  • Good luck trying to find any…

Our local one was out of stock for the $1.25 deal last week… :(

    • +28

Plenty more fish in the sea JV.

    • +3

They were out of stock coz the deal was 2 weeks ago, not last week jv :)

I got the last 20 at Coburg on the Saturday of the sale as well as a raincheck for a further 12.

    • Ever heard of rainchecks?

    • I'm sure there will be plenty at 6am in the morning.

And before you go 'wow this guy is keen on a bargain' I live above a coles. :P

    • more than plenty at the few stores I went to in WA, I think they had trouble getting rid of it

    • Get a raincheck. I actually tried, and the store I went to made up some bull that I could only get a raincheck for 6.

    • Raincheck

Say you wanted 20 and use it all year to get at that price.

(I get my regular connoisseur nice cream at discounted price all year round)

      • So if you order 20 don't they make you buy 20 when they are back in stock?

        • No, no at all.

I bought 4 on my last shop…. different flavours. They scratch off and mark up four less.
I've had some young check out operators that haven't done that…..so I keep using them.
Sometimes one if I'm just short in freezer space.

I only really buy the connoisseur brand. And at the special price.

  • +1

You guys crack me up, you really do. Keep up the good work TA!

  • How long can these last? I couldn't find an expiry date on mine.

    • +3

      Best before 2087

  • Do these taste any better than the cheapo coles cans that are always $1.20?

    • -1

Probably, but not worth paying double the cost for IMO $5.18 per KG vs. $10.81 per KG.

    • +9

      Yes

      • +3

Chilli oil is da bomb! … so … yummmoooooo

    • +1

I'd never tried the brand before, but someone mentioned on the previous deal that this was the best canned tuna, so I thought I'd give it a go, just to try. Ended up buying six more tins. It does taste better than the generic stuff. I'd probably compare it to whole chicken breast versus chicken mince. Except in tuna form.

      • Thanks for the 3 comments guys. Ill grab a heap while its on special then probably go back to the cheap stuff still next deal :)

  • Might get a few of these. I usually buy the Greenseas tuna brand. Hope they come in different flavors as well.

    • They do, but not much variety

  • Almost every time I go to pickup a 50% off item from the catalogue at coles or woolworths there is never any stock on the shelves and you have to ask them to check out the back to see if they have any stock left.

If you ask for a rain check you usually have to wait a few minutes for them to go out the back and check before they will give you the rain check. Has anyone else noticed this?

    • nope?

    • +1

      yes ¡

      1. In some stores like my local one, there is a 12 can limit.
      2. That is the the normal way when issuing rain checks. It is more important to have the item that the customer came for rather than giving out rain checks.
      • 12 really, our's only do a max. of 6.

  • Are these better quality or something than the John West ones? I usually get John West for $1 when they are on sale every few weeks. Double the price seems a bit much for a special price

    • +2

      this is 185g

      • my bad, cheers

  • what are the best flavours?

    • +4

      what are the best flavours?

      Nothing beats this.

      • Maybe a stupid question but is this any different to the "with chili in oil" that I filled my pantry up with last week? I notice I only have few that are "Chili & Oil"

        • Great question. I just checked my pantry and they also say 'with chilli in oil', yet the official Sirena page doesn't. Maybe they've recently had a name change? Same product 100%.

        • +1

@tightarse: Yeah you're right, must be a recent name change. I just compared the two tins and they have the same barcode (and exact nutritional info) so looks to be a name change only.

    • Chilli is good. Not too hot (if you remove the chilli before using the rest).

    • -1

Chilli. Just don't get the Beans flavour.

    • Italian Oil, Chilli Oil, and Basil Infused. They're all good! Better quality than Johns/Greens.

  • Time to back up the truck

  • Good unit price but the smaller 90g tins on sale last time are arguably better for lunch boxes

  • Does this special apply to Tasmania? We missed out on the last Sirena offer.

I actually did a comparison between this and the Coles branded tuna. They're pretty much the same in terms of flavour and quality.

    • Coles' doesn't have BPA in the lining of the can!

      • No BPA = win

      • I sincerely doubt that.

Virtually all aluminium food containers are lined with plastic to prevent imparting metallic aftertastes, and that plastic lining whether it specifically contains BPA or not, will leech contaminants into the stored food; people really need to stop getting hung up on BPA as endocrine/hormone-disrupting chemicals are not by any means limited to one synthetic, polycarbonate compound (there's DIBP, DBP, BBP, DIHP, DEHP, DIDP, and DINP to name a few; it's a lose-lose situation).

Secondly there really is no such thing as "BPA-free" regardless of what the feel-good, clever marketing label says:

        • "it's a lose-lose situation"

          True enough

Think Choice magazine found Sirena had higher levels than the other brands a couple years ago - many of which have subsequently attempted to adapt to customer concerns (for what that is truly worth scientifically)

But, nevertheless Dr Karl thinks the problem is somewhat overblown ;-)

  • +1

    I'm quitting tuna now.

  • +2

The last couple of times this was posted @ $2, the price wasn't reduced in Perth…

  • Have some credit from the Jim Beam fiasco so will put it towards this. Bulking up at the gym so may buy a case if these are as good as everyone claims.

  • BPA is not as bad as mercury. Unless its pole caught, normal tuna from big tuna fish has high levels of mercury. Don't forget the frozen new zealand wild caught Hoki/Whiting/Dory that goes on sale every so often which are much lower in mercury.

  • Bought two cans today. Will open one for lunch. Twice the size of the smaller John West cans that usually goes for $1 on sale at Coles. Might buy a couple more if they're good.
