Limited nearly always means faulty stock thats been returned when I've called Officeworks before.

  • OP did you confirm stock anywhere?

  • They will backorder and honor the price, I think.

  • I think there is in Liverpool Carlton Taren Point all NSW got mine in Carlton.

  • -1

    Thnx

  • Dead cheap for 5GB of data even without the device.

    • Cheap, while predictable reaction against Voda after pre-paid vf recently began giving 2/7ths of the month away free. Make it pretty meh' in my book - but perhaps if evolved R208 (Huawei) were not your cup of tea (not on discount), or not with usable speeds - the good news unlocked means this one's ready to try the other company.

    • -1

Sure you can. Just activate roaming on your mobile phone….but be prepared to re-mortgage your house.

      • A prepaid SIM wont roam.. nor will a network provider wont unlock a prepaid sim to roam (maybe with a big fat deposit).

  • +1

Good deal if you can find one. All SA stores showing the old limited stock - please call.

  • This is a new Huawei model it is not old stock. In fact it is a current model still showing on Optus own website as Optus themselves are still taking orders for this online.

  • Not much use if you live in one of the inner Melbourne suburbs that still has crap or non-existent Optus coverage…

    • If you want it for the device you could sell the sim and probably break even.

      • possibly, but will it work with Telstra sims ?

        • -1

Wouldn't see why not the last deals on $19 Vodafone Huawei device came unlocked. If its locked it probably wont cost too much to unlock it (bagman).

Worth a go buying it and fiddling with the APN settings and a Telstra Sim.

        • +1

          @Kaboda:

          Wouldn't see why not

Telstra use different frequencies to Optus for 3G

        • @jv:

The model I was referring to was Vodafone-Pocket-WiFi-3G-R207 when coles express was selling them for $19. I tested this unit with a Telstra sim and it worked fine. Not too sure the details on this Optus one.

It looks pretty much the same, but you need to I guess check the frequencies.

        • @Kaboda:
What would make you think Optus supply unlocked devices, just because Vodafone do?

The device is set to be locked or not by the network, not by the modem manufacturer, selling to many providers.

Vodafone have provided a number of unlocked modems & phones that are free to unlock.

Always best to find out unlock price before purchase.

As jv rightly points out, Optus and Telstra use different frequencies. Changing the device APN settings won't help that.

        • +8

@brucefromaustralia: I got one at lunch time and it is unlocked. Works with my Telstra prepaid sim.

        • @ozscharfschutze:
Great! Gives flexibility to use any data SIMs on sale.

I was searching for unlock process. Some telcos overseas lock these.

        • @ozscharfschutze:

Thanks for that confirmation. I wouldn't see how just because this device is from Optus not from Vodafone that it would any much different.

        • @Kaboda:
As I said it is the Telco that decides if the product will be unlocked, not the manufacturer. They purchase from the manufacturer, who adds logos, firmware and lock codes as the Telco requires.

I was questioning your faulty logic, not whether the device is locked or not.

And external appearance of a complex device is not the best way to assess what it can do (what frequencies it operates on).

You were right about suggesting it being unlocked, for the wrong reason.
But when there are only 2 possible states, it was a lucky guess.

        • +1

          @brucefromaustralia:

Bruce I've bought a range of these devices Telstra Optus and Vodaphone and I've noticed one trend. None of them are locked anymore.

"Wouldn't see why not the last deals on $19 Vodafone Huawei device came unlocked. If its locked it probably wont cost too much to unlock it (bagman)."

I said if it was locked it wouldn't cost much to unlock it. I never for one moment claimed that this device was unlocked. No where in that quote did I say it was unlocked. I said hint there was a good chance it would be.

And someone has confirmed it is.

        • @Kaboda:
And that is why it is best to wait for proof, rather than speculate. In those recent modem deals (like the R207/8), I am usually the one providing that proof.

It is far better if people buy based on proof than speculation or what the outside appearance tell of its inner workings.

Telstra seems to still be supplying mainly locked modems. I provided a free way of unlocking for a deal I posted.

        • @Kaboda:
Although this unit looks like a R207, it is a lighter spec unit with 4 hours battery life against 10 hours of the R207.

So looks can be deceiving ;-)

That short battery life on this budget model is a reason to avoid these, in comparison with R207 & even better R208 models, which are bound to go on sale again, as has happened previously. I bought the R208 for $19 at Coles last year.

The only advantage of this deal seems to be the higher included data.

        • @Kaboda:
"It looks pretty much the same"… this unit has removable back with access to battery & SIM where as R207/8 is a sealed unit, battery is only 1150mAh against 1500mAh in R207 & whopping 3000mAh in R208! No wonder it only gets up to 4 hours browsing.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Didn't realise the R208 had such a big battery. I am currently using a MF90 I find the battery isn't too bad on it and its only 2000mah. It lasts me roughly half a day on light usage.
Get's pretty hot though which is the disadvantage.

I can fiddle with the APN settings but I haven't chucked a non telstra sim to check if its unlocked.

        • @Kaboda:
There may be other advantages of the R208 over the R207 discussion in deal. The major external difference is the LCD display.

Which deal did you get the MF91 from?

I've posted a free (but a little complex) unlock process in my MF91 $49 deal - worked for me after experimenting with different port combinations on the PC.

Ones in that Australia Post deal were supplied locked. Inserting non Telstra carrier SIM will display SIM LOCKED, if locked - an easy test.

I unlocked & sold mine for $60 & used the 5GB SIM. Decided I didn't need it as was using a $79 unlocked 4G Huawei G526 phone for data.

And despite looking similar, this deal's "mini" modem is smaller, lighter, has removable back cover, but is less useful than a R207 or R208.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Many thanks for that! I'll down dccrap, dc unlocker once. And I know what you mean by being able to detect the modem. It can be a right pain in the arse.

I'll check tonight to see if its unlocked.

        • @Kaboda:
Note - it uses a cracked version of that software to get unlocking free! Good luck.

Happy to see you gave my MF91 deal a + back in August ;-)
          Those devices do get hot.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

Haha that's cus I bought one around then.

It's been following me around since last year, I used an Amaysim PAYG for my phone sim making calls using telecube.

        • +1

          @Kaboda:
For phone calls, I've been with Pennytel for about 10 years & too lazy to change (mainly for 8c untimed calls to landlines, no monthly fee). I tend to use that to call home when overseas on free WiFi. I'm away a lot - always for pleasure.

The data SIM is in my 4G phone, so can use voip on data for calls anytime. Find a slim phone with data SIM handy for accessing internet on it, voip calls, etc on 1 device, rather than carrying extra modem. Rarely make calls on normal phone SIM.

Have unlimited usually fast, free wifi at Regus Business Lounges around the world (OzBargain deals), so torrent movies, upload photos, etc to phone & make calls when in local office.

With a recent Kmart $39 Samsung camera deal (16MP, 12x zoom, WiFi) it sends photos automatically to my phone. So I can upload or send photos from it.

Otherwise I use Telsta SIM in 2nd phone (currently costing $2/yr with 400 minutes of calls, from Woolies $1 Telstra Starter Pack deal). See my Telstra Wiki for details.

        • @brucefromaustralia:

What do you do for SMS ?

Thanks for the Telstra Wiki will check that out.

        • @Kaboda:
          SMS - I remember those.
I rarely need to send them.

Almost no one I know uses them any more.
I received 1 from a person I met interstate last month, still haven't replied. She doesn't even have an email address, just a Nokia phone!

There are / were free SMS sites. I used to use those.

Now use email. messenger, WhatsApp etc.

But my Voip & Telstra accounts have paid SMS services. I'm too cheap to use them.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
I am the same I hate it when people sms me but it's hard to convince them to use Google hangout or whatsapp. That's where I found that I couldn't just go on a data plan.

        • +1

Anyone remember? Was posted here on OzB, but I can't find it now as a seperate post

I wonder if these modem routers can be used for anything cool like acting as wireless repeaters or something else?

  • +1

Thanks OP got one at North Ryde NSW. I use these when I am on holidays because the kids always burn through my phones bandwidth with their iPads

  • How much does it cost to recharge?

    • Why would you bother, except to roll over unused data? It would be cheaper to buy more than 1 (if you can find any) & swap the SIMs over monthly.

There are often other data SIM deals, like the regular Vodafone 3GB for $9 with USB modem at Coles. Thats why unlocking is important. Reportedly unlocked :-)

  • +1

None showing as available within 15 km from Brisbane CBD ;-) All show Limited - please call.

  • +2

I've now tried Telstra, Optus and Vodafone over the last 6 months with these cheap modem deals. I found Optus the slowest and had most dropouts. Telstra best, but Voda surprisingly usable. Of the 2 modems I have, I like the Vodafone Pocket Extreme over Telstra's MF91 despite MF91 being (relatively slow) 4G. MF91 doesn't let you view SMS. The Vodafone Pocket Extreme was unlocked right out of the box and the software you can download to use with it is nice. 3GB $9 Voda sims seem to be the best bang for buck when you can get the deal.

    • Those problems may be related to your location.

For data in different devices (3G & 4G) from Telstra, Vodafone (& Optus a few years back), in my home - Vodafone is best. Telstra has more areas covered, but often slower even comparing 4G.

I've owned a few Pocket WiFi devices including the Extreme. I like them, but don't want to carry the Extreme in my pocket - it's heavy.

I'm currently using a $79 unlocked 4G Huawei G526 as a modem. Works well, and can carry one device for internet access.

      • +1

I have no doubt it does vary by area and coverage but this was my overall experience for several places in Western Sydney suburbs, plus Martin place and a couple of places on the Central coast too.

  • I think I got the last one from Wetherill Park.

  • Dont the new models all have LCD displays ?

Unlike this Optus branded Huawei E5251s-2

    • It's a budget model. The lack of display is a small issue, compared to lack of battery life!

  • Just bought one of these last week at kmart for $29, can anyone confirm the size/type of the external antenna connection?
Its under the back cover, looks to be a IP-9 connection which is relatively rare compared to CRC9 or TS9. Taken this modem to work, and connection quality/speeds are horrendous, unsure if its just saturation on the tower or connection.

Funnily enough speeds connected to DC-HSPA+ are terrible (strength seems ok), 3G speeds seem better (but it always goes to DC-HSPA+). So im guessing tower congestion?

    • Are you sure it's the same one? $29 is not a bad price..

      • Yep, same model. Kmart had it for $29 in store on special. Normal price was $49 i think.

  • North Ryde shows stock online, but they dont have it either..

  • +1

Cheers! Just grabbed one from Lewisham, Sydney.

  • +1

Bought two from their High point store. These modems are unlocked and work well with Vodafone sims. Cheers.

  • Picked one up from Doncaster store. Had a couple left according to the bloke who works there.

  • +1

Thanks OP. Bought last one from Keswick SA. Croydon & Marion had no stock.

    • I bought from the Marion Store yesterday for $25 with 5 gig included. I needed the data not the modem. There were more in the cupboard behind the cash registers, about 4 or 5 but I only got a glance. It appears that the deal is back although that is the price I saw online before heading over there.

  • sigh…where were these deals when i really needed them!

  • +1

    What's battery life like?

    • That's what I was wondering.

Up to 4 hours browsing time - Optus lol! That's a fail.
My ancient Huawei Pocket WiFi 2 have that battery life! They were slower units, but light weight and compact in comparison.

Considering OP says it is 'light weight' - compared to what? a previous Optus offering was said to be very heavy. A longer life battery is a major contributor to weight in these units, so beware of light modems, unless you just want it powered most of the time!

The similar but hefty 132g Huawei R207/8 Pocket WiFi Extreme has "up to 10 hours of battery life" cnet review. Those Vodafone units were recently $19 with 3GB at Coles. (The R208 model has a LCD screen and better features than the R207.)

As kaboda has noted, (from the photo) the unit looks externally identical to a Huawei R207.
And is battery life similar? Absolutely not!
So is it lighter than that unit's 132g? Probably, given the much shorter battery life.

      • +1

Seems like a budget model of the recently similar priced and popular Huawei R207 & R208 models, with a worse battery. I wonder how the other specs measure up.
Deals (expired but may return): Coles Target

In comparison to those earlier $19 deals with 3GB, only the 5GB data SIM seems worth the extra money in this deal, if you can use it. (3GB in 30 days is enough for me, especially as Vodafone SIMs don't have expiry date. Also, Optus reception is poor and slow in my location.)

The battery in R207/8 cannot be replaced without disassembly of the unit. Some have complained about the SIM slot in those models, as SIM can be difficult to remove. May be similar with this unit.

Glad OW had no stock near me ;-)

        • Manual shows this unit has removable back cover, giving access to battery & SIM. That is different to the R208.

Can't find a date for manual, but it refers to Windows XP!
And the Huawei logo on the manual is not a current version.

    • After a lot of searching, battery is only 1150mAh against 1500mAh in R207 & whopping 3000mAh in R208! No wonder it only gets up to 4 hours browsing.

  • Very little information available on this unit. The manual is available for downloading from Optus.

A search of Huawei site found no match for E5251. Is that actually a Huawei model number, or a code for a cut down budget Huawei R207?

So strange there is so little information given OP stated "This is a new Huawei model it is not old stock.".

    • Specs from mobile site of alibaba.com!

      Huawei E5251 Technical Specifications:

      • DC-HSPA+/HSPA+/UMTS/HSUPA 900/2100MHz
      • Peak download speed to 42.2mbps, upload speed to 5.76mbps
      • GPRS/EDGE 850/900/1800/1900MHz
      • SMS function
      • 802.11 b/g/n
      • MicroSD slot for up to 32GB
      • HSPA+ DL 21.1Mbps/UL 5.76Mbps
      • HSDPA DL 14.4Mbps/UL 5.76Mbps
      • Battery: 1150mAh
      • Dimension: 90 * 57 *11mm 90 * 57 *11mm
      • Weight: 68g
      • Support Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows7, Windows 8, Mac OS X 10.5.x, 10.6.x and later version

Huawei E5251 is like the previous model Huawei E5756 and Vodafone R208, they all support peak download speed to 42.2mbps.

So battery is only 1150mAh against 1500mAh in R207 & whopping 3000mAh in R208! No wonder it only gets up to 4 hours browsing.

I wonder if weight includes battery?

  • For $25 with 5 gigs really the device is gifted whether the battery 1150mAh or 3000 mAh
Nowhere now will you pay $25 get 5 gigs and still get a new device on top.

    • +1

I notice the careful use of the word 'now'. True ;-)

But it is better to be informed about the serious limitations of this budget design modem. I'd just like a better gift than this ;-)

That's still $5/GB including device if available at an OW nearby. None within many km of me in Brisbane.

Coles Vodafone 3GB deals were $3/GB with unlocked USB modem or $6.33/GB with a much better unlocked modem with 10 hour battery life, LCD display and other features. Those deals are likely to return given recent multiple past deals.

If you really need all of that 5GB in 30 days, buying multiple $9 3GB Coles deals was the way to go, as there was availability & no expiry on SIM. When finished with SIM, insert next. I've got over a year's supply.

Even Woolies offered 50c/GB Telstra deal before Christmas ($1 Starter Pack with $30 grocery purchase). No device, but 2GB & $30 groceries for $31. I stocked up, but mainly for $30 credit on phone or Play credit.

I recommended stocking up on those deals at the time.

Vodafone were providing 4G Pocket WiFi modems a few months ago, to post paid users. So cost about $40 for much better & faster modem with 5GB on 2 accounts, cancelling after a month on each account.

I posted a Telstra 4G MF91 modem deal with 5GB for $49 & sold the modem for $60 after free unlock - leaving me with a 5GB SIM & $11 profit for my effort. Could do similar with many of these deals.

There have been plenty of recent deals on modems better than this, but maybe not right now as you say.

But seems a budget, older spec modem.

People in these deals often say they buy these deals just for the data, or to maybe use the modem someday. So if you don't need the data or modem right now, better to hold out for a better deal.

    • The only better modem I know that is reduced at the moment is the Vodafone R207 with 3GB at Coles for $29.

Certainly not the value of previous $19 deals, or data in this deal, but a far better modem with 10 hour browsing against 4 for this deal.

Expires tonight. Not available at OW for price match discount.

Best to wait for all those better deals.

  • Coles list this as
Huawei E5251 Mini WiFi Modem $49
Battery Life: 200 hours while WiFi is off
Forgetting to say the limited battery life when in use!

    • +1

Lol when off I expect 2000 hours lol

      • Even I hadn't read it that way. I assume they meant to say in Standby, with no internet use.

        • It's not even that - it's battery life when no device is connected via WiFi! Wow! That useless stat must have excited the marketing team ;-)

  • Every store in North Brisbane shows limited stock so I can't be bothered. As a matter of interest would the supplied sim give 4G speeds if put in a 4G device?

    • Yes, posted Brisbane availability yesterday & again 30 minutes before you, just above.

Optus data SIMs should all be 4G. Only the modem is limited to 3G+.

I'm using a data SIM from one of the recent $9 Coles Vodafone 3GB + 3G+ USB modem deals, in a 4G modem (actually a cheap 4G phone). So there are often cheaper ways to buy data.

I think it's only the resellers of major Telco services that limit data to the older 3G network.

      But always check before buying!

  • thanks OP, bought one from Chadstone Vic, just in time for my overseas visitors arrive in 2 days!

  • Picked one up from Old Guildford OW, waiting for optus to install 90 dollar cable broadband so this will keep me updated with all the ICC happenings meanwhile.
Does anybody know how can I log in to change settings? I want to change default
    SSID and password
    Thanks OP
Update : The default username and password is "admin" in case somebody has difficulty logging in.

  • Thanks OP. Staying away from home for few weeks, every Mb of data counts. This 5 Gb will be a bonus to my Prepaid $99 for 25 Gb with Vodafone and I can use that SIM in this modem.

Got one from Hornsby Office works and have it running. Can anyone confirm how I can check the usage and balance of 5 Gb available. When I tried to register the phone number provided upon activation, in My Optus Site/Apps I am informed that I cannot register that number..

  • Merged from Optus Huawei E5251 3G Wi-Fi Dongle with 5GB Data for $25 @ Officeworks

    Similar to the previous deal
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/185533

There seemed to be some interest. Picked one up yesterday.

    But no signup etc.
    Expiry same as before 30days

    • Nice are the network locked? (The similar Voda ones weren't)

    • I bought one. It works well so far. After actived, only 30 days available, then you need recharge it.

    • No locked. However,I put the Aldi SIM in it, it shows me 2G ??? I guess it only supports the Frequency of Optus, so needn't lock, but like locked. :/)

      • You changed the APN via the dashboard, right? Other thing is possible incompatible frequencies with this unit and Aldi.
