    • JB Broadmeadows wouldn't price match against your receipt.
The price was too low, so it had to be checked with the manager, who said, "sorry, no"

    • +1

Thanks for that but we need permission to access, I sent you my request ;)

    • Lol you got the wrong one at jbs!

      • Yup! Realized it after I opened the box lol. Its OK though… Still cheaper than regular price.

      • +2

Isn't the E5372T better than this MF91 though, on account of the additional 900Mhz support on LTE? Or am I mistaken?

        • Yes.

    • What model did you actually get from JBs?
The clearance model at Australia Post is a ZTE MF91.
Your receipt says E6372T. Can't find any details online about that, except maybe a typo for Huawei E5372T, which is the Telstra replacement product for the ZTE MF91.

      • Oh, that's a 5 on the receipt. I guess I should put my glasses on.

        • yes its Huawei E5372T. not sure if i can get it unlocked though

    1. What do you do with these things? I guess no one can be bothered to take them around instead of using the data from the normal smartphone?
    2. When the data is used up, do you just sell the device?
    3. If I want to use these for travelling across Australia for a few months, do I just buy 6 devices for 6 months for example, so that I can use one per month ( 30 day expiry )?

    Cheeeers

    • I use the old iPad plan. Have used Pocket WiFi 2 devices up to now. (Was 3GB for $30 credit bought with $10/15 Starter Packs. With a Telstra SIM you can transfer credit to a phone or data SIM.) I still have a few $10 packs to use for $220/month call cap & transfer $29 credit to my iPad or another phone SIM. One of many options, depending on your requirements.

See Telstra Starter Packs Guide - Still under construction for tips on cheap data & calls.

There were $9 Vodafone 4G 3GB data SIMs recently at Coles, but no good out west.

  • +1

    It's a good deal.

Btw, the dude at the shop told me that old customer can still purchase the 12GB for $180 if purchasing from the device.

Note: I just checked and it's true. If you go to https://prepaidrecharge.telstra.com/prepaidrecharge/, it's still $180 for 12GB. I'm guessing only works for old customer, not sure how old though.. ok that's a lame joke!

  • Are there models that can have more simultaneous connections?

    • +1

Latest Telstra modem connects 10 devices. $149 with same 5GB (30 days).

  • I bought one of these and have found it gets very hot.

When charging it was almost too hot to leave your hand on it. It charged for several hours without getting to fully charged. I unplugged it & let it cool down then turned it on while not charging and it got hot agai. Taking it apart seems like it's the battery generating the heat.

Can someone else with one comment on how hot theirs gets?

    • Not sure about this model, but the other 4G wifi modems i've seen have also gotten nearly too hot to hold.

    • I think you have faulty / incorrectly installed battery. Sounds like it is not charging, just heating.

Mine charged (straight out of the box) in less than 1 hour. Charging started at 1200mA, dropping to 120mA before unit stopped charging. No heat at all, but battery wasn't completely dead. Battery would be replaced under warranty.

    • +1

Most likely a faulty battery! I only say this because the one we purchased earlier this year had to stay on constant charge. The battery was just about dead out of the box and they were pretty quick to say 'Yep, give it back". My only gripe was with the Telstra shop as you don't get a replacement, you don't get a loan wifi device, you get to wait another 2 weeks without it!!!

  • None of stores at my aera,I had been 4 stores today,WTF

  • Seems no more in metro Melbourne. I think the staff said: Warrnambool, Melton, maybe Sunshine, Altona (north?)

    • Over 100 + votes & was only about 200 showing in stock on their system. The maths is not good for finding in major centres even at time deal posted.

      • +1

There were a couple in Melbourne CBD, but I just happened to pick the wrong post office at 4:50pm and couldn't get to the other in time :(

        • Stock systems are often incorrect. I ask AP staff to call shop to check stock & hold. Saves disappointment & wasted trip. Good luck.

  • There are:
3 left at South Yarra as I bought one this morning.
    2 South Melbourne
    2 Prahran
    1 Port Melbourne
    1 North Melbourne

    • stock level for north melbourne is wrong. they have zero.

  • I'm selling mine as I decided to recontract my tablet plan with Helstra. Anyone wants it will get extra battery and charger for extra $20 ($23 that I bought from ebay. Sim isn't activated yet.

    • location ? and which model?
and can I buy it without the extra battery?

      • Melbourne. I bought the MF91. Chuck in extra $10, I'll throw the spare battery and desktop charger.

  • +1

Thanks OP, nice finding but I cannot any store that has it in Sydney. Can someone please share a store in Sydney that has this modem at this price thanks?

  • I'm on old "iPad" prepaid & found Telstra charged me 5 times the rate (5c/MB instead of 1c) for using 4G instead of 3G! Now using my ancient Pocket WiFi 2, cost has dropped back to 1c/MB.

As I only download movies etc at the "office" on free fast WiFi, the speed drop won't affect me much.

Back to buy a cheap unlocked 3G+ modem for me.

    • Correction: I have lost my cheap data after using this 4G device. Telstra detected I had broken t&c to only use in iPad. Now being charged at 5 times price, so no more cheap data :-(

Will try my best groveling to Telstra to reinstate my rate (unavailable to new connections) or transfer my credit to my phone.

Lucky I have a year's worth of Vodafone, but coverage is poorer.

      • +1

We're still putting you on suicide watch, Bruce…

Even if you manage to see your previous rate returned, you should probably still update that (sterling) Telstra 'cheap data, how-to' wiki page of yours.

I'll just cordially suggest that the sentence: 'Very-vigilant, minefield-laying, sneaky-mongrel, ever-the-ultimate-telco-ripoff-merchant' might be appropriately incorporated somewhere…

        • At 5c/MB, I can't go on. Sob :-(

At least I can confirm Telstra can check if you are using your iPad plan on a non-iPad device - probably by the faster speed.

I'll add that to the Wiki, sometime. But Wikis can be added to by anyone (hint).

          @brucefromaustralia:

What type SIM did you use?

I have used the 3GB idiotPad starter packs in MF91's and getting the full 3GB without any problems.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
Hint not taken! That wiki is - justly - your baby, Bruce.

Best of luck with the call center, when you give them a ring.
Report back with the result, + or - .

        • @VVV:
I have the iPad plan by changing an ordinary Starter Pack into an iPad plan before 1/7/14 to get a recharge equivalent to 3GB (0.98c/MB) (but have credit in cash, not 3GB data). That can still be done, but the recharge only buys 2GB (1.5c/MB).

Explained in the Guide to Telstra Starter Packs Wiki someone is supposed to be writing.

If you have the white iPad Starter Pack, it includes a 3GB data pack, so may not be affected, but similar "thou shalt not use in any device but the sacred ipad" still applies.

Been using for last 18+ months. Previously when I transferred $10 I got 1GB OK.
But now using 100MB is charged at $5 (5c/MB). Previously it was $1 :-[

        • @brucefromaustralia:

OK, that explains it. Got my drawer full of the 3GB white starter packs.
Cleaned up DS the last time they had them on spezial.

        • @Tas:
          Still "in discussions" with Telstra.

As the increase in data charges could either be a penalty for using a non-iPad device (my breach of t&c), or a Telstra mistake when topping up my credit with CreditMe2u service - I am pushing the investigation into Telstra's possible mistake rather than admit to any breach ;-)

Call Center & Telstra Shop staff know nothing about CreditMe2u topups, incorrectly insisting they are recharges. No one has been able to answer my queries. I end up educating them :-(

They don't know of the discounted data rates of iPad Starter Packs (0.98c), insisting the correct data rate for them is up to 25c/MB.

There are no notes on my file to explain the increase in data charges. But it will possibly conclude I am being penalised as set out in the "Our Customer Terms" pdf p46 clause 5.25.
The charges for Telstra Pre-Paid iPad service in clause 5.21 are available when the SIM card included in your starter kit is inserted in the Apple iPad device. If the SIM card is inserted into any other device, any data usage will be charged in accordance with the latest Telstra Pre-Paid Mobile Broadband pricing set out in clause 4 above.

5.21 We charge you the following rates for your Telstra Pre-Paid iPad service in Australia. Your data rate and effective allowance are determined by your most recent recharge amount.
That recharge rate starts from 5c/MB for a $5/10 recharge - my penalty amount.

So I am being charged at over 5 times the correct amount either due to discovery I was not using an iPad or because someone stuffed up my CreditMe2u topup as a $10 "recharge" rather than a transfer of credit at old data rate.

Telstra investigation into my complaint is continuing. No call from Telstra expected any time soon.

But I have been able to extract 1GB 30 day data pack and extension of my "grandfathered" iPad access period for another 2 months - all FREE.

        • @brucefromaustralia:
A couple of things from my own experience (albeit not specifically with Telstra staff), that might be of assistance to you.
I pride myself on being pretty persuasive on the phone and have seen a number of rules bend for me as a result. One particular call ended with a lovely lady 'Yes' network tech volunteering to fiddle my account settings, which then gave me unrestricted 'postpaid-only' APN access on a 'prepaid' service. Naughty on her part, godsend for me - instant doubled data-speed…

If you find yourself ringing-up on multiple occasions to find the 'right' call-centre worker (or, in your case, even one who vaguely knows what they're doing!), try presenting each time with a slightly different problem first-up, then get around to the other stuff.
I reckon that way - assuming they look at the notes on your account - you are less likey to be perceived as a 'problem' caller.

If the aforementioned 'different' problem happens to warrant a transfer to tech-support - potentially all the better.

In my experience (relative to that had with the regular call-centre workers), the tech-support staff can still, often, and are more inclined to, fix the 'other' problems you may be experiencing…

Bruce, regardless of who you get on the line (and assuming - would be understandable if it requires several calls - that you end-up frustrated and inclined otherwise) (to murder…) don't forget to speak slowly and to summon your best baritone. Can work wonders.

Best of luck - without the need for the murder part…

        • @Tas:
Hey, you do know how to work the system. I didn't think anyone would even see my response - let alone this quickly. Thanks. Very supportive. So can I be taken off suicide watch?

There has been no real problem dealing with Telstra & I have the experience of escalated one Telstra case to the TIO, being paid compensation along the way.

It's just that no one I have talked to had any idea what has gone wrong, or how Telstra's CreditMe2u or iPad Plans work. They all try to help, but don't have the knowledge or training in the area I am asking about. At a Telstra Shop, the manager Googled CreditMe2u, to find a major source was a certain OzBargain Wiki :-)

The case was escalated to Technical support in the first call. It has now gone way past that. I escalated it there, calmly reassuring staff that they knew their areas, but it was best for both of us to escalate the case to someone with knowledge of this specialised field.

I have supported very influential people (e.g. Government minister), trained staff & lectured at uni when I was still an undergrad without a degree, and my sometimes soothing baritone voice you recommend I use, is actually trained in hypnosis, so I usually get what I want in cases like this.

Certainly not going to upset myself over a few cents credit. Besides the compensation so far is far more than what I am complaining about.

I'm treating this case as learning which is adding to the knowledge base of the Wiki ;-) There's a new section When things go wrong using CreditMe2u for iPad Plan - an ongoing saga.

        • +1

          @brucefromaustralia:
Just generally - dealing with telcos - we're all part of that saga, but certainly by way of the wiki (that sounds like an incantation), your clueless-Telstra-employee-edumacation warrants you catching-a-break.

So can I be taken off suicide watch?

I'll leave that as a decision for The Mods.

(washes hands just in case things go pear-shaped.)

        • @Tas:
Telstra still hasn't even understood problem. Yesterday's call from Case Manager - can't even find Telstra mobile terms & wants me to help her!! I'll do that when they put me on the payroll.

It looks like the deal is still valid, just managed to get one from Castle Hill NSW Postshop, attached is the receipt if anyone wants to price match elsewhere…

    http://tinypic.com/r/2vmeb81/8

    • It's still valid, but not in the quantity that deems this as a deal.

I just went to my local corporate who told me there are less than 20 left in stock around the country.

      • +1

10 is often cited as the requirement for posting deal. Never heard of minimum number to keep deal active.

Still that means about 200 sold :-)

Assume those who want them have already found one or given up searching.

When it runs out, feel free to click Report & tell the MODs. But given poor stock systems, there will be phantom stock on the Australia Post system.

        • Given the poor stock system you can bet your life theres under 10 left then.

I would say deal is over.

Just got around to a free unlock. Pretty easy using a cracked version of DC-unlocker (dccrap - Google to find & scan for viruses), a PC to plug modem into with as few USB ports as possible, and some patience.

You may need to change port settings until it automatically does a second detection of modem. My desktop PC had too many USB ports to change to find the correct set up. Worked easily on Win8.1 laptop with 2 ports to choose from.

First modem will load drivers etc & open browser with Telstra modem dashboard. Password is the password. Close that.

    From DC-unlocker window
(Inserted Vodafone SIM. Modem displayed SIM LOCK)

    Select manufacturer as ZTE datacards.
    Model as Unknown
    Click magnifying glass button.

First pass did not detect (that's usual)
Then it changed its setting to Auto Detect after a while, and detected modem.

(If you do not see this, change the port settings. With only 2 USB, thankfully there are only 4 combinations.)

    First pass:
    model - unknown ZTE modem
    SECOND pass:
    Found modem: "MF91"
    Model: unknown
    IMEI: XXXX..XX
    Firmware: ….
    SIM Lock Status: Locked

Then pull down the Unlocking tab at top right, click unlock:
    Unlocking, please wait…
    Card unsuccessfully unlocked !
Credits left: (lots - it's cracked!)

Don't forget to change the APN settings for your Telco in the modem dashboard, otherwise it won't connect. Getting 4G fine on Vodafone.
