Crest Slimline Pocket-Sized Power Bank 3500mAh $5 @ Coles (NSW?)

390

Coles is selling a Crest-branded slimline power bank for $5. I wasn't sure of the original price because there was no price tag on the actual box or on the display shelving, but the self checkout scans it as $5! It was the last one where I purchased it (West Ryde).

Capacity is 3500mah, not very big but the power bank is adorably small and will easily fit inside a business shirt pocket.

It's located in the back 2 school section, where they also sell $5 keychain 2600mah oblong shaped power banks.

Op how come ur coles uht milk 1 ltr costs $1.70?

    • +1

      urrrr, uht milk :p

      • Even devondale is somewhere like $1/L

  • The biggest scandal to come out of this is 1 litre of Coles uht milk for $1.70.
I thought home brands were $1.00

    • Yeah, especially since it's Coles branded?http://shop.coles.com.au/online/national/drinks/cold/long-life-milk

UHT is universally cheaper than refrigerated milk overseas so I thought our UHT prices are/were regulated (the "everyday" price should be 95c now?). Skim milk abroad was also universally cheaper or equally priced from my experience (apparently since the fat can still be processed for profit). Australia must confuse tourists with our pricing anomalies.

There's a fear the major supermarkets are pushing us in the direction of Europe such that UHT becomes the norm.

First I've heard of this "fear".

It seems very unlikely to me simply because people prefer fresh (well, as fresh as it is) milk.

May be fear mongering by dairy farmers. They suggest milk may follow the route of lamb and end up more expensive domestically (than before the price cuts) since they can make higher profits selling to Chinese supermarkets than local ones (it's popped in the papers since 2012). It would probably happen anyway - now they just have an excuse.

A lot of Australians that don't travel much aren't aware of the UHT trends happening overseas. In Germany I could often only get extended life milk even from refrigerators (actually called extended shelf life or ESL milk, it's filtered and heated at a lower temp than UHT but higher than pasteurisation) and in the US you'll even find "organic" UHT within refrigerators.

Oh, this is not normal UHT milk, it's the lactose free version.

      I'm lactose intolerant :)

  • Thank you for posting; must check out our local Coles.

Some of these little recharge banks come in real handy; I have a few little varieties myself. What I have found best though is to always carry that spare charged up battery. I even have a charge block that charges the mobile and spare battery at same time (for a Samsung Galaxy).

I don't know about most vehicles but I recently hired a Holden Cruz on holiday, which came complete with a USB slot for charging mobiles, ipads etc. Should be standard in all vehicles now I would expect (my own is a much older vintage).

  • None at Broadway

  • Any Coles in Eastern suburbs Sydney selling these?

    Thanks.

  • coles in westfield at BJ had the 2200mha version ($5) on friday, just above the mobile phone display

  • Thanks. I am looking for the 3500mah model. Cant find it anywhere :(

  • How long would this last in "standby" once fully charged?

  • Only the small ones at bondi junction. I don't reckon those ones are worth it probably…

  • No stock in most of Sydney by the looks of it

  • Checked in Chatswood and Parra and couldn't find either :(

  • How thick is it? Reckon there's 18650s in there?

If so, this isn't a bad buy. Buy one, pull it apart, put in a few decent (Samsung/lg/etc) 18650s and you're set.

I'd still personally pay the extra for an Xiaomi though. Around $15-20 delivered for a 5200mah these days. Lower quality ones have cheap, crappy batteries which degrade massively each discharge, the electronics are usually terrible efficiency (some below 70% even, xiaomos are 90%+ for comparison) and build quality is usually absolutely terrible. Chances are it'll be $5 for a throw away power bank.

    • It's very slimline, so it doesn't use 18650 cells. It would be a pouch form factor.

Aw, from personal experience in the past I just wouldn't bother with any cheap power banks. I've wasted a good $100 on testing various power banks (kogan, random brands off CoTD, Chinese unbranded off ebay, etc) and they just can no where near keep up with any recent ones. The whole lot of them combined wouldn't out perform a single 16000mAh xiaomi, just isn't worth it unless you're needing ~1-2 extra hours of battery life for 10-20 times (recharge cycles).

If you wanna have some fun, return it after a month under warranty and see what happens, could get yourself a replacement after those 10-20 recharge cycles.

          Decent ones*

I took your word for it :) Returned it today.

I already have a decent 6000mah powerbank (one that I built myself using a Ruinovo 18650 enclosure), but it is kind of thick, heavy and would put a big bulge in my pants (no, not happy to see you, just charging my phone).

This one was small enough that I could hide it in a shirt or jacket's pocket and charge my mobile as I walked around.

        • @scrimshaw:

no, not happy to see you, just charging my phone

I almost choked on my Tim Tam.Thanks!

    • Yah but 5 bucks

        See my above comment.

        To;Dr:
From experience, 10-20 recharge cycles before batteries go to complete crap. Full recharge lasts only an hour or two of hard use on my nexus 4 with cheap power banks, compared to well over 10-15 (sometimes more) using a 5000mah xiaomi.

Good if you need 1-2 extra hours of charge on a short term basis, otherwise a waste of money.

  • The smaller power banks have reportedly dropped further in price, according to user A3australia,

The cylinder shaped ones are now 3.50 from $7.50.
