thanks OP, picking one up after work

    • See the monitor most days at work, can confirm. Looks amazing.

Bought one off ebay earlier this year. 4k is amazing.

One word of caution, some of them suffer from not being able to wake up properly when your computer goes to sleep/hibernate via display port to 4k. You have to do a full power cycle to get it going again. (google it and you'll find that it is a common problem with these).

I dont think i experienced the issue with HDMI but you really need to use display port to get the most of out it.

I had to take mine to get repaired under warranty.

N00b question. Why is display port better for these?

      • +1

Bandwidth and compatibility will probably be a bit better with DP than HDMI for your existing graphics card (unless it's a brand new one). Up until version 1.something most graphics cards and monitor combo's only supported a maximum res of 1080/1200p via HDMI.

Actually I wish I had asked this question before I bought my monitor. It's actually a little complicated and there is a lot of confusion out there. It took me a few days to work out that i needed new hardware to run 4k PROPERLY.

The general gist of the matter is that most (all?) current 4k monitors either run at 60hz or 30hz depending on BOTH your video card AND the method of connection. (Some 4k monitors ONLY run at 30hz)

So ideally you want a video card that is capable of the 4k resolution and connect to your monitor via display port which will give you 4k@60hz.

While you CAN connect a capable video card via HDMI, it will only run 4k@30hz - The difference is significant even when just moving a mouse pointer on the desktop.

Some 4k monitors 'cheat' by actually putting two panels together to form a single monitor, so that you can connect via 2 HDMI inputs to achieve 60hz. Your computer is just driving two displays but to your eyes it's a single image. (Pretty much like having dual monitor displays). This is definitely a band-aid solution and something you probably want to avoid.

        • Thanks for the info guys.

    Welcome to 20fps gaming.

Dell 34" ultrawide curved monitor available soon…keen on it to replace my two 24" Dells.

  • yeah I bought the philips 4k monitor a month or so back. Few notable things - you must use display port (higher bandwidth), make sure you use a cable with 1.2 standard for 60hz. You wont get 60hz any other way - trust me you want 60hz. Make sure you get a quality cable as well. I have no issues with sleep any more since buying a 1.2 cable. Had to splash out on an sli graphics set up as well to run comfortably Max settings - otherwise you'll need at least a single 980gtx or r9 290x. Also unless you have eyes with microscopic capabilities you will need to scale under appearance and settings in windows :)

    • what sli setup you running and what games are you playing?

just so i go in with an expection, right now im using DSR to get a rough idea.

      • Hey bud check out this to get an idea of a single card fares with games such as battlefield 4, crysis 3, metro and tombraider : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6y_GEvObFRQ

and then read this to get an idea of the same games with sli (almost double the frames in some cases!) - http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_970_SL… or http://www.hardocp.com/article/2014/11/19/nvidia_geforce_gtx…

Currently i'm playing Mass effect 3 (which actually runs fine on a single gtx 970) but i'll be keen to fire up farcry 4 on it soon. Also thinking of getting Ryse just to see the amazingness for my eyes! may have to replay Wolfenstein too now - agh i need more time!

My gf plays Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn and that struggled on a single 970 struggled with 4k, so i really recommend 2 if you can (this is for max/ultra/high settings of course).

        Another good informative vid:

        • i've read and watched a lot of review. ive tested the game out (got the monitor) and it runs shadow of mordor at around 32-44fps (dual 970s) with no oc. i think my drivers are stuffing up and i might need to do a fresh install as it does not watch to run my oc now.

let me know how you go with fc4, be good to get a few REAL fps benchmarks. the game feels REALLY smooth on 4k at lower fps compared to 1080p

        • Yeah try a fresh install - I'm running win 7, 2 evga 970s (shroud/closed design so they don't cook) an i5 4460 and 8gb ram. Runs off a 750 watt gold psu no struggle. I'm running the latest drivers from nivida's site - everything good so far :)

I remember the first time i tried out dual GPU - 2x 5770 crossfire when skyrim came out and it was horrible - could just be ati but fresh install and 3 different drivers still wasn't any good. I had vowed to never do a dual gfx setup again but i guess that changed :P

I might have to check out nuuvem see if i can get shadow of mordor cheap so can compare and test it out!

  • When does this sale end?

    • they are on special for $499 till next Mon

    Samsung 28" UHD monitor = $484.
Geforce 970 GTX = ~same price as above.
Finding out you only get 30fps after spending $1000 = priceless.

  • Is this likely to be a worthy improvement over a 26" Acer 16:10 1920x1200 my brother gave me about 6 or so years ago (which still rocks) ?

No real gaming is expected to be done.

I've been passing on the Dell 27" deals to date.

    Thanks.

    UHD590 $459 with code BTS40

  • Saw one in the shops yesterday. Imiages on it looked better than other 27" monitors around it, but it is a TN screen and I prefer IPS.

    Still a very nice monitor.
