30

Link to the white one

Basically the BenQ F5 with a Kogan logo stuck on it, please note that this 4G+ is actually an improved version. (2GB of RAM and 13MP camera, compared to 1GB and 8MP)

Battery 2520mAh Li-Ion
CPU Snapdragon 400
GPU Adreno 305
OS Android 4.4
RAM 2GB
ROM 16GB
Card Slot Micro SD, up to 64GB
Resolution 720 x 1280
Size 5.0"

Saw the 2nd gen MotoG deal so decided to post this, this phone has better specs with the same price tag. BenQ is a pretty good brand too (no comment on Kogan itself though).

As it's essentially a Taiwanese brand, more reviews and unboxings can be found on TW websites, you'll need Google translate if you can't read T-Chinese: Here, here, and here

  • Dual Sim? Probably never get a lollipop upgrade eh

    • -1

tbh lollipop upgrade not that important. old android versions very useable

    • Unfortunately no dual-sim, and not sure about lollipop and whether updates are handled by BenQ or Kogan.

  • Nice specs other than a low res display.
No 2100 for 4g, so not much good for Telstra?

    • +2

      TIL 720p is low res.

      Also Telstra is 700/900/1800/2600. Doesn't use 2100.

      • +1

Not sure why you were negged, as what you said was true.
Telstra 4G is mainly 1800, not 2100 (2100 is Optus 3G in Aus btw).

        and 720p isn't really low res… qHD (960x540) and WVGA (800×480) are.

      • I have very good close up eyesight, and I have problems telling apart the 5" 720p Moto G and my 5.2" 1080p Xperia Z2. 720p looks great with an RGB matrix :)

        • I wear glasses for distance only and i CAN tell the differance between 720p and 1080p

        • @holden93: I can tell them apart, but not by much. Are you talking about like a Galaxy S3 screen? Cause that uses 720p pentile, which is about equivalent to 540x960 'normal' or RGB.

        • @deanylev: s3,one XL,one X, LG optimus g
those are all the 720p screen phones ive had.
now for 1080p screen phones ive owned/own
          nexus 5, galaxy s4, HTC one M8

Can 100% tell the difference between 720p and 1080p

          @holden93:

There's definitely a difference between 720p and 1080p screens, I can easily tell the difference. But I thought the discussion here was whether 720p was low res?

        • @clse945111: I replied to deanaylev not you.

        • I have unimpaired vision at all distances and I can easily tell the difference. Incredibly easily. And I'm not picky, I'm the kind of person who says Soniq TVs image quality is fine (not as good as some more expensive models but fine) and the inbuilt speakers on a TV will do the job just fine.

        • @holden93: Oh interesting, I find them fairly similar. Can you tell the difference between 1080p and 1440p on a phone?

        • I have eyes transplanted from a bald headed eagle and my xray vision can totally tell the difference

      • Yes, you are correct.
If we are talking semantics, then 720res is considered HD. My comment on it being 'low res' is more a comment on a current 5" phone having a low DPI, I was looking at sub $300 phones from China, a lot of these have 1080 as standard now, the next 6 months should see many of these being available here (you can import yourself now).

I use Whirlpool for my data, they tell me 2100 is a 4G channel in Aus (not that I'd know otherwise); http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies

Where are you getting your data? There are definitely more bands than the ones you're listed if you're talking 2G, 3G and 4G.

As industry is pushing 4K pretty hard (LED, commercial AV, etc), I consider 720 to be low res. You can get away with 1366x768 being HD under some schemes.

I got my information from here a long time ago: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4G_Australia

And it seems like there's still no 2100 listed for Telstra, so I'm not sure which is correct, I guess only Telstra knows the answer.

Also, from my memory anyway, Telstra, Optus and Vodafone mainly use 1800 for capital cities cause this was the first frequency available to them, and Optus only used TDD2300 in Canberra so for a long while people with Optus there couldn't get 4G and really weren't many devices had support for it.
It's only until late last year that Optus and Telstra starting to roll out 700, and Vodafone has some rollout plans for 850.

Never really heard of 2100 being used by Telstra for either 3G and 4G, but I could be wrong.

        • @clse945111:

Thanks. Used to be across all this 5 years ago when I started getting into smartphones, but have been well away from the pulse recently.

I wouldn't get this just yet.

Wait for the ASUS Zenfone 2 to come out, the rumours are that there is going to be a 5 and 5.5 inch version, and packing 2 or 4GB of RAM according to the ASUS site. Expected pricing is starting from $200+.

    Processor 64-bit Intel Atom Z3560/Z3580
Operating System Brand-new ASUS ZenUI with Android 5.0 Lollipop
    Memory LPDDR3 2GB / 4GB RAM/
    Storage 16GB/32GB/64GB
    Display 5.5-inch, 1920 x 1080 (Full HD), 403ppi IPS display/400nits brightness/ Corning® Gorilla® Glass 3

But if you absolutely need a phone now, this is probably a fairly good device to get. The build quality is pretty low end (plasticky chinese phone feeling) and the display is fairly mediocre — I've noted the pixel pitch is rather high and on a 720p 5 inch display, the individual pixels sticks out quite like a sore thumb.

    • Ye hopefully that Intel CPU performs well. It's got the GPU from the 5S running a MUCH higher resolution screen. If it does perform well, that phone is honestly the only one that matters.

    • Yes I'm waiting for that to come out as well, not sure when it will come to Australia if at all though. Otherwise will have to buy grey stock, and hopefully the price of US$299 is true for the 4GB RAM version.

  • You can get a LG 3G (imported or Refurb) for $300. Thats where my money went.

    • Did you mean G3? Where did you get it for $300?

      • Pfft, no skills today…

G2. Other than the buttons being on the back (I can understand some may not like), its nice hardware for the $$$.

        • Where did you get it for $300? Cheapest i got mine was $328 from Kogan's ebay sale.

The button on the back actually makes sense. When you hold the phone, that's where your fingers naturally end up being.
Besides, when you slip on a case side buttons become harder to press as they become recessed.

        • @scrimshaw:
ebay for refurb or international seller, have a look.
Nothing wrong with %10 more for new local stock.

  • Got this phone. So far so good. No word on rooting it yet nothing seems to work.

I did however get hearthstone working on it and it's pretty decent.
