You have to set up Plex, but if you do, it works great.

I have three Rokus. Two are the Roku 3 model and one is a Roku 2 XD. Ordered the Roku 3s from Amazon and picked up the XD from eBay. This is the cheapest I have ever seen them and probably due to the recent drop in the Apple TV price. I upgraded from Apple TVs a couple of years back and haven't looked back. Typical usage in our house revolves around Plex, Google Play, Youtube and Vevo. Plex lets you stream from your PC, Mac or Linux.

The big advantage over the Apple TV is the ability to choose which apps you want visible and the speed at which you can access those apps and then the streams. Everything is just a couple of clicks away. Background customisation is also a nice feature as is Miracast for Android devices. The streaming on the Rokus is flawless. They also work perfectly with Logitech universal remotes.

One small problem I had was with the Roku 3 and a Sony TV. I had to turn off the HDMI CEC feature on the TV to get the remote to work properly. Fortunately when using a universal remote that feature's not required (except that switching it off also switches off the audio return channel so I had to run an optical cable from my TV to my receiver). Other than that I would recommend them to everyone.

No need for a different power adapter just bend the pins on the US plug as the transformer it ships with handles 240v (although it doesn't explicitly state this on the transformer).

If you're interested in accessing the US channels then you just need to sign up to a VPN or DNS redirector service.

It's a great device, but there are a few "gotachas". First, you need an AC adapter to run it here, as the one that comes with it is only 110v. Second, to run it with a service like Unblock, you have to do a router level work around so that you can use Netflix, as Roku hardcoded Google DNS in it with the latest versions.

But, if you want to do a few work around, it's a great device. It supports Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon, as well as Plex. Apple TV doesn't run Amazon, so it gives you basically every US service you'd want. The best thing is the wifi remote; you can plug in headphones and listen. It's perfect for the bedroom late at night. It's also pretty snappy and the picture is solid. You should just be aware of the hoops you have to jump through to get it to work; it's just not plug and play.

I purchased two from Amazon in the last 5 months, and while they ship with US power bricks they do work on 240v (so just a $5 US -> AUS adapter is all you need).

Interestingly, the one I purchased last month comes with extra shortcut buttons on the remote for Netflix, Amazon, Rdio and Hulu, whereas the one from October last year doesn't.

Great streaming device, can't speak highly enough about it. The only thing that is isn't great for is playing local content unless you have a Plex or other DLNA server on your LAN.

      • Hmm, mine came w/ a 110v power supply. Just bought a 220-240v one on eBay and it works fine. If they are now shipping the Roku with dual voltage supplies, that's great.

Plex works great on it and it easy to setup. If you have PLex pass, you can try out their new beta channel.

For those that are American sports fans, MLB.TV works great on it; much better than my WDTV for example. I wish there was a NFL gamepass channel but I think you can stream that via Plex too.

I just bent the pins to fit in an australian socket, read that many people have done that, and works fine. I set mine up as UK rather than US, it's great to have the BBC iplayer. Just a pity can't have ABC iview as well (a plex channel for that would be ideal). There's a bunch of free internet tv channels available too, eg. found a cartoon channel with really old popeye, loony tunes, 3 stooges etc, some so old they are black and white only, the kids love it. The roku (with plex) is easily the best media device I've tried.

The Roku power supply says 110v but its actually 110/240 dual voltage

        • +1

          @lolmao: Correct.

They used to actually sell it and it stated 110/240 dual on the pack, then later rokus started stating 110 only but the model number on the power adapter didn't change at all.
I have two running with 110 packs with no worries as well.

        • @daskip: Guys, just need some advice here, was looking at purchasing a hand vac but put it off because they changed the power supply from 100-240V to just 110V. Is an adapter all I need or will I have to purchase a step down transformer? Putting the question up here because of the 110V talk, assuming they will both use the same.

        • @davidf:
I did the same thing using a pair of pliers to twist the pins to 45 degree angle. Works no probs.
Great media player. The only annoyance so far is DNS changes like UnblockUS/GetFlix, etc can't be done on the Roku itself. Has to be done on your router, therefore all your devices use a US DNS.

        • @davidf:

I have the ABC iview channel installed within Plex and it works fine, no HD but I believe that's the ABC lack of funding.

        • @davidf:
I did the same thing work no prob

        • @jdf: if the power cable it just a cable without the transformer and nothing's changed with the internals of the hand vac then it might still be the same? but I wouldn't risk it unless you're sure

        • @lolmao: thank you for the input. yeah, bit of a tricky situation there which is why I haven't ordered one in but I'm tired of waiting for them to release a similar model in Australia and let's not even get to pricing which will probably be 1/3rd the cost at amazon inclusive of shipping judging by the other models sold here.

    • I am currently using GetFlix with the DNS etc in my Billion router to get Netflix - is this all that is needed with the Roku or is there more to do in the above? I'm not adverse to changing anything if needed :)

      • +2

One of the last Roku firmwares (end of last year IIRC) hardcoded 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 (I think) into firmware, so you need to have your router not let those resolve. Otherwise, Netflix gives you a region error.

        Other devices do this: http://help.unotelly.com/support/articles/192836-why-do-i-ne…

        • It will be interesting when Netflix opens up here … it may not be needed to do that.

        • @Bagman:

It will if you want to watch content not on Netflix Australia still.

        • @Pobman:
I have US Netflix .. you think it will still need to be done ?

        • @Bagman:

Well yes… Otherwise you will get Australian content …

  • Getting ready to release the Roku 4K perhaps?

    • +1

Possibly. It seems to be on sale everywhere in the US at the moment

      • Yes I am tempted, I would like the Netflix Profiles that are missing from Roku 2 … and BBC iPlayer app will probably work better as it tends to grind to a halt after a while I find and needs me to go to Home and back in to iPlayer again… but I might well just sit on the fence and wait for the 4K to be released…

  • Purchased, thanks OP.

  • For people looking to use plex it is now $4.99 for the roku app; after 30 day trial is over. It is free for people with plexpass. You may I instead install rarflix on roku which is free and will play media on your local server.

    • Plus rarflix can do WOL which is nice to wake your plex server.

  • Thanks! Got 2!

  • Thanks, got one :)

For those who've previously bought one from the US, what adapter have you bought?

    • I've been using the provided one with an international adapter for months now. No issues to report :)

  • Thanks bought one!

    • +1

Just bend the pins on the power supply. Works fine

  • Has anyone received their order yet? Mine was due on 27 March but when I checked the tracking details today it says the package was being returned to Amazon because the content is not permissable for export. WTF?

Not like it's a boogie board bag full of hooch. Btw…that arrived today!

    • Received mine on the 24th ordered on 14th
