Need Wi-Fi for 1 Day - Any Suggestions?

Hello,

I will be on the road (CBD only) for one day and need reliable WiFi for my laptop - 3GB data would be plenty (probably much less). I could do a personal hotspot with my iPhone (Vodafone 4G), but I don't find it very reliable.

I appreciate paying for one day of WiFi is not cost effective, but anyone have any suggestions?

Cheers,
JB

If your smartphone is not very reliable then what's to say that any other mobile wifi device would be?

agreed! If OP has enough data on his phone plan to sustain the data usage for the day, then there really is no difference in using the phone as a hotspot or buying a separate modem - unless he wants to use a completely different network.

It'll save on the setup costs of buying a new modem and sim card and then any unused data that might be purchased if it's just for that particualr day.

Buy a 4G or a cheap 3G modem (e.g Vodafone USB Extreme 3G prepaid, $39) from Coles Worths. Insert start pack sim. Then use your SIM when you run out of starter sim data.

The starter SIM I believe gives you 3GB of data for 30 days validity.

    Ummm hang out at mcdonalds

    • But in my experience that is slower and more unreliable than tethering with a phone.

    • hang out at a 'prospective' or 'populous' uni.. and ask one of the kids there to borrow their uni internet access id for some snacks or food or something haha.. if it's just one day and you are not moving around haha why not.. unis have one of the fastest and most cutting edge internet wireless infrastructures of anywhere it being a huge place to be and supporting hundreds if not thousands of young and bustling young students (oops lol haha I said young twice lmao.. lol) and also of course it being a place of learning and an educational institution and all (mmm man I miss my old uni μtorrenting days :) oh whoops I should not have said that.. I should NOT have said that.. haha lol :P)

Like , hey man, LOL lay off the weed haha, yeah dude…

        • haha yeah exactly ;) you catch on quick.. lol

  • What do you need to do? Where do you intend to use it?
Ad hoc phone data use may not consume much data?, so just use what is provided for that purpose with your provider Voda. Mine, Amaysim, provides it at 5c a mb and for the odd occasion that I have needed it worked out to be very cheap indeed. Just turn it off when you are finished.
If you insist on using your laptop then just buy one of the many dongle deals that are on offer from WW or Coles.

  • My suggestion is to get 3GB USB (Optus) from Officeworks or 5GB model deal posted here
AFAIK there are some stocks near Melbourne CBD. Otherwise if you have Regus membership get free WIFI from their Bourke St office.
