any insurance.

    • +4

      thanks for the info.
what were some of the scenarios that InsureandGo would not pay?

    • +3

Also interested. My eyes glaze over when I read T&Cs so I need someone more patient to read the fineprint.

    • +1

Do you work for the competitor? Either way, at least be more specific.

    • I can second TID too. Had a claim once and the process was straight forward. Another suggestion: pay a little extra and get $0 excess. Just the piece of mind is worth it! They also have a kick ass iPhone app.

    • I've only ever used TID but read that Southern Cross Insurance is a good option too. Has anyone done a comparison between these two?

I go with TID mainly because of the option to reduce excess to $0 by paying a bit more in premium.

      • +4

I'd like to throw my hat in the ring for SCTI. Was mugged in Indonesia last year, not only did they replace everything in my wallet at the time (licence, passport, the lot… Half were waiting for me by the time I got home), they even refunded the $160AUD call to their helpline at 2am!

Can't fault that at all I reckon.

    • There were several common scenarios where InsureandGo would not pay a claim, but TID would.

Care to share with the OZBargain community ?

Insure and Go leave a customer dying in Mexico

It's not a bargain if it fails you when you need it most. This customer of Insure and Go won't get any of the help he needs because they're tricky dogs. This "bargain" really shouldn't be on OzBargain.

    • Thanks for the info - sad story.

      • +1

Oh wow. Thanks for that info. I now feel an almost unfathable urge to make sure this deal is taken off the front page.

    • Ive revoked my vote based on what i just read!

      considered but not honoured…

      Thanks for the warning…

    • +2

Reputation is the key differentiator between the insurance companies. There is no insurance company that will confirm your cover eligibility upon payment of the premium. This is only assessed when you make a claim. So you will never know if you hold a usable insurance cover. However we can get an indication of the company's integrity and honesty by word of mouth/online forums where successful/unsuccessful claims are discussed.

This is the same for all insurance covers be it travel, life, trauma, income protection, car, home & contents, fire, etc.

      • How does this compare to coverage like bupa etc?

    • Given that this is one article, and sure it sucks for the person affected, it highlights that you really need to be careful in buying travel insurance.

While my reaction is that every one will have a story about an insurance scam, by Insurance companies or by claimants, reading past the headline is very important as is reading the PDS.

Like everything in life we are busy and we dont have time to research everything.

If you are resident in a country, then that is the country that your travel is deemed to have commenced, that has nothing to do with citizenship.

The problem with the story is we dont have all the details.

All we have is the family's claim that it is a technicality. And fair reporting isn't what sells newspapers or helps us make informed decisions

      • +2

This is true - but the article was posted nearly 3 weeks ago and is yet to receive a comment from the company… Its all well and good to blame the media for not giving you the whole story, but it appears they attempted to give it to you.

        • +3

Sorry I did find a response from the company which can be found here. It has been widely speculated that the problem is he was travelling Canada at the time, and purchased coverage via I&G's UK website.

Considering Insure&Go operate their own businesses in Australia, Canada AND the UK, I'd call it that pretty weak on their behalf.

        • +1

Look I realise that these companies are no angels, and that the report maybe even fair. But we cant make assumptions like

but it appears they attempted to give it to you

Many media companies wont make retractions even when its proven wrong, or if they do they do it on another page on another day in small print.

          So we dont know.

I am NOT against freakatronic's original comment and I am NOT blaming the media, just pointing out that we just cant make blanket statements based on media reports alone.

and like you said he was traveling in Canada at the time.

Many insurances are not available if you have already commenced your trip. Hence the need to buy it from where you are resident. Unfortunately these conditions are there because others have abused travel insurance.

It's like someone buying insurance for a house when bushfires are present. In those cases insurance companies put in a 24-48 hour waiting period. These are "technicalities".

But again we dont have all the details, which is a pity as we could at least be aware of what technicalities can cause issues.

        • +2

You're right, we don't have the details. But I think you've got where the fault lies with that incorrect.

I did a bit of Googling and I&G were contacted by at least half a dozen media outlets, all of which were declined. What more story do you want if the other side isn't prepared to give it?

I think this is rather silly anyway. While we sit here and squabble over semantics, a poor young Aussie fellow is sitting in an international hospital without the support he and his family believe he deserved. Does the multi-million dollar conglomerate who denied that coverage and then kept their mouths shut about it really deserve our sympathy, yet alone our money?

All of this reeks like the massive discounting that went on after MH17.

    • +1

I don't think this is unique to Insure and Go though. There are horror stories for almost every travel insurance company out there. If you read the PDS closely, there are tons of ways that the insurer can get out of a claim, doesn't matter who the insurer is. Real example - just purchased domestic insurance from Insure and Go to cover rental car insurance over the break. I checked with NRMA first, and they cover 'basic' rental excess. But in the case of a single vehicle accident, Hertz charges their normal excess, plus a single vehicle accident excess. NRMA would only cover the normal excess, so you might have $3000 of coverage from them, but would only pay out $1100 leaving you with a >$2000 bill. In contrast, Insure and Go says they cover all rental excess. This sort of thing is standard practice and you really do need to read the PDS carefully. But I almost guarantee you'll find sad stories like this one for whichever insurer you choose.

For a longer term (and free) solution, a lot of credit cards nowadays have complimentary international travel included (interstate insurance a bit more rare).

Pro: Its free, and the CC may be free too (just wait for one of those $0 for life offers).

Con: You'll need to buy at least the plane tickets with the card, and there's usually an excess of ~$100-$200 if you make a claim.

Make sure to file a police report if a crime happens to you, the claims process via the CC travel insurance is pretty straight forward if you provide one.

Source: I had a wallet stolen from me in Europe, filed a police report in France, and Zurich Insurance (via my Citibank CC) paid me $500 minus $200 excess 2 weeks after I came home.

    • That's travel insurance not health insurance ie booking flights, luggage, connections etc.
Source? Maybe if you could give us a link if you actually mean comprehensive health and travel?

      • I think he was referring to things like this - this offering from Westpac for example - its no longer available, though every bank/CU has something similar.

        • Ok, cool. Will read more into this. Thanks jackary, useful to know.

  • I'm going skiing in Japan; would that be covered in the insurance?

    • +2

Read the PDS for greater certainty/clarification.

    • i'm going to go with TID just in case - when you going? im going in feb lol

Remember, price isn't everything when it could possibly be your life on the line. As others have said, Travel Insurance Direct is great value for the coverage it gives you, and after reading that new story posted here about this company I would never go with them. Also I highly recommend lowering the excess to $0, as that could change a decision to go see a doctor or not and potentially save your life.

Very bad reviews for InsureandGo on TripAdvisor as well http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/ShowTopic-g294226-i7220-k60212…

Seems like they try to avoid paying at all costs.

  • I'll issue the OP with free travel insurance with an excess of $1mil for any claim

who actually buys travel insurance? wtf….

    • some people need to, anyone with a per-existing medical condition, will not be covered by any insurance (credit card etc). They need to add their condition to the covered list of a travel insurance policy(at an additional premium).

    • +5

There are people that don't?? Wtf…

As a frequent budget backpacker I know you may be serious since I meet a lot of backpackers that skip it. Depending on where you get injured and how suited you are to air travel with your injury you could find out a few thousand dollars won't cut it. Based on firsthand experience it's not only insurance companies that could be downright pricks in the face of an emergency. There are countries where serious accidents and illnesses are commonplace and you'll experience apathetic responses to even your emergency telecommunications and transportation needs (where insurance still fails us) - let alone medical care. As a lone traveller I'd highly suggest making other tourist friends who could get you to the stage where you can claim insurance.

  • +2

I urge everyone to read and understand your pds before you buy travel insurance, after all your pds is the contract that you're buying.

Most complaints come from people claiming shit that isn't covered, in which case every insurance company will reject your claim.

I've had good experience with the Australia post insurance. I made a small claim when I came back from my trip and it was paid out in a timely manner. My friend had to use them for a bunch of things on his trip, including hospitalization and theft, and also had no problems. So I'd happily recommend them now and will probably use them next time.

  • "90 leisure and sport activities automatically covered for FREE"

they cover skateboarding, as long as you're not doing tricks.

they should just change their PDS to say "we'll pay you … maybe … if you fight us for long enough and we feel like it … but probably not"

  • at least this one cover pregnancy with no excessive surcharge. TID is only good if you travel to a first world country and stay in the resort the entire time, if anyone cares to read their T&C, they single out almost anything considered 'risky'.

  • +1

I actually think some commenters here need to look at the issue of Insure and Go objectively. If you carefully read the PDS: http://www.insureandgo.com.au/downloads/IG_MS_PW_OT.pdf you can make a pretty informed decision. Depending on the level of cover required (i.e 2 week hardcore skiing holiday in Japan with your mates Vs. a single person visiting relatives in NZ) this 'contract', with 20% off + 7% cashback might be worth it. Im giving the deal a + because it suits MY needs and I will read the PDS.

    • +2

Yeah I understand the ozbargain mentality. I really do. I have a whole drawer of unopened eneloops.

But for gods sakes, you're going overseas, to have what for most is meant to be a joyous occasion. Is it really worth the saving of dollars and cents? How many more examples of bad service do you want? This thread, Product Review, and even the news is littered with this.

Eventually one needs to question the motives of the company, rather than just accusing each and every wronged customer of being a moron.

      • -4

Nice speech. So which travel insurer would be so much better in your opinion then?

        • +4

No need to be like that. I actually recommended SCTI above if you bothered to read the comments. I didn't make a recommendation alongside my comments because you could bet your bottom dollar that someone like you no doubt would be back to tell me I'm employed by said company.

I agree that all insurance is buyer beware. I'm not disputing that. It would be foolish not to read the PDS. But the quality of coverage, and customer service or lack thereof provided by I&G as demonstrated here, in reviews, in the media, and in comparison to other insurance companies is irrefutable. It's pretty simple really. If its too good to be true, it probably is.
Others have pointed out some rather bizarre exclusions, so one could only conclude those exclusions are where the savings are being made. They are a business.

        • -3

@jackary: No need to be like that either. We are all trying to get the best value here and the rating agency canstar lists I&G as well as SCTI. So one can only wonder if SCTI is really better than I&G then, no?

        • +3

@eichi: Um.. What? The resounding opinion seems to be are that I&G are no good. I've cited a few references. So no, one doesn't really need to wonder…

I'm not sure how Canstar comes into all of this. The Financial Planning section of CBA also have a Canstar rating, though I'm not sure many investors would go near them with a ten foot pole.

I'd really like to leave this here because I fear we aren't actually furthering this discussion at all.

Firstly, this code is from an Entertainment Books or the Frequent Values reward program. The type of company that Insure and Go are, I would probably say that if you made a claim with them and didn't have the Entertainment Book or weren't a member of Frequent Values, you can kiss your cover goodbye.

Secondly, Insure and Go are a joke of an insurance company. Long story short, we were traveling in New Zealand with the top, 'Gold Level' cover, one of our flights got cancelled, we called them up and were told that we would get $200 for every 12 hours we were delayed. When we got back to Australia and put in a claim they said we weren't covered for that, even though we had the top level cover and their customer service told us we were.

    • you say "one of our flights …"

The simple info says only the main return from/to flight back to Australia is covered, so if it wasn't that flight, it's not covered.

      • I admit, I wasn't one to read the fine print of my policies (I am now though). The point is that when our flight was cancelled, we called their hotline and told them EXACTLY what had happened to see if we were covered, and I was told (in broken English) that we were covered for $200 every 12 hours.

        • this is the unfortunate scenario for everyone these days when you simply ring for info. It's never going to be over until the fat lady sings and she only sings in the fine print

  • Well I bought the insurance for my holiday to Malaysia in february but im starting to doubt what I have purchased.

Reading the PDS, there are alot of exclusions and it seems like very situation based….

Car rental excess cover will only cover you if you take out the collision waver and third party insurance through the rental company itself!

So you have to read the PDS and make sure you fit their specific scenario before they pay you.

Is it possible to cancel this?

    • +3

      From FAQ:

All InsureandGo Australia policies include a 14 day cooling off period. If you contact us within 14 days of purchasing this insurance then you are entitled to a full refund providing that you have not claimed on the policy or commenced your trip. To cancel the insurance please call 1300 401 177 or email [email protected]

    • Check the alternative travel insurance before you cancel though. Rental cars are pretty tricky. In Australia, almost all car rentals come with a collision waiver and third party insurance as standard. Whereas overseas e.g. USA, there isn't any by default. That is, if you just rent a car in the USA and crash it, there won't be any excess, you'll just be charged the full damage costs. I don't know offhand of any Australian travel insurance that will cover this. NRMA insurance only covers the 'basic' excess, which means that they might not cover the full excess cost if you have, say, a single vehicle accident, and this is billed as two different excesses (Hertz does this). Insure and Go has a maximum rental length, so they won't cover you if your rental lasts longer than some duration. I would suggest calling the insurer and asking them about your situation specifically.

For overseas travel though, Southern Cross Travel Insurance is generally considered quite good

  • +2

Like everybody else, I have had some bad experiences with travel insurance providers, including a couple of the "majors" from whom I might have expected a more ethical approach. So on our early-2014 trip we decided to give the big ones a miss, and just go with an on- line cheapie. It happened to be InsureandGo, and we happened to have a lARGE claim ( nearly a thousand dollars) for which we had almost no documentation… Just a sad story involving a suicide. I was so sure they would tear up the claim that for two months I didn't even bother to put in a claim. Finally I got around to it… And they paid up, in full, without any argument or asking for better documentation. This is the only good experience I have ever had with an insurance company, and I am a fan. Don't write them off too quickly.
