      is 1.2A enough for reliable operation of a pi ?

        1.2A would be fine for most. I run my Model B on a 1000mA charger, perfectly stable with keyboard mouse network and hdmi plugged in. Depends on your peripherals I guess i.e I wouldn't run a portable hdd off it.
