  • these carriers must be really struggling with the shit exchange rate (although, shouldn't that mean they get more traffic coming in the other direction now?? :) )

    • Ya. Now would be a horrid time to travel to the US.

        was just there last week… wasnt that horrid :)

        just makes things like dinners out and shopping closer to parity here (rather than being cheaper)

          Being on par with Australia is not a good thing. Sydney is the 5th most expensive city in the world.

          What I am saying is that you're paying 30% more for every single thing you buy. So compared to 1-2 years ago, it is horrid.

          @watwatwat:

          you're assuming when i said 'here' i meant sydney.. FYI, not everyone lives in Sydney :)

          It also depends where in the US you visit.. I went SF->LA and found plenty of places even in SF which were much cheaper eating than anywhere i could find when in Sydney (and dont get me started on cheap craft beer :) )
          Whereas while in Disneyland obviously prices were higher due to the obvious tourist location

        • @SBOB: Best part of Disneyland was the Ihop connected to my hotel.

          Anaheim weather is nice though!

          @Kalanski:

          we only did breakfast but found denny's better on our single trip to each… but how could you not love disneyland :P

        • @watwatwat:

          I agree - when I was there 4 years ago it was 1.08:1 now its, what, 0.77:1? I shudder to think what accomodation in NYC would cost these days

        • @watwatwat: Agree completely. When I was last there in 2013 I was surprised at how expensive things were even with the exchange rate at 90 cents. Of course if I was living in an Adelaide-equivalent city over there my cost of living would be lower (houses, cars, groceries) but for eating out, and transport, costs were easily on-par with Australia, especially once you take into account their god-forsaken tipping culture.

        • @Kalanski: Mmmm, pancakes with your steak. :p

  • If you book through a third party like this, can you still access AirNZ's UpgradeMe program. Or is that only through booking with them direct?

    Sub $1000 to LAX is going to be the new norm with the currency the way it is. Expect to see a lot more of these promotions (there seems to be at least one a month)
