    woolies sell a fairly decent one for under $5 …steaks are easy to cook can get timings online for the outcome you want it's one of the easiest things ever. can't understand why anyone would fork out money like this on a thermometer to check.

      Why would wouldn't just buy a digital thermometer and according to their website use the following guide.
      48° Rare
      54° Med-Rare
      60° Medium
      68° Med-Well Done

        I think digital thermometers are like manual cars. They cost less and work fine.

        This device looks like an automatic car. It costs more but looks easier to use - it sits inside the steak and tells you when it's done.

        Saying this device is overpriced and gimmicky is a bit like saying automatic cars are overpriced and gimmicky. Some people don't mind paying extra for the convenience.

        Meanwhile, I bet there are lots of people who can cook a great steak without using any overpriced gimmicky gadgets of any kind. :)

        I have a phone app where I tell it how thick the steak is and how I want it cooked and it tells me how long to cook per side. Works an absolute treat and it will even alarm when its time to turn.

        I dont think its ever messed up a steak for me.

      I have a Thermapen, never used it for a steak as I'm pretty good with guessing rare/medium rare.

      But it is a very useful tool for roasts, especially slow cooking.

      have bought refurb and brand new. both work just as well. $70 for a refurb (read working perfectly) thermapen or $80 for a steak whatever?

        Bought a refurb from the same guys a few weeks back but was charged £6 delivery…go for it while there's no shipping charge.

        Seller was great to deal. Can almost get 2 for the local price and provide your own warranty :)
