"or want to prank the wife while she's watching her favorite TV show"

I'm sure your wife loves you EC.

  • Any good remotes with a keyboard? Browsing on a smart TV is far difficult.

    • Save your money.
If you have an LG smart TV connected to your wireless network download the free LG remote app. You can control everything from your phone/ipad/tablet etc… The only thing I can't get it to do is to turn on and off. It kinda switches it into a stand-by OFF as opposed to power down.
For anyone using an LG G3, Samsung S2 (or greater), or any Android infrared phone, you will most likely have a universal remote app. My LG G3 is set to power smart TV, sound system, Apple TV etc…

Rang LG when the tv was under warranty - claiming remote was faulty. Days later the remote in this deal arrived. Seems I saved $15 :-)

  • These remotes have a relatively short life. ON button sometimes take a few presses to work after a few months of very limited use. That's why 2 have been replaced free for 2 LG TVs.

    • Mines lasted 5 years.

      • Obviously it's not a recent model remote then. TVs were much more expensive back then. The recent 50" FHD was around $600, with this remote.

TVs are in home of my elderly Father, who does not watch much TV. As ON button is one of his most used, it has failed first on 2 remotes. LG acknowledged it is a known issue.

      • This model remote wasn't even available 5 years ago. You had an "apps" key on your remote in 2010?

LG remotes have gone through a few variations, different key positions, added functions since.

But realised mine are not this current generation either, so quality & durability may have improved in last year or so.

    • You don't need to press the "Power" button to turn TV on just press any of the number keys. :)

Turning off though requires a press of the power button. This works fine with my 2 different era LGs. No probs about dodgey buttons for me.

This deal would have been handy 2 weeks ago when I needed to replace lost remote. Cost me $20 on eBay which I thought was still ok.

      • Retraining a 93 year old has proven difficult. I have repeatedly shown that pressing a channel number turns TV on, but he still uses the ON button :-(

Different era remotes will potentially have different issues. They may have resolved the issue with this model.

My guess it is probably due to my father pressing the ON button harder, as there is a delay between press & power up. That can wear out the conductive pad of the remote's membrane under the key. But similar wear can be expected in households with a lot of use - like children repeatedly pressing buttons.

I used to repair remotes. That's why I was surprised by the short life before issues arise in 2 remotes in 2 TVs. I'll repair them when they totally stop working. Or there is always the Harmony remotes as a replacement - no issue with their ON button used with the LGs.

        Hope your suggestion helps others.
