It's actually pretty good, for a phone that is under $250 dollars. Data compiled from GSM Arena.

Brand Endurance Rating Talk time Web browsing Video Playback
      Moto G 2014 50h 11:49h 6:37h 6:05h
      LG Nexus 5 40h 16:40h 4:46h 6:06h
      LG G2 81h 25:15h 11:42h 9:28h
      HTC One 48h 13:38h 9:58h 10:02h
      Apple iPhone 5s 54h 10:46h 9:58h 10:31h
        • +6

It's not always the size of the battery.

        • Still, it's a pretty decent phone for $230. It's hard to recommend anything else in the $230 range, their battery capacity will be fairly similar as well. Unless you'd like to explore the chinese options like Xiaomi Note.

If you compare it against some of the mid end phones of yesteryear:

Phone Endurance Talk web Video Price
          LG Optimus L9 P760 42h 11:07h 5:02h 5:53h $190
          LG Nexus 4 E960 32h 14:17h 4:34h 4:55h Not sold
          Samsung Galaxy Ace 3 34h 9:32h 6:38h 6:54h $245
          Samsung Galaxy S III 40h 12:18h 6:16h 8:14h $250?
          Motorola Moto G (2014) 50h 11:49h 6:37h 6:05h $230

Much better than the Nexus 4 ever was— the chipset does seem to be pretty power efficient despite the small battery size. It does have a major downside and its the fact that the battery is non-removable.

        • +5

Unlike you I am speaking from experience because I actually have one of this series and the battery life is excellent. Even after one day of heavy use, half the charge remains so it should last me 2 days. But I charge when I get home. So Moto have really done a lot in this design to reduce power consumption. And I leave things like WiFi on. The energy audit screen shows that the biggest drain is the display. This is great because I can forget all about extra packs, booster chargers and all that junk. It's not all about the size of the battery.

I know about the power hungry Galaxy, a friend of mine complains about that. He keeps toggling the WiFi thinking it might be that. I just smile.

        • +1

Samsung has really bad software that drains battery like no tomorrow, it is called 'TouchWiz'. Moto G is a very well balanced battery phone, the software has been completely designed around saving battery, and the processor has been selected to save battery, unlike flagship processors which are all geared towards power only. No bloat etc. Already has android lollipop unlike Samsung/HTC/Sony/LG. Moto is basically creating Nexus phones, but with better battery life! Maybe try a Moto G, you might actually be super surprised like I was!

        • +2

Galaxy S3 was the phone with worst battery life ever, at least for me. Struggled to get 2 hours screen on time on a good day. Moto G 2014 gets 3.5 to 4 hours SoT easily. Read reviews. I owned the first Gen Moto G and it was slightly better in terms of battery as it has the same SoC and smaller chip. Galaxy S3 had an old SoC that isn't anywhere as efficient as a Snapdragon 400 in the Moto G.

        • +1

Ignorance is strong with this one…

        • you're half right. on crappy networks (e.g. lebara), the battery drains fast. barely lasts a day now with lots of internet usage. but it was excellent on my telstra sim. and on flight mode, it lasts a surprisingly long time (for watching movies)

        • the gsmarena battery life figures are always way off. ten hours of screen on time on a 5S? LOLOLOLOLOLOL!!!!

        • @sylon:
The one good thing about s3 is that the battery is replaceable. Is it the case on this Motorola too?

        • @hoxygt:
          Won't even bother answering…

  • +4

    @ms
Surely you could just power it with eneloops ;)

  • Lol, yes, just wait for the next deal on eneloops.

    • +1

already have too many of them….

  • +1

Isn't it only a short while before the Moto G 4G 2nd edition is available? That's supposed to have a bigger battery as well.

If you don't need data then fine, but otherwise waiting a month or two seems a better bet.

    • The main difference being the 2nd Edition will be made by Lenovo and not Google, I have no experience of Lenovo phones while these are the last product made under the Google umbrella

      • +1

In practical terms, these were designed and built under google control (sale only went through the end of Oct), and the actual manufacture is the same as before - a chinese factory.

The next generation might be more lenovo.

        • +1

So exactly what I said the Next Gen is being built under Lenovo with parts and things designed by Lenovo.

        • +1

          @sn809:

No, not what you said at all. This phone is the second edition and sane was referring to the 4G version of this phone.

        • @dazweeja:

Did you understand that [@sane] is talking about the next edition of the 4G or in your terms the 3rd edition, which @sane states is about to be released soon. I am stating it may not be as good as it is made by Lenovo not google anymore.

        • +2

          @sn809:

No. In everyone's terms the 4G variant will still be the second edition. It will be the same phone as this with a 4G radio and maybe a minor CPU and/or RAM upgrade. It will still be the same Google/Motorola design. It will probably be manufactured in the same factory too. Look at this page and see that the last 4G variant is listed as a first edition phone:

          http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moto_G

Similarly, the next 4G variant will be a second edition phone which is what everyone else other than you is saying.

        • @dazweeja:

Then you and @sane are way behind the times and @sane is the one responsible for the confusion. The second edition that you are referring to ie model G XT1039 has already been released and is already available

          http://www.gsmarena.com/motorola_moto_g_4g-6355.php

          http://www.mobileciti.com.au/motorola-moto-g-xt1039-lte-blac…

what @ sane has stated above states a newer version that the XT1039 is going to be released soon, which if released will be made by Lenovo, which I have stated.

Motorola transfer to Lenovo completed in October 2014

PS you are welcome enjoy your Australia Day bargains.

          http://www.cnet.com/news/lenovo-closes-acquisition-of-motoro…

        • +1

          @sn809:

No-one is questioning that the new 4G variant will be released after the Lenovo acquisition. But it will be the same phone as this one. It won't have a Lenovo design. It won't have Lenovo parts. It will be this phone - designed by Google/Motorola - with an added 4G radio. It will be know as either the Moto G Second Generation 4G or the Moto G (2014) 4G or whatever you want to call it. There are only 2 generations. The one released in 2013 (in GSM, CDMA and LTE variants, ie. the XT1039) and the one released in 2014 (with GSM and soon-to-be-released LTE variants). The LTE variant of the Moto G (2014) is the phone that we are talking about. It's ridiculous to suggest that a phone about to be released wasn't designed when Google still owned Motorola. Sane and I are saying the same thing.

The third generation - if it's made - will have "parts and things designed by Lenovo". The Moto G (2014) 4G won't.

          @dazweeja:

If you are happy with that, I am happy too.

          @sn809:

Moto G 2nd Gen 4G now announced for China. Same phone as this, with 4G:

          http://www.motorola.com.cn/Mobile-Phones/Moto-G-LTE/moto-g-l…

        • @dazweeja:
looks like it will be the first dual-sim 4G phone.
Definitely will upgrade when it comes to OZ.

  • +1

Decent price for Moto E as well, $139 after discount: http://www.dicksmith.com.au/unlocked-smart-phones/motorola-m…

  • +1

is it worth it adding $70 and get the htc m7 instead?

    • Definitely. Far better battery life, more powerful processor and higher res display. Better software also (debatable), and colours are more vibrant on the display. The m7 was released as a premium device unlike the moto G.

    • Where do you get an m7 for $300??!

      • I think DSE sold all their HTC One (m7) phones or remove them from the online store.

  • Be aware that the 4g version of this is expected in the next month or so.

    gsmarena

    • 4G plus dual-sim?

      • 3G plus Dual SIM

  • +1

Are these worth upgrading to from a Samsung s2? My parents are complaining about the s2 being slow.

    • +1

I just bought this Moto G 2014 for my mother yesterday from DSE online using the code 20YESPLZ and came down to the same price ($229 + $5.95 delivery). Probably worth it, considering it should be getting Lollipop and has only some Moto apps that from what I've heard can be removed/disabled. Rest is pretty much stock Android. Stick Nova Launcher and custom icons on it and it will fly.

    • +2

I upgraded to this from the Samsung GS2 and it was definitely a serious improvement. Whole thing works better and camera is way better.

  • I got this phone several months ago for $225. It's a solid little performer. Possibly some more expensive phones are better value if you are using it all the time, but depending on your needs, this could be just the ticket. I also got mine from DSE and they were very helpful and good.

  • I don't understand when people say this was manufactured by google… Moto is short for Motorola.. Does this mean these won't be google or Motorola in future? Won't in then be something different ? - sent from my moto g running lollipop

    • +1

Because google used to own motorola so its highly likely that google controlled the design

    • To add to what Mike_Mav said, Motorola, Motorola Mobility to be exact, was acquired by Google, 2012 ish I believe, then sold off to Lenovo, 2014.

    • +1

Moto G and Moto X have Lollipop support/upgrade soon after Google branded phones. It has something to do with being Google owned (Google would have pushed for Moto to release an upgrade). Also, Motorola used to customise Android heavily (like most of the other manufacturers) prior to being acquired by Google. After Google purchased it, you can see an obvious change to keep it close to plain vanilla Android.

I think the startup animation would mention Google as well (from memory).

  • +2

My one gripe with this phone is the on-screen buttons make it more like a 4.7" display. It's a minor winge though, didn't stop me buying one - can't find a better value branded phone in this class.

    • +1

I own a Moto G, the on-screen button take up some space and make the viewable area smaller.

    • +1

The buttons can be hidden by applications though, like games and full screen videos.

  • +1

I have had the Moto G first gen for almost a year now. It's been an amazing phone - particularly the performance! I came from an S3 and a Note 2, and this blew them away in usable performance. The battery life has also been superb. GPS, Bluetooth, WIFI, full brightness lots of push mail accounts and I still get a full day easily. 1.5-2 if I use it a little more lightly!

The major flaw of the first gen was the poor quality camera and the smaller screen. These have both been addressed in the second generation. I'm very tempted to just upgrade. I use the dual sim functionality too, it's what attracted me to the phone in the first place!

  • +1

Just received Lollipop update on my Moto G, but its the 1st gen. All I can this little gem performed superbly beauty and even better with the latest Lollipop update with its improved android runtime engine.

  • The promo code does not work! However, 60STRAYA works by putting 2 phones in, plus another item (500 and more)!

    • Thats an error. It is not prepaid - unlocked and no sim included.

      • I know, I want to pull the trigger but it is stuck!

        • it should work. I just tried.

    • +1

20STRAYA worked after switching to chrome from firefox. Thanks OP, bought one.

  • Thanks OP! Got one for the missus :-)

    Good

  • @HP thanks for the post mate.

I badly needed a budget but decent phone urgently. I have bought it and collected it too from Nunawading DSE. Staff there are awesome. They were very helpful. I went there within 10 mins after I checked out and paid on the website around 4 pm. The code worded on both Safari and Chrome on Mac. You can enter the code even at the end before making the payment.

For those who would like to have a better understanding about the model, please search for Motorola Moto G XT 1068. It's a Dual SIM 3G Model. It's also called the Moto G2 because it's the 2nd Gen. Comes with a Quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7, 8GB internal memory and 1GB RAM. Please not the memory can be expanded up to 32Gb with an SD card. Therefore it runs smooth.

    Cheers

    • +1

If you ever multitask, you'll probably won't be saying it runs smooth anymore. But it's great compared to similarly priced phones.

      • +2

Yup. Agree with you. It's good for lite use. It's definitely not for Power users.

$239 at Costco if anyone misses out on this deal

Not sure if it a good deal or not as I'm not looking for a phone but I wouldn't buy it out of principal for the bogan straya code. How about the f&#k of we're full code?

Nice enough phone. Looking for my next phone after having an M7 for 2 years. Can't help but feel this phone would be a downgrade though.

    • it would be!

  • Which is the moto 4g ? Single sims fine

  • OK so which half decent 4g shall i get for my missis ?

  • missed out, anyone else selling for a similar price?

    • Costco $239

  • anyone been sent the wrong version?
at least I think I've been sent the wrong version.
    here's why:
    * the box says XT1039 (Moto G) but it has 4g
    * the display is only 4.5"
    * it's only got a single sim slot
