D-Link Wireless N 8-Port Router DIR-632 $19 + Delivery (~ $10) @ Harvey Norman

150

Looks nice a good price for a decent router that from what I can tell, can be easily flashed to dd-wrt for improved performance and functionality. Limit one per customer and Mwave have it for over $100.

Clearance item so purchase quickly to avoid disappointment (and other sale slogans we see thrown around by car salespeople).

      Ooops my bad… I pressed 8 instead of 9 :(

      Have fixed it…

Sorry its late and I'm falling asleep at the keyboard, but thought I'd post this as a fellow duty obligated ozbargainer before non ozbargainer people run into the special and start buying it :) They are not worthy! they are not worthy!

  • definitely very good router but shipping is dealbreaker for me..

    • Yeah. Is $15 delivery charge for me to post code 4701. That's almost as much as what this router is going for.

I bought one of these last time HN had them out for my parents. I had Internet company come out to set up my mum and dads Internet connection etc. they said they couldn't use this router. I did ring HN before buying it to check the details. Not sure who is telling me the truth 😏

      that doesnt mean anything

theres nothing wrong with this router, it even supports ddwrt

its just that it isnt 2007 any more

They may have said they couldn't use it to connect to the ISP - as it is not a modem. Most modems now are also a router, and they may not have wanted to put one more point of failure in the link if they are responsible for trouble-shooting.

A few years back, you would have just a modem, and your router would be the next link in line. The attraction of this one is that it can be flashed with a software -ddwrt - which enables access to many configuration options not normally added to the menu by manufacturers, as most customers would not only not want them, but be prevented from being able to usefully configure the modem, firewall, quota's, allowed users ect by sheer terror when they see the options.

If you are confident putting your current modem-router in " bypass" mode [ instructions aplenty in the whirlpool forum wikis] you can upgrade your current wi-fi to wireless N really cheaply, add a networked drive or printer and have far more control over your settings and users for pretty much the price of an 8 port dumb switch.

Apparently you can also add a 3G usb dongle according to one comment on this site:

      http://www.mwave.com.au/product/dlink-dir632-wireless-n300-r…

The [big] downside is that the USB port relies on a proprietary software called " shareport" to be able to use a networked drive or printer - and getting that to work in Linux is only an option if your are strongly into self-flagellation.

      • Thanks terrys 😃

Nice to see this router up for sale again, still using it as a client bridge to get WiFi to my desktop. Some instructions for DD-WRT configuration.

    • What's with client bridge ?
I currently run two of these routers purely as LANed switches with WiFi AP.
In my set-up both have the primary router plugged into their LAN 1 ports (rather than their WAN ports) and both are in the primary router's sub-net.

Should I be doing something different ?

  • I'm really keen on getting a router with usb so i can connect a 1.5tb portable hard drive to the network. I see this has one but noticed some shareport software is needed to access. I don't really want that, so assume I need a router with "samba direct access". Any recommendations? I saw in a whirlpool thread that the entry level dlink that does have this is the DIR-636L is it a decent one to purchase?

    • I'm not sure about that one, but I had no problems with the WD MyNet N750, one of a series the stores seem to drop fairly often. There are annoying features with them, such as inability to change admin name, no way to release IP leases without re-set, and it will sulk if you confuse it by swapping over a shared HD [funny that] but it toddles along happily once set up.

No DD-WRT tho :-/ You're stuck with the WD menu - and they should have got someone else to design it….

There are USB options with DD-WRT and this router is listed as one of those supported.

Sharing via CIFS directly from the router is possible but it does take some setting up - I used to do it before I installed a NAS. The DD-WRT wiki is quite detailed: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/USB_storage

    • This is a 100mbit router, the hard drive access will be slow.

It that is important get a gigabit router.

  • +1

Would be ok for good'o LAN parties! And play Counter Strike or Quake 3!

I want to slowly upgrade my devices to gigabit…otherwise i would have bought.

  • Postage cost kills it and there's no pickup option.

  • 8MB Flash, 32MB RAM - Can run Mega builds of DD-WRT. 400Mhz CPU. Can't complain for $19!

  • +1

I've had one for 3 years as my main router, running DD-WTS, and been very happy with it.
If not for $15 postage I'd definitely buy a second one, even without knowing what I'd do with it. With postage I might need a plan first.

  • I got one from last sale. Never used it though. LOL.

  • My OZB gene is tingling. Can you have too many APs ? lol
I use two of these with DD-WRT firmware and they've been excellent.

And yes, gigabit would be nice but to solve that I just have one of them hanging off a cheap 8 port D-Link gigabit switch. This combined was still much cheaper than an '8 port gigabit with WiFi' device.

    • you missed out on the $19 wdc 900 deal going a while back

i bought two, still got one in the package

sure its no ddwrt but its been solid for me with the latest firmware

      • Bugger, although I wanted 8 gigabit ports so had to add the switch to the DIR-632 router.

      • r u willing to sell the other one ? if yes please send me message…

  • Thanks! This is perfect timing :)

  • Can this model act as an AP (access point) without having to put DD WRT on it?

    • Yes, just plug the primary router into LAN port 1.
You can probably bridge the WAN to LAN but I didn't bother.

  • Can I stream movies to the tv with this router while a hard drive is plugged into it?
