Now that the Windows powered TV boxes are out with 64GB of internal memory for only $115 and are actually able to do the double duty of being used as HTPC and Office productivity PC, I wonder if these Android boxes are kind of redundant now?

    • At the moment they offer support for 4k video and some models (not this) also the h.265 hardware decoding. Unfortunately the CPU of most of the Windows mini-pc (Intel Bay trail) can't deal with this videos file…
Yes the voyo is at the moment the only Windows mini-pc that can decode 4 videos file.

4K is extremely niche though. Most Australians also wouldn't have enough internet bandwidth to reliably stream 4K content, and if you do, then I'm incredibly jealous of your NBN connection.

And there is a lack of 4k content in Australia anyway.

And to play 4K on optical media, you'd need the Bluray equipment to watch it, not a smart TV box.

        • Another interesting using of this box… the cpu is really good… can be like a game console….
You can run all android games and also a lot of emulators… :)

        • I'd recommend getting a Nvidia GTX 960 - 980 they aren't cheap but I think for now that's the only true way to go 4K on a television.

    • For the same price you can get a 8" windows 8.1 tablet with hdmi output which can take anywhere to do the job of PC, HTPC, and laptop.
Why bother with just a box?

Ethernet, more USB ports, and aesthetics, and so on,

        • That Voyo box doesn't appear to have Ethernet and you can add a USB hub to the tablets.
Aesthetically that Voyo box looks like a tablet without a screen, its just a cheap looking plastic box.
          So on?

        • There are loads of other boxes other than Voyo that has ethernet. PIPO for e.g
In saying that a box form factor offers more connectivity than a tablet does.

  • Should I get this or the Rikomagic MK12 (US$96.99). The Rikomagic and this both have same specs, except the Rikomagic has gigabit ethernet. What additional features does the NEO X8-H Plus has over this?

    • I have reviewed also the MK12… but the firmware has some fastidious bug. The X8 Plus firmware is very smooth and stable and Minix also offers a better support…
I don't know if I can.. but I send you the link to my video review of the mk12 on youtube.

      • Is Android buggy on the Rikomagic unit or their custom skins and apps buggy?

        • The firmware has some problems… example the reproduction of the h.265 videos file. Also some Rikomagic apps are buggy.

        • @pcexpertblog:
so currently the Neo X Plus is the best Android media player in the market for this price range?

        • @abracadabra: In my opinion yes.
If you want more… you can take a look at the X8-H Plus… with more features (hardware decoding of the h.265 videos file and GigaEthernet Port) but it is more expensive.

  • Why would you buy this model when for the same price from the same site you can get the Tronsmart Orion R28?

    • Because Tronsmart support really sucks… Their firmware are plenty of bug… take a look in all android mini-pc forums

End of last year I bought the Tronsmart Orion R28. Hopeless. Returned it to GeekBuying and paid the difference for the Minix Neo X8-H Plus. So far, positive experience.
