WD Red NAS or Hitachi NAS (4TB) ?

Recently got a Netgear ReadyNAS RN102, was hoping to get an idea which is better WD Red NAS or Hitachi NAS (4TB)?
Both similiar price from MSY ($229 vs $231)

Reason I bought the NAS is not so much for NAS really, more for data protection. Was going to do a RAID1. Is this the way to go?

Thanks!

As a personal choice, I'd go with WD anytime of the day.

  • either harddrive is fine, but remember for 'data protection' ALWAYS backup regularly (on different media)

    • Isnt doing RAID1 an autobackup already?

      • RAID1 is only protected against hardware failure only (e.g. 1 harddrive fails)……

It does not cover accidental deletions, data corruption or virus attacks, both hard drives fail at the same time, theft, etc

        • Ok thanks! Can you recommend a back up software for PC? I'll back it up into a 3rd seperate hard disk

        • @tm87:
Will you be running your PC running 24/7?

        • @trex: Not really..I usually turn it off before I sleep

        • @tm87: I would recommend that you get a Green WD instead of a Red one. It would be much cheaper.

FYI, I am using a Green WD on my Synology NAS and it works just fine. Red is used mostly when running it 24/7.

  • WD anyday too. Hitachi can't even get NTFS compression support working properly on their new 6TBs.

  • Hitachi have the most reliable track record and are owned by WD nowadays. They run cooler and use less power.
Green drives shouldn't go in a raid, because if they head park, they often show as 'failed'.

Also, 'greens' often use MORE power than a full performance drive, assuming the same workload.

To be fair, the power comments were from 2TB days, so they may have fixed whatever their bugs were.

In order of preference Hitachi > WD > Toshiba (Hitachi) > Seagate.
