Seems fairly straightforward. If (and only if) you already have gold status on another airline or alliance (that is not an Etihad partner airline), Etihad will give you gold status to try them out.

  Got an email this morning telling me I've been upgraded to Gold.

    Same. I received my base level invitation and so I signed up. In the about me section I indicated I was Qantas platinum and Virgin Au gold. Two days later I get an email saying I am now etihad gold.

    I suspect they are doing this to filter out people so make sure you say you are Qantas gold or higher.

        @danielh: when i login it shows up as gold status, but if i go to the print card page it shows up as the bottom tier.

        I had no problems with virgin when i quoted my etihad guest number, it shows up in their system as gold. But I didn't get very good seating, probably because i didn't use it when booking (another company made the booking). Got me into the lounge just fine

        Try going to that site (after you have logged in).

        Shows that i'm gold in the top right hand corner. But the card itself on the print card page is the lower tier, with just a single diamond on it.
        Anyway, with virgin there is no need to carry your card, unless you want to accrue points with velocity and enjoy the etihad perks.

        Ahhhh, I did not know about the number of diamonds thing. I just assumed that the PDF I saved was gold in colour and hence a 'gold card'.
