Samsung 32" (81cm) LCD HD TV - $696 @ Retravision

110

Seems like a good price for a brand name television in this size.

The ad doesn't mention the actual model number, but I
would assume it is the lowest model (32B350).

Samsung TVs have a 1 year warranty.

Possibly limited to only WA stores.

Mod (Neil): OP thinks it could be the la32b350

  • No there is a new budget model out.

Its the la32b350….no swivel stand , lower contrast and 1 less hdmi

    • thanks, i updated the info, i was wondering why the tv pic didn't match. The 350 still isn't listed on the Samsung Australia site though, so I can't find the specs.

  • HD only, now people prefer Full HD

      Good price for a Samsung.

For a screen of this size there's no real need to go full HD IMO.

      • +1

You're right, actually IIRC even on screens up to 46" once you're back 2.5-3m (IMHO comfortable viewing distance) the human eye physiologically cannot see a difference between 720p & 1080p! ;)

      • Yep. People should try to not get caught up in the Full HD marketing hype.

        • +1

this is not marketing mate. this is different type of products. Are u saying old ipod and current ipod are the same? yeah same ipod but different features right? why u have to buy old stuff?

if you have foxtel, they have full hd channel so? is it the same as hd?

remember, apple, orange, etc are fruits, but they are different type of fruits. they are not marketing hype new type of fruit, they are new varieties.

          • @dragonrabit: You've clearly been sucked into the hype to.

No TV in Australia is broadcast in Full HD. It's almost impossible with DVB-T.

The best you can hope for is 1080i or 720p - what Foxtel are offering.

1080p on a 32" at the recommended viewing distance (3x diagonal) is a waste. Consult this: http://www.lowtek.ca/roo/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/resoluti…

            • @cyssero: by posting this link http://www.lowtek.ca/roo/wp-content/uploads/2008/04/resoluti…
u just acknowledged that there is the different between HD and FULL HD.

If no different between FULL HD and HD, why they need to create FULL HD?

go to electronic shop, ask the shop attendant to show u HD and FULL HD. u might need to change ur argument after that. it is pointless talk in here. coz u just have hd tv and u want convince ur self that ur tv is good enough compare than other people that got full hd. so sad :(

              • @dragonrabit: I don't need to go to an electronics store, I've been working at one for 3 years now so I have a bit of a clue what I'm talking about :)

I personally have an LA40N81BDX which is a Samsung 40" Full HD tv. Excellent set. I watch plenty of Blu-ray on it, looks great.

But I would challenge that at 3 meters on a 32" you could tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. I can pretty much guarantee you can't. But you say you can? Because some dodgy salesperson showed you? They probably showed you "HD" TV - One HD or something, then flicked it over to 1080p Blu-ray and the difference is staggering. Of course it is! But that is not a fair comparison between 720p and 1080p. It's not even apples and oranges.

I am not saying there is no difference between 1080p and 720p (of course there is). I just think that at small sizes (32" and less) and at proper viewing distance (2.4m or more) there is no perceivable difference.

No one is going to hook up a Blu-ray player to a budget 32" TV like this. Most people will watch, at best, HD television which is 720p. If they do have a PS3, it will look identical on a 32" set.

Believe me, I am not trying to convince myself of anything - I have a 1080p set anyway :) I am just trying to clear up common misconceptions.

                • @cyssero: i like your comment below, hahahaha. i don't have to say anything that HD (720p) and Full HD (1080p) has different quality ("They probably showed you “HD” TV - One HD or something, then flicked it over to 1080p Blu-ray and the difference is staggering. Of course it is! But that is not a fair comparison between 720p and 1080p ").

off course they are different type of fruits. one is orange and the other is apple.
thats the point that i mentioned start from beginning, coz some people don't believe that you can see the different FULL HD AND HD. If no different, it is pointless the manufacture create this product. This is not marketing campaign.

How can you comparing Hyundai with BMW or Mercedes? yeah they are the same car, but they are different type of car and different quality as well (especially different price). Don't tell me they are the same car that you can ride anywhere.

Thanks for answering my question. spot on mate!!!!!

"But I would challenge that at 3 meters on a 32” you could tell the difference between 1080p and 720p. I can pretty much guarantee you can’t. But you say you can? Because some dodgy salesperson showed you? They probably showed you “HD” TV - One HD or something, then flicked it over to 1080p Blu-ray and the difference is staggering. Of course it is! But that is not a fair comparison between 720p and 1080p. It’s not even apples and oranges.

            • @cyssero: can u tell me why impossible? speed or other things?

              • @dragonrabit: Bandwidth is partially an issue, but there are hundreds of reasons. But more bandwidth per channel leads to less channels being broadcasted. Not sure if DVB-T spec allows for 1080p. We use MPEG-2 over DVB-T here so it would be ridiculously inefficient to broadcast in 1080p OTA.

Lots of people who have HD sets don't have Full HD sets, so they wouldn't even get a signal (or it would be downscaled - pointless), equipment can't handle 1080p OTA, I don't think anywhere in the world (maybe Japan) get 1080p OTA.

Digital cut-over only finishes by 2013 and by then all you need is standard definition (576i/480p) to watch TV. It's 3 years before they even get to the stage where everyone has SD TV. I don't ever see FTA getting 1080p, may happen on Foxtel on 1 or 2 channels in after 5+ years.

                • @cyssero: are u saying for foxtel mentioned on their website (http://www.foxtel.com.au/discover/products-features/hd/foxte…) is a lie?

What format is FOXTEL HD broadcast in?
FOXTEL HD supports both 720p and 1080i HD formats, so that you can enjoy your favourite programs the way the program makers intended. Both the 720p and 1080i formats are carried through FOXTEL’s network. The MPEG4 compression technology that FOXTEL is using ensures the highest possible quality HD images and sound delivered straight to your living room.

I believe in case of foxtel, it won't be a problem for them to broadcast Full HD, remember, they are using fibre optic to broadcast their channel. For sure fibre optic has wider bandwith and faster to deliver the signal than adsl2+ that using multiplexer.

                  • @dragonrabit: I'm not sure you understand what they're saying. None of what you pasted contradicts anything I've said.

720p/1080i = not full HD. This $698 TV can receive those signals and display the picture fully.

In the USA - the worlds largest adopters of cable television, they still do not receive 1080p over cable. Why should Foxtel get it first? And what does ADSL2+ have to do with anything? Are you talking about unrelated IPTV?

They can broadcast approximately 6 SD channels in place of 1 full HD channel - do you think the money hungry cable operators are going to make a sacrifice like that? Read up on how in the states they reduce the bitrate of transmissions significantly just to cram in more subchannels.

                    • @cyssero: yeah my mistake this time read this ads, 1080i and 1080p are different.
but you agree with me as well right that full hd and hd are different? :)

i admit my mistake, someone also need to admit they wrong as well right? :)

                      • @dragonrabit: Well it's not a mistake - you've learned something I hope :)

I absolutely agree there is a difference between HD and Full HD. The tricky bit is when you can actually tell the difference.

It's not the easiest thing to wrap your head around especially with the crazy marketing out there.

      • -1

Ahh… I don't think thats true. There must be some noticeable difference. If you have a 24" computer monitor, there is a BIG difference between 1280x720 and 1920x1080 and it is clearly noticeable.

        • +1

Jared, your word for the day is "native resolution" mate! Ok, that's two words, but it's time for you to do some research dude! ;)

        • +2

2 things - native resolution and distance from monitor.

        • Oh well, can't know everything about tech, it's just too dynamic to catch up with…

  • I've had a 720p 32" Samsung for about 4 years now and I cannot fault it. I've considered upgrading but the picture is just so good. I watch everything from flv, avi and mkv (HTPC) to DVD on it and they all look wonderful. I consider this to be a bargain for an entry level LCD.

  • same, i also have 40" 720p Samsung (R81) and use it on my HTPC playing mkv blu ray and avi mostly, been a truly great tv, been about 2 years now. I think this 32' here is a hot buy :-) My mother has the N81 46' 1080p samsung and playing the same files as me (mkv blu ray and avi) on her WDTV, the picture looks identical. Im sold on just having a 720p tv at the moment.

  • hi all

not sure if anyone knows this but the retravision salesperson was saying they extended the deal until tomorrow so if anyone's still interested.
