Overpriced Apple Watch?

I just saw a pricing for Apple Watch that has been revealed today.

The pricing that I find it bizarre is Apple Watch Edition, which seems to be a little bit ridiculous, even for a premium watch.

In Australia, the Apple Watch Edition prices range from 14k - 24k (that's in dollars, not karats - fyi, I think all of them are 18 karats)

What do you guys think about it?

"One karat is 1/24th of the mass, so 24-karat gold is pure. An 18-karat gold ring is 18/24 (or 3/4) gold and 6/24 (or 1/4) other metals."

Important to take: One karat is 1/24th of the mass.

        • @AznMitch: There's people who didn't understand that there would be significantly less gold if the other 25% is a lower density.

If 25% weighs 10 grams, there would be 30 grams of gold,
If 25% weighs 2 grams, there would be 6 grams of gold.
Both could be the same physical size.

        • @xsacha: That's where the term Eureka sorta got famous for. Archimedes found that the density of the gold would be different if cheaper and less dense material is added while he was in bath. When he discovered that, he ran out to the street (while naked from bath), saying "Eureka!". The concept is hard to understand imo (even though it looks simple).

But Kanye West is going to get one…that says it all.

    • +1

Probably paid. As is with Christy Turlington.

  • +4

Even the base model seems overpriced for $500. When you look at the competition (most popular being the moto 360 for $329) you wonder why it costs so much from Apple (even more so than some of their other products).
They're also late to the market and they've hardly come up with anything to make up for that..

Edit: also 18hrs battery life?? What!

    • +1

The Clock will keep going after the 18 hours for a further 72 hours in Standby power

      • While a good feature, people aren't buying this as just a watch, at least I sure hope not

  • Apple is for bling.
18 hours battery life. Wow… that's… worse than any other (cheaper) smartwatch!

  • +1

I'm waiting for the XiaoMi alternative.

Plenty of bootleg MiBands out there.

      me too…

Its interesting, that Apple is now actually targeting the Chinese Market.
That $10,000+ watch is clearly designed at getting super rich chinese people to buy it, especially with the color scheme they used. Gold = Extremely popular with the older generation of Chinese who have many millions to blow on stuff like this.

They introduced the Gold iPhone to push further into the Chinese Market.

I wouldn't pay anything over $200 for one of them, its something that will be the 'in' then will soon be the 'out'. Apple fanbois will snap them up though, they buy every piece of ….. that Apple $hits at them.

    • +1

I wouldn't pay anything over $200 for one of them

But thankfully for just a little more, you can buy the Bright Blue Leather Loop which is compatible with the Apple Watch!

    • Bingo. Chinese face culture, what a disaster.

      • +1

Haha good for manufacturers who know where to tap into for money.

  • +1

What a load of bull. My solid Gold, Rolex Datejust Diamond watch cost me ~$6K delivered from the US.

Who in their right mind would pay $14K+ for some Apple toy?

    • +3

yep Rolex Datejust is a REAL watch, worth real money, that you can pass onto your grandkids and will appreciate in value, not apple flash in the pan trash

  • +1

    Apple fanboys be like:
"OMG Apple created the 6 inch phone"
"OMG look Apple are so innovative"
And now "OMG Apple created the smart smart iwatch omg".
Seriously, there's wayyy better alternatives to all of Apple's products.
I'll support the Crows before I own an Apple product.
    Microsoft or Google before Apple.

    ducks for cover

  • Apple are behind the times with their new watches considering you need your iphone with you for it to fully work.

  • +2

As long as there are people buying it, it's not overpriced.

  • Considering a bloke in China sold one of his kidneys to buy an ipad and iphone I am sure some very wealthy people (and some stupid, not so wealthy people) will totally fork out the cash for this.

If you dig Apple products then go for it, but if I see you busking on the footpath while wearing one I ain't going to give you any change.

  • +3

    SMH.
There are thousands of better options for a timepiece in this price bracket. If you're looking to drop $24,000 on a watch, buy something that's going to hold its value, look beautiful, and have the incredible last-for-generations craftmanship that you're entitled to at this price.

    • +1

A lot of the old tech does eventually become collectable and appreciates in price. Even things like Nintendo 64 are worth more now than their retail price. An untouched original first generation iPod still in its box and wrapper could fetch $1000s.

      • +1

I can't speak for iPods, but N64s are only worth more than their original price (maybe even not then when you account for nearly 20 years of inflation) if they are still sealed in their original boxes. They are not worth even close to their original price if they're unsealed, even in the original box. It's EXCEEDINGLY unlikely that you'll see a return on a $24,000 Apple Watch. More likely they will depreciate incredibly rapidly over the next 5 years to a point where you're basically just paying for the metal.

  • +1

Until I see one and see how the watch functions I think too expensive.
Probably will not care about price after using one though! Will want.

  • -1

<sarcasm>I think the Apple Watch Edition will go really well with my gold and diamond encrusted special edition MessagePad and Vertu Signature running Symbian from 2002…. They will never go out of date.</sarcasm>

  • Wait for the 95% off sale.

    • +1

      And 2% cash reward.

  • A quality watch is made by a highly skilled craftsman and the iwatch by a production line of semi skilled workers. The watch could be passed down through the family like one of mine has been from father to son, on the other hand the iwatch will be passed onto say ebgames for trade in.

    • its called "watch"
I think apple patent the word "watch"!
      and a square watch too

      • I like iwatch, it separates it from the word watch which apple have stolen and sodomised. It wont be long before they try to trademark the word and we'll have to call our watches….arm wearable's.

  • I also agree, I can't see the gap in my life that this watch will fill.

But then again, I thought the same thing of the iPad, which I now enjoy and use regularly.

    • I bought the original ipad on launch and saw it quickly become obsolete with the ipad2 :( I do have an Ipad air but its rarely used.

      • My Dad still loves my iPad 1. At 63 he doesn't care it's not retina and it's fast enough with some old iOS. And for the first time ever I've been able to email my Dad (after many attempts of getting him on the net - Windows Laptop, Ubuntu Laptop, cheapie Andriod, etc). We communicate a lot more now as a result.

        • Mine was on the last supported ios and it just got too slow and unstable to keep, the ios updates just asking too much from the hardware and in part added to it limited lifespan.

  • Ever watched Cloudy with a chance of meatballs 2? it's so aimed at apple.

    Apple watch? 14k?

I think I'll stick with my $10 terrorist watch, thanks. No need to charge each night - the battery lasts 7 years!

24 years old, and still selling strong worldwide.

This man is da bomb with the ladies.

    • Every wanna be hipster wears one now, cool to have an original :)

I do think the Apple executives have lost sight of the real people though. The fact that they are making their own $20k watch and not leaving it to the gaudy aftermarket companies in Macau and The UAE really speaks volumes about them losing perspective. I guess when the execs get $100 million in share options and the average space worker is making $250k, $20k on a watch doesn't seem that unreasonable.

    • this this and it this.. though I still will probably buy the basic as I am interested in the tech whoever has sat down and set the pricing for this has clearly lost sight of both the competition and the real world. I mean a $379 leather or $500+ metal strap for a $400 "movement"? smh i don't see why anyone with more common sense than money would buy anything other than the base model and either just live with the stock strap or wait for aftermarket but maybe i crazy.

  • +1

You don't have to buy it.

  • +1

It's a Veblen good - attractive because its expensive. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veblen_good

  • What you mean..it's Apple, of course it's overpriced..

  • +1

There's a reason why Apple made it 24k.

Its so then people will mention Apple Watch in the same sentence as Rolex and Patek.

So you're playing into their game everytime you say its too much money and you would rather get a Rolex or entry Patek.

What a load of crock over a watch, for heavens sake. Are you all such Princes in your own minds that you will let Apples clever marketing strategy to appeal to your egos allow to spend out such a ridiculous amount of money, just so you can flaunt this, not proven, but highly marketed time piece on your wrist? Also bear in mind the consequences of having it seen by certain low lifes when you are out socializing & they decide to take it from you.
Personally I wear a watch for its' intended reason - so I know what time it is & yes it is a reasonably good one - Citizen. Looks classy & is good quality. Think it cost $165.00 about 5 years ago - doesn't need batteries or wanking to keep it working.
Are we all supposed to start looking like a mobile office as we spend our days in the outside world - with our " look at me watch", phone & god forbid a fax machine strapped on our back? - although I can think of a far better place for a fax to be retrieved from.
What next - one with rocket boosters so you can fart & be projected into the stratosphere? Now that would save on flight costs.

Apple is really struggling with its innovations, took them 3 years to bring out the larger screen smartphone and another 2 to follow the hype of smart watch created by Samsung.

But anyway the smart watch thingy is just a silly tech gadget that will fade in a few years time, they are just next to useless.

  • +2

I think this product will clearly show what a dominant power Apple now is on the tech market.

Regardless on whether you like or hate the watch, it will sell and Apple will make sure of it.

This product shows how much people now value the "Apple" brand and feel the need to keep up with the latest trends.

Apple will help the smart watch become mainstream which will help the competitors and consumers in general.

When the original iPad/iPhone came out, it made the other big players think twice and go bigger and better!

It seems like Apple may have jumped ship a bit fast on the watch trend and this is largely Tim Cook's fault. He is taking Apple to unchartered waters since their smartphone business is over 50% of their turnover and profit. He probably realises that when iPhones start becoming "blackberries", the company is a goner.

I like the design of the watch and its interesting to see Apple extending it's reach to a new market which will help all consumers through increased competition and better products over time.

  • Like many things it's a ripoff. Unless you desire it. Then it isn't. Deep I know.

Nice to see a whole buncha folks who "don't care about Apple" writing hysterical posts about how much they care about Apple for some reason LEL.

  • Wait a minute… isn't that the amount Apple's going to pay us to wear the watches?

I'd expect at least that much to be seen in public wearing a children's style watch in fruity colours!

My 8 year old son has a plain black calculator watch which I paid $25 for and it actually has a keypad which the Apple watch lacks!

    • I'm guessing your kid's nickname is Data, and he appeared a lovable Asian-American in a cult 80s children's adventure film.

My two cents. Apple have potentially jumped the sharked with this product as it doesn't seem to have a clear function, and its aimed at luxury consumers. This is a significant change in direction from what has previously made it so successful.

Apple pricing has always had a premium compared to other manufacturers. But it was arguably worth it as Apple's point of difference was its superior UI, overall design aesthetic and functionality. There were mp3 players well before it, but the original iPod truly revolutionised portable music playing. iTunes created the first viable mass marketplace for music and movie downloads. The original iMac and its integrated suite of products iMovie, iPhoto, garageband, designed for the consumer, made digital media accessible to the average home user for the first time. The iPhone's functionality is run of the mill these days, but at time of launch it integrated so much tech, made it accessible for a reasonable (and reasonably expensive) price that it was a game changer.

The distinguishing feature of all these innovations was not that they were the first, but they offered an integrated easy to use solution to the average consumer that the average consumer was willing to pay a premium for. They also brought a bit of thoughtful design to the mass market. And drove copycats and innovation among competitors.

I don't see that with the iWatch. Rather, I think the iWatch is pitching itself as a must have luxury ubur gadget for the 1% and those who aspire to be them. A lot of the marketing spiel goes on endlessly about the materials that the iWatch is fashioned from rather than its functionality.

I could be wrong obviously, but i don't personally see the market for it……yet. Not with the limited battery life, limited interface. But perhaps if a range of integrated apps are developed and say the watch is used to control an 'internet of things' type domestic functions, home lighting, heating etc etc etc, then it could be a useful control device for this. But who has this set up yet?

I'm no apple fanboi. I have a macbook pro, but I try and use as few Apple applications as possible as I don't want to be tied to the Apple walled garden. But I think the hardware design of the macbook was superior to the competition and worth the premium. I also think its hard not to recognise those areas where Apple has truly innovated. But this doesn't seem one of them.

    • Apple previously not selling luxury goods… what?

Nice to see the price has done a lot of the marketing for them LOL. After reading all the comments here I almost feel like buying one just to annoy people. :D

I like the way it looks: money …

I don't own any Apple products but think fanbois on either side are patently retarted (sic), can't see a compelling reason to wear a smartwatch if it looks like crap - that's every single smartwatch ever except Apple and perhaps that Motoroloa round thing. I haven't seen either in real life yet.

But then we get to why do I want a watch that requires a phone. I already blanket turn off notifications and selectively re-enable: do I really want another device on top of my phone? No.

But for looks I'this is the closest yet I've felt to wanting one. I mean let's face it a lot of people won't be able to afford it.

  • its got you talkin about it. good ol publicity

  • $14,000 and it has a tacky looking push-stud wrist band? This looks like a crappy prize you'd find in a 'bop-the-weasel' arcade display case for 300 tickets, next to the PS2 and the plastic tiara. I'm not kidding.

  • You would have to be CRAZY to buy the 18k gold version over a Patek Philippe or similar. They are wearable works of art and worthy of it's cost - the Apple Watch isn't. Hell, my (on discount) $187.50 Stuhrling is a semi-skeleton watch with 24 jewels and looks amazing, coming with a nice leather band. Why on earth would I pay twice that for a band only just because Apple says so?

  • +1

Overrated phone, overrated tablet, overrated brand. And now, an overrated watch. It is not all about diamonds in life people. Find your self a better reason to work your arse of.

  • I wonder how much the mark up they did for these, not sure if many or any are even going to buy the gold ones, cause no body can afford one, definitely on Ozbaragin!

  • The gold watch exists to make the mid range prices seem reasonable by comparison. They will sell many more 'Apple Watch' versions because the gold one exists, it's a fairly typical anchoring strategy.

  • Stop comparing the Apple Watch to a proper watch.
What if they have called it "The Apple Wrist" ? And it does not give time?
Would everyone still compare it to a Watch? A proper watch like a Patek etc etc ??
This is another electronic product in the range of the phone/tablet that has the defined look of a watch.
What defines a watch? Something you attach on your wrist and gives you time.

  • Sounds a bit ridiculous to me!!

  • when we can play with this on the store?

    • You can play now. Just walk in and make an appointment. They either show you to a station straightaway or allocate you a time later in the day for a hands on.

Just preordered a space grey sports with applecare+.

Fingers crossed it works out better than my mi band even if the apple watch lacks sleep monitoring…

      • ordered the same one… what is your eta?

        • Launch day.
          Pre ordered at 5pm'ish
Ordered another one for a friend at 11pm and his eta is June.

        • @gawky:
          nice
          first in best dressed
i ordered at 5:30pm and got june

        • @Hiroko: what! Holy smoly. I used the iphone app just in case the website got hammered. Maybe that helped.

        • @gawky:
          you made the right decision
a friend logged on the apple site at 5 and it was non responsive
