But is it worth it ???

    • +5

I think so, I now only use uber and found them much better than local taxis.

      • -5

Not worth the risk with all the unaccredited drivers they still have…

        • No clue JV

      • +1

        Same

    • +4
      • -2

The risk is much higher when unaccredited drivers are being used…

      • +3

        apparently it does

        • Maybe I should have used sarcasm tags, as that was exactly my point if you look at what I linked to.

          Oh look, another one!

  • Isnt Uber officially illegal in Australia?

    • -1

unaccredited drivers and vehicles are illegal…

      • "use the Service to upload, transmit or otherwise distribute any content that is unlawful, defamatory, harassing, abusive, fraudulent, obscene, contains viruses, or is otherwise objectionable as reasonably determined by OzBargain"… hmmm…

      • +1

        vehicles are illegal

        They're driving unregistered vehicles!

I think you mean to say the vehicles aren't registered taxis. ;)

        • and not insured for carrying paying passengers.

    • +1

      also, they're not always cheap… Even with $25 off…

    • uber X isnt

    • is the service illegal or driver with no license?

  • -1

    illegal

  • +3

I now only use Uber, they are so much better than normal cabs. Cheaper, drivers are held accountable and you have a record of your journey emailed each time.

  • UberBlack, UberLux and UberTaxi are all still perfectly legal and legit.

Love Uber, very much appreciated getting a drive home at 1am on New Years day even with the 3x surge pricing (which they were upfront about)

    • +1

Yep surge pricing is an excellent idea.
What's better- an expensive ride home or NO ride home?

  • +2

I've used uberx twice (once in perth, once in melb).
Both times around 15% cheaper than a cab (no discounts used).
Way more convenient than trying to find or call a cab too.
Not to mention safer for driver and passenger in my opinion.

Drivers aren't soft targets because they don't carry cash… and passengers are assured of good service due to the feedback system (like ebay- im not gonna deal with someone with suss feedback).
    What's not to like?

    • The fact that the drivers may not have appropriate insurance for if there is an accident while you're in the car…?

(I like the idea of Uber, and a lot of the implementation details, but it is a company that has decided it can ignore the law and so is running a bunch of unlicenced taxis with unaccredited drivers).

(Edit: I should point out that the extent to which they are using unaccredited drivers varies by state. In QLD and WA I have heard they require drivers to have the appropriate licence extensions to be hire-car drivers)

      • All valid points and the insurance side of things is still a very grey area worldwide.

The whole unaccredited taxi driver thing isn't an issue though when you look at:
the checks and traceability requirements uber has in place
        vs.
the checks and traceability involved in becoming an accredited taxi driver.
If anything, as a passenger I'm more comfortable with the driver accountability system uber has than with the taxi system.

Lots of 'accredited' taxi drivers doing things like playing funny buggers with meters and sharing/not displaying their accreditation credentials.
Not to mention the state of the cabs- lots of neglected, dirty, unsafe/unroadworthy cabs out there.

The beauty of the uber feedback system is it's in the drivers best interests to keep the car clean and safe… or else their feedback drops and they lose fares.

  • It's saying the promo code 'OZTIX' has reached it's max redemptions, is there any other codes? Was hoping to maybe use Uber tonight (For the first time too). Thanks.

    • same here - looks like its done.
