    • I generally get @ 5-7% worse fuel economy (and rougher running engine) when I fill up at Caltex compared to Shell. Might be just my car though…..

    • BP, Caltex and Shell fuel all comes from the same place in WA.
Cant be sure in other states.

BP is seperate to Ctx and Shell (BP has its own refinery, ctx/shell share an import terminal) in Perth. You also have Caltex import terminals in Port Hedland and in Karratha.

The thing is, fuel these days can come from any number of terminals, just because it has Shell signage on the servo doesnt mean its fuel made by shell (or should i say viva energy)

91% of all fuel in Australia is imported, the bulk of that 91% is from Singapore/India, with some coming from Korea as well.

So to say one brand is better then another is just misguided idiocy, or that they actually believe advertising.

I cart fuel for all 3 major players, along with many smaller operators, and all fuel being loaded and being sold meets the 2001 Fuel standards act.

Your best method of reducing your risk of getting a load of water or contaminates is to fuel up from busy servo's/newer sites with the new VR2 bowsers, these sites typically go through tens/hundreds of thousands/millions of L a day. We service sites that their average use is north of 500,000L of product per day (which is around 9 25m b-double loads) but thats a drop in the bucket compared to many business sites (1 particular site we do is closing in on 2million of diesel consumed per 24 hours, 5 trucks 6 loads per shift just to keep up with demand for that one customer)

Some terminals in capital cities will move 100+ million L per week, with peak well exceeding that.

It really is mind boggling on how much petroleum we as a nation uses, and yet we are small fry compared to many other countries.

Here is the gate price for each state, this includes the fuel excise (47.6c/L) and GST (10%) so many servo's (especially Sydney) are selling at cost/below cost (not including transportation cost)

        http://www.aip.com.au/pricing/tgp/

        • If they are selling at or below cost, how can they be making money?

Somewhere along the line 10 years ago it was 1mil to start one up including land costs in western Sydney where land is cheaper. That's a lot to cover in overdraft if your not making money off the petrol.

          @wholesaleturbos:

Many places are because of the fierce competition. It's all about shopfront sales, the fuel portion is to get people in the door.

That's not to say they aren't always loosing money on fuel, just currently given the current gate price vs Sydney's average price.

It's a bit more complex then that but gotta be broad because of NDA's

        • Good info Copie

        • @cristobaljames:

I'm happy to answer any questions, but need to be generalised, due to NDA/security restrictions

        • @Copie: Understandable, I work in that field which is how I learnt that the fuel was coming from the same depot.

  • Recommendations on what to buy from the Caltex/Woolworths store that's not a complete rip-off?

I always get milk for $1 per litre, but make sure it is the Woolies branded one not Dairy Farmers.

      That said… 10 litres of milk is a lot…

    • Buy some Milk.
If they have a deal on, get Barrister Bros Iced Coffees, they have an expiry date of Jun 15 :/
      Someone also mentioned phone recharge

      • Barrister Bros

I love the idea of lawyers opening a milkbar because they're a bit short on cash… :)

  • Anybody know where in SA would be a servo selling milk for $2 a litre? I've been to one wayy up south that does it, but I live around Tea Tree Gully.

    • Do you mean $1 a litre? The one on Salisbury Hwy, Mawson Lakes does.

It must be the ozbargain way to fill up their car and buy lots of milk

    • pretty much my plan

  • I can't read the fine print on the jpeg - can anybody tell me when this expires?

  • +1

Can you buy boost mobile recharge? I know at coles that wont count towards it

    • Telstra recharges count so I assume boost and all mobile recharges do.

  • Well, 3 bottles of milk do not satisfy my anymore, 5 bottles to go next time.

  • LPG prices isn't tied to unleaded prices is it? So if prices keeps falling, the advantage of an LPG car would be close to none, no?

    • dream on!

if the price of petrol could fall to LPG or closer to LPG……if only we dream….. :-p

    • +1

LPG prices are dropping too. Not long ago it was about 90 cents per litre. Now it is around 60 cents per litre.

Woolworth Fuel app is great. I find an 11c difference at their servos around me. 99c for e10 being the cheapest at the moment.

  • +1

Anyone know the price of a drumstick there?

Could be useful to combine with https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/174596

  • I really did expect to see Woolies chuck up the petrol prices with this 14c/l discount, but the price keeps dropping!!! Petrol is now down to what, 1990's prices? With the 14c/l discount, petrol in my area (Campbelltown NSW) is now down to 89.9c a litre!!! Petrol is cheaper than milk!
    Anyone got a better price?

    • +1

      99.9 at my local Woolies servo - 14c/L = 85.9

      85.9 - 7.5% through groupon Big W gift cards = 79.45c/L!!!!

Wow when I was calculating that I didn't expect it to be anywhere near that low. Incredible…

  • +3

If you want to make the most of it, first buy Woolies gift card at 5% discount via RACWA/EntertainmentBook/etc. Use the card to pay at the till. That makes a total of 20 cents off.

  • Is this likely to be extended?

    • Is this likely to be extended?

It's actually very likely to cost Woolworths a lot of money. Apparently the ACCC has filed a lawsuit against Caltex/Woolworths servos for breaching the 4c/L rule illegally.

      • Why can't they just lower the price and make it unbeatable to independent servos?

      • Caltex/Woolwors have more money to spend on lawyers than the ACCC. They'll win.
