Where Do You Go to Buy Your Furniture When Moving into a New House?

Hi guys,

Just wondering where do you go to buy your furniture when you move into a new house?

I want to know factory outlets or stores that you think are worthy and cheap. I'll need things like a bed and mattress, sofa, rugs, bedding linen, washing machine ne/dryer, etc.

What factory outlets are out there (for example: I bought a microwave from a Panasonic factory outlet called panatec). I need it to be in Sydney.. Western Sydney is even better as this is where the new house will be built.

I'm not after used items either.. So please don't suggest Gumtree unless Gumtree has factory outlet items listed.

Thank you :-)

  • I assume you want cheap? If so, try Kmart, Fantastic Furniture, Target..

  • I find Ikea good value for money. I love the simplicity in their designs. For smaller household items, bigW, Kmart, Target..

From memory, Hardly normal has a factory outlet on parramatta rd, its worth having a drive around there because there could be other factory outlets too, if you really want to find factory outlets. Mind you factory outlet is just a misleading term to lure customers in, beside the occasional bargains, prices wont be that much different from stores. Its like auctions in the real estates.

I always go the ikea or cheap options. after 5-10 years it'd be a likely scenario to upgrade or move furniture, and the cheap stuff lasts about that long. Its easier to part with by throwing out than resell. My parents have a lot of old furniture that is beautiful, yet heavy and unwanted. Its difficult to sell as no one wants it.

Bed and sofa are the only two you'll need to look out for, and try and find a great buy first go.

    Op-shops> ALWAYS.

May take a few visits, but you get to know which has furniture, which electronics, etc.

    I last bought a $250 juicer at Salvo's for $10.

    Otherwise, Gumtree.com.au

    Good luck

    • Very much agree with this. There is no reason to buy cheap new crap when plenty of people are getting rid of perfectly good stuff 2nd hand. The benefit of op shops is that they are usually charity based so you're helping people too!

  • Worthy and cheap are often diametrically opposed. If you want cheap gumtree is the answer., while worthy is in the eye of the beholder.

Why not go gumtree for generic items like tables and chairs, whitegoods, sideboards, outdoor setting etc. the savings here may allow you to get new more expensive items that are more personal like beds and couches.

Other than that, try to win lotto. That way you can do away with cheap, and focus on worthy

    • Agreed.
Very high quality furniture is available 2nd hand on gumtree for less than the new junk from Fantastic etc.
You can often find people moving overseas etc. off-loading a whole house of stuff for peanuts.

  • Furnished a two bedroom apartment for about $1000 with eBay and Gumtree. Including bed, fridge, washer, lounge, microwave and dining suite. Still using all these items 2.5 years later.

  • I second IKEA. That's your starting point for furniture. I'd also suggest you get there at opening time. It gets feral at peak times.

I second Gumtree, especially when you don't rush. I much prefer quality secondhand stuff than poor quality new stuff. Over the years I have had lots of luck with Gumtree. Try the affluent suburbs.

  • I bought my new mattress from Myer when it was 40% off. Got Myer One points too.

Towels and Sheets from Sheridan Outlet in DFO Homebush. Pillows too. Actually, you can get a lot of homeware/Kitchenware at DFO.

Microwave you can get one from Big W cheap.

For bigger items such as a dining table and couch, you should go to Megamall or Domayne and buy floor stock on clearance to save money and get it for at least half price.

The Good Guys for a fridge and washing machine. Pay less for cash.

  • Thanks for all the suggestions guys! So sorry for the delayed response!

So, we've been looking around and have found Super Amart to be cheaper than Fantastic and Ikea (we think). We have found a nice looking lounge from them http://www.superamart.com.au/conrad-49971/

We also were looking around at Prospect homebase and found some outlet store (i can't remember what it's called.. "Brand Outlet" or something) that was closing down due to end of lease. So they have 40% off store wide off their already reduced prices. They had some furniture and home wares from freedom furniture and other brand names. We bought only home wares, but there were some bargains to be had, especially in the furniture/outdoor furniture department.

We are still looking for a mattress and bed/ensemble.. preferably king size. We have checked out The Sleeping Giant (they seem to have a decent mattress made by them - if anyone has any info on it, let me know). We have also checked out Beds R Us. All the others seem too expensive. I definitely don't want to be looking at second hand beds/mattresses.

So, if anyone knows where i might be able to find a store that's having a closing down sale due to end of lease or another reason, please let me know.. as this might also help with further bargains! :-)

  • Bed has now been bought from Beds R Us.. was 40-50% off. Have also bought a tv unit.

Now we are still needing a:
    *TV (preferably 60")
*Fridge (possibly LG - open to suggestions/bargains though)
*Washing Machine (probably 8kg and above) - not sure on whether we definitely want front loader or top loader
I'm hoping to maybe purchase those big items at the one store to save on delivery. If i don't, it doesn't bother me too much
    *Rug
    *Bed Linen

    • As already suggested, keep an eye on Sheridan Outlet for linen. Although their regular prices seem high compared to some others, they are ALWAYS having a sale (you can subscribe to their emails) and the quality is far superior to what you will get for the same money as their sale prices.

For instance, we picked up Fraser Egyptian cotton king towels for around $12, and at the same time they were advertising their Hue range of towels in King size for 10. I've seen all bath mats $7.50, when the regular price on some is up to $29.

  • I bought my couches, dining table and similar furniture items off Gumtree. 10x cheaper than buying it new, and I got really good quality pieces that I would never have been able to afford at retail prices. I got beautiful and nearly new leather couches (and quality fullgrain leather, not the crap sold at Super Amart etc)for $700 for a 3 seater and 2 seater. Would have cost over $3000 new for the brand.

Linen etc I waited for good sales at Target and stores like that.

Bed frames can be bought cheaply second hand, I bought my mattress new because I don't like the idea of a second hand mattress.

I got all of my electrical items (washing machine, dryer, fridge etc) from one big electrical store so they did a better deal and I suppose I would have saved on delivery too.

  • How about auction? http://www.bidbuysold.com.au/

  • I moved out of home last year and bought all my furniture from op shops.

  • With the new furniture, if u decide to move again, its really hard to sell it. Noone wants to buy.
when we moved to Sydney, almost all furniture we bought new. When decided to move interstate, could not sell it or had to sell very cheap. We had second hand items as well which we sold. And returned money spent on it. But not with the new one.
after this experience - only second hand furniture in very good condition.

  • Just an update:

Managed to negotiate this fridge https://www.jbhifi.com.au/whitegoods-appliances/fridges-free… to $2000 with free delivery. It also had an LG $150 cashback offer. So total $1850.

Managed to get this LG 60" TV http://www.dicksmith.com.au/tvs/lg-60-152cm-full-high-defini…, this LG wireless soundbar https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/soundbars/lg…, this Belkin 8 way surge protector https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/tv-accessori…, this TV Bracket https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/tv-accessori…, this optical cable https://www.jbhifi.com.au/tv-home-entertainment/tv-accessori…, and 5 yrs warranty for $1500 packaged. My partner also works for woolworths Ltd who had 10% off for purchases at woolworths on Saturday, so bought some JB HI FI gift cards from woolies at 10% off. Total price paid was about $1375 after some discounts from some gift cards.

Just need a top loader washing machine and vacuum now. Still needing suggestions for these ones! Thanks :-)
