Is it the 900i or 900f model?

  • Is it cheapest ever?

  • +2

G900 If that helps. Its 50%. Great phone less than $500.

    • +1

but is it the f or i model?

      the f doesn't support the optus 2300 4g band i believe.

        • +30

mate, its a general question to anyone who might know.

no need to take it personally!

        • +10

@bradharvey: Im cool. Not offended. I do apologise for not having answers you require. I didn't expect to have them. Just wanted to share a bargain. Take care.

      • The user manual from Kogan website for their Galaxy S5 says SM-G900FD.

        https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-galaxy-s5-4g-lte-sm-g90…

        • +2

900fd is the dual sim model.

        • +1

@netbies: Hmmm, maybe they just uploaded a manual that they could get their hands on. I don't know.

      • +2

I've queried with Kogan in the past what specific model the S5 G900 is they sell over the phone as I was chasing the SM-G900I model.

They advised it's the SM-G900I model they sell. As the person telling me this didn't seem to have a clue and didn't seem overly confident, I rang back and spoke with someone else and they advised it wasn't the G900I.

I then sent them an email asking the same question (so that I had it in writing should I purchase one) and they advised it's not the SM-G900I model. Apparently they used to sell it……or at least they claim they did!!!

      • I'm a bit confused. Does this 'FD' model support Optus 4G? Does it support all relevant bands in Aus?

        • +1

FD does support optus 4G. Vaya 4G works great on my dual sim model i got from QD

        • +1

DO WE KNOW FOR A FACT THAT ITS ACTUALLY "FD" MODEL?

        • @Meteorite: I asked via local chat, they have no clue which model it will be.

        • +1

maybe because they dobt have them in stock, and that they have to yet source it

  • +1

    Don't forget 2% cash rewards

  • +9

Wait another 2 months .. S6 and S6 Edge are going to be released in April and S5's price will plummet.

    • +25

No Micro SD Slot,No waterproof,No removable battery.

      No deal!

      • +3

I've got an S4. It's likely to be my last Samsung phone. Bonehead maneuver.

        • +4

I sold My S4 two months ago now i have a HTC one M8.
          Best phone ive ever owned.

        • +1

          @holden93:

I have friends who bought previous HTC and had nothing but issues. It's a very model dependent thing. I do wish they'd stop making batteries that can't be removed. These companies that talk about recycling and the environment on the one hand and build batteries you can't replace on the other are hypocrites.

        • @syousef: Ive honestly not had a single problem with mine.
My s4 restarted at least once every day sometimes more for absolutely no reason.

        • @holden93:

Does your retain the setting when it asks what your preferred application to open something is? Mine loses those preferences on every restart.

        • @syousef: could very well be an android thing with its KitKat v20f update. It does so on my LG G3 bought from Telstra, but its perfect on the international G3 model (latest android 5.0 v20h)

        • @holden93

I drawered my S3 and bought a one plus one.
          Best phone I've ever owned.

        • @godzill:

          I'm still on Jellybean.

      • yeh but the smallest capacity is 32gb which is not bad, its more than enough for most people.

the s5 was not 100% waterproof, there are cases of it going in water and not working again, only real water proof phone is the xperia z, even the awesome htc m7/m8/m9 arent waterproof so that shouldent be a big deal.

no removable battery, thats no big deal either, I my self had a s4 and I was using an expandable battery case, the same thing will be available for the s6 once it comes out, so nothing is missed.

s6 will be released April 10th in 20 countries, not sure if AUS is on the list. it will be announced when its closer to the release date.

and the new m9 is a disappointment, looks exactly the same, they could have at least gotten rid of the ugly black bar at the bottom with the HTC logo, its a bit thicker than the m8, and the new camera doesnt even have OIS, a much needed feature for a flagship phone's camera these days.

        • You are forgetting the biggest thing NEW should mean MORE features NOT taking them away.
and 32gb is nothing ad some apps music and some movies and that is gone.

the S6 is the biggest flop of the year and it's just started.

        • +2

32Gb micro sd card is under $20 these days, 64Gb under $40. I would prefer to have dirct access to my photos and contact backups in case phone fails, where you lose everything. Yeah, not everyone uses the cloud.

Not happy you have to take the phone somewhere to change the battery, lose it for a day, and then have to pick it up, instead of buying an original Samsung battery for $15 delivered. Ironic that half the things I complain about in iphones, have now come to the S6. I also like to carry a spare battery with me in case I really need to use the phone, smaller than a charger. I definately won't be buying one.

        • @abacus: re the microsd - i actually welcome it because it finally means there is a 128gb internal memory option available.

With my current Z3, it always telling me to switch to the internal memory when doing slow motion or 4k video capture because microsd storage writes are too slow.

Ideally I'd have both options but would rather internal if i had to choose.

        • @abacus:

You can backup to a computer or OTG USB if you don't want to use any of the millions of free cloud backup services. Having anything valuable in just one place is asking for trouble.

Further MicroSD's are usually formatted to FAT32 which is the most easily-corrupted file system in common use.

      • +2

No he's saying to wait for S6 to release because then the price of the S5 will decrease.

    • +1

Same was said for S4.. it did for a bit but soon went up again.

      • +2

        Finally, s4 will be cheaper.

        • +1

The S4 still isn't worth upgrading from my S3 at around $400

        • +1

          @Fobsessive:

I think under 350 will be a good price point for s4.

        • @morgs640: Is that website legit? $US189.97 - 194.17 sounds too good to be true for even a refurbished S4

        • @Fobsessive: Ive bought a refurb razr m and a couple of screens and they were fine. no paypal though which is a shame. I did have an issue with another razr m i got from there but got refunded quite quickly when i put in a dispute.

    • +2

I wouldn't say it would plummet, maybe near $400 by then.

  • "The user manual from Kogan website for their Galaxy S5 asys SM-G900FD"

Is that the dual sim model?

  • FYI Samsung Australia does not cover international handsets under warranty ie devices purchased from Kogan.

    • +8

Samsung Australia's warranty is awful anyway. You have to send it in to be assessed. If they decide the issue is your problem it's $50. I had a broken galaxy tab 3. Charge socket destroyed by my 4 year old daughter. So I knew exactly what was wrong and I'd even googled to see how it was fixed. I knew it wasn't a warranty issue. But they flat out refused to give me an estimate for fixing it based on my "hypothetical" situation. I had to put it in for $50 and wait a week for it to be assessed. And would have no recourse if they wanted to charge $200. To get this information took several phone calls - one to their support division and one to a more local support number. Finally I got sick of being put on hold and went into the Sydney store. The only way the service could be worse is if they kneed you in the groin on entry to the store.

In the end I bought the part and opened it up myself voiding the useless warranty. The part cost $12 on Ebay and I could have had it cheaper if I got it from China.

Like the Galaxy Tab 3 and the S4 (apart from an issue they won't acknowledge where the S4 sometimes chews up sd cards and a couple of minor bugs on the interface). But their service leaves a lot to be desired. Unfortunately all service from all manufacturers seems to have gone down the toilet.

        • +1

Not my experience. Last Apple products I bought were iPod Photo and iPod Video. Faulty units had to be sent back even when bought brand new. ACCC stepped in on that one and months later policy change was forced. I've heard of people having no hassles with Apple but I've also heard plenty of horror stories. Besides I don't want a phone that bends.

      • I had the opposite experience with Samsung warranty. They sent a courier to pick my tablet up, replaced motherboard and couriered back to me. Was about 2 years ago though so maybe things have changed.

    • Important information

Our goods come with guarantees that cannot be excluded under the Australian Consumer Law. You are entitled to a replacement or refund for a major failure and compensation for any other reasonably foreseeable loss or damage. You are also entitled to have the goods repaired or replaced if goods fail to be of acceptable quality and the failure does not amount to a major failure.

      • Yes but companies can make it hard to claim warranty. They can force you to ship the item at your expense. They can charge a fee for assessing it that is only waived if THEY decide it's a warranty issue. Your only recourse is to go to Fair Trading or equivalent in your state which is usually toothless and understaffed. Or to sue which will cost you more than it's worth for most items. The only reason manufacturers honour warranty at all is word of mouth that they don't would decrease their sales and it also costs them money to deal with Fair Trading and the like.

    RRP $929! pfffff

Price drop obviously as the new S6 comes out next month.

The S6 is a much more desirable handset looks much much much better.

The S6 is a much more desirable handset looks much much much better.

    • +8

Go on, throw another "much" in there

      • +3

        That'd be too much

        • Much too much much?

    • +9

If you don't like removable batteries or memory, or water resistance perhaps. Just buy an iPhone and be done with it.

      • but what if you don't like iOS

      • +1

I don't have any of those on my Nexus 5 and it's nothing like an iPhone.

Purchased one for the mistress. Cheers OP.

    • +3

Did the wife get one too?

    • +2

Is the phone dual sim? She could be two timing you ;)

    • he or she or female-he or male-she?

  • +1

Sorry to sound ignorant, but will this work on the Telstra 4G network?

    • +6

You don't sound ignorant. Ignorant would be not knowing to ask the question, or asking after purchasing the phone.

      • -6

Ignorant is the correct word. Most people confuse the word ignorant for stubborn

        • +1

No you have to have some knowledge to know to ask the question. Ignorant means you don't even know the question. No one has all the answers. No confusion on my part.

        • -1

@syousef: ignorant is not having the knowledge. if you dont have the knowledge thats why you ask the question. if someone doesnt know the question, why do they ask it?

    • Same question Vodafone 4G network.

      • +5

The EBay site indicates that this is the "SAMSUNG Galaxy S5 4G LTE SM-G900" the Kogan site for the "Samsung Galaxy S5 4G LTE SM-G900 (16GB, Black)" https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/samsung-galaxy-s5-4g-lte-sm-g90… indicates that this phone works on 4G for the 800 / 850 / 900 / 1800 / 2100/ 2600 Mhz bands.

Based on this Whirlpool knowledge post entry http://whirlpool.net.au/wiki/mobile_phone_frequencies
This phone should be able to work on some of Telstra, Optus and Vodaphone's 4G bands.

        From Whirlpool:
        - 850MHz (B5) FDD (000000??????????) – Vodafone (refarming 5Mhz of 3G to 4G across all metro areas, claiming by end of 2014)
        - 900MHz (B8) FDD (0000000000000080) – Telstra (a handful of sites, utilises spectrum previously used by 2G)
        - 1800MHz (B3) FDD (0000000000000004) – Telstra, Optus, Vodafone
        - 2100MHz (B1) FDD (0000000000000001) – Telstra (a handful of sites), Optus (Darwin, Tasmania)

    • Also same question
      Optus 4G? Telstra 4G? etc.

I take no responsibility if this information is incorrect. Result of a simple google search.

    http://support.vodafone.com.au/articles/FAQ/Network-coverage…

    What frequencies does Vodafone use?

4G/LTE – lets you surf the internet

Our lightning fast 4G data network runs on these frequencies:
    1800MHz
    850MHz
There are a couple other things you need to connect to 4G, which you can read about on our support page.

3G/UMTS – lets you talk, TXT, PXT and surf the internet
2100MHz – this frequency is capable of managing high traffic, so it’s used mostly in urban areas where there are lots of people and smaller distances between mobile towers
850MHz – this is capable of penetrating deeper indoors than 2100MHz and is also used mostly in urban areas
900MHz – this is used in rural areas where there’s a larger distance between towers. The Vodafone Network in Regional Areas uses this too
2G/GSM – lets you talk, TXT and PXT
    900MHz

  • +1

If above is correct Galaxy S5 SM-G900I gives you all except 2500 planned by Optus. None of the models seems to have that frequency.

  • +1

So have we established what model they supply? Is it the SM-G900FD as per their user manual on their website?

  • -1

How long would shipping be roughly?

    • Kogan shipping time varies widely some receive with 2 weeks and some wait for 2 months

    • Arrive March 20-25 if you buy it from their ebay store, so I'm guessing the same.

  • Any issues with getting Android updates on Kogan's grey imports?

    • samsung phones in general are not that fast for getting latest android version updates. For that you'd have to buy a Moto phone or a Nexus phone…In fact HTC/Samsung/Sony all take quite a while to update to the latest android version.

      • +1

Yeah, i know that about Samsung.

But do they get the updates eventually?

        • Not from my experience….TouchWiz tends to be the excuse for why updates are slow, or never actually come.

        • @bluedez_man: It's probably going to get worse… I've heard that the reason why Note 4 is getting the updates late is because of the kernal changes for VRs I've heard.

        • +1

          Yes. They do come.

e.g. Galaxy Note 2 (launched in 2012) started with Jelly Bean, now running Kit Kat and Lollipop is confirmed for release by Samsung. (About 1-2 updates for each OS version also)

Not fast but I don't get what all the fuss is about getting it so fast when first release versions of any OS (iOS or Android) are so buggy. Also, it's not like the new OS really makes the phone that much better.

  • The S5 will be the last good Samsung phone unless Samsung turns it around with the S7…
With the S6's curved edges you can't even put a tempered glass or plastic screen protector or a case with a lip…

    • It's an iPhone wannabe - curved crap with no expandable memory, no removable battery, and they've taken away the water resistence. Ridiculous direction to take the brand in. RIP Galaxy. In 10 years there will be nostalgia articles about them.

      • +2

Soon they will bend in your pocket too just like an iPhone. Lol

        • +1

The screen comes in bent ;)

Wait, does this mean Samsung actually started the trend with Galaxy Round? (or was it G Flex which came out first?)

      • +1

I am offended by their direction. Sure, S3 to S4, and S4 to S5 were incremental upgrades - but S5 to S6 is a straight deal breaker for many.
A curved screen with no functional purpose? It'll be slipperier and easier to drop and smash so you can buy another one…

        • +1

They have non-edge one as well?

Though I am saddened by MicroSD card and battery :(

        • @AznMitch:

Yes, no microsd is a dealbreaker.

        • +1

According to most big gadget web sites (verge, bgr, engadget etc), S6 Edge is much better in grip feel & comfort. So your assumptions are way too pessimistic. It also does have some functional purpose although too minor for most to care. But hey, it's nicer to look at, quite unique and certainly no one can say it's a iPhone clone. It seems it's quite important to being the first to do something these days in order to not be called a copy cat.

      • +1

I never knew iPhone had a curved display? I can only assume future iPhone will one day have a curved display so would that make iPhone a S6 wannabe once released?

But I do agree that removing MicroSD and removable battery sorta sucks big time. But considering a lot of people still buy the Sony, HTC & Apple phones, seems the majority of people don't care much for removable battery at least. But as an owner of 128GB MicroSD card, I definitely want my next phone to have Micro SD slot if possible.

        • +1

Curved screens are nothing new and are a pain in the butt. Acer Liquid Metal was my phone before the S4 and lasted me a couple of years. It had a lot of good things going for it. The curving nonsense was just something you had to put up with.

  • +1

Still confused … Is this dual sim?

  • +3

Got one, thanks (almost pulled the trigger earlier in the day for a lot more! Thanks op)

  • -4

I think it's dodgy not to mention the storage, it's neither in the ebay page nor the post.
From quick google it appears the base model is 16 gb, which this one likely is.
For basic user it should go Fine, but if you want to use the phone properly at least get the 32 gigs model.

    • +3

Comes with a Micro SD card slot with storage expandable upto 128gb.

  • Is this the same model if you would buy from local shop or on the plan from Optus/Telstra etc.?

Another stupid question - will this work with Aldi mobile, I think it's 3G only? Also, will be taking phone to Spain, how to find out if sim card from Spain works with the phone over there?

  • -3

maybe we should wait until it become $250… not worth that much for andro…
