My Sad Break up with Coffee Capsules

So, my second caffitaly capsule broke down a couple of days ago. I had only had this one for about six months, the first one lasted over two years. I am cautious to blame the company, because we mostly used it by refilling capsules with fresh ground beans. It's possible that the ground was too fine, and maybe wrecked the machine?
I have a problem with the waste created by these plastic capsules, as well as being charged at least 2x the price for the amount of coffee as compared to a 250g bag for example. Thus the re-using.
I loved my morning coffee (and subsequent) capsule, but now having 2 machines break down on me, I am done.

I have ordered an aerobie, deciding I will try plunger coffee's in the morning instead. At the moment I am using my drip ( $10 from ozbargain a Cpl years ago) and it's pretty good. Not as good as the pressure capsule, but decent.

Looking forward to the aerobie arriving, no messy capsules, descaling, leaking etc. And if I buy free trade beans, I am thinking could be a better alternative for me.

Goodbye capsules. Some good timesšŸ˜Š

Nespresso won't honour their warranty if you use pods different than theirs. They claim they can tell by the particular pattern of damage left on their machines by nespresso pods.

Correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it law that the place of purchase must take back faulty goods and provide full refund.
Can't be sure if Gerry or Lionel are nespresso technicians though.

Of course they must take back the goods, but they can then deny warranty base on misuse of the product. Thats like taking a car back for warranty that you put diesel in that should have had unleaded. Yes they will take it back but once they work out what you did they will revoke the warranty and you will be out of pocket. However I'm not sure how they can tell with an capsule machine and if they build something in to tell. I know it mobile phones they have a small strip of paper that changes color when wet to easily tell if you just dropped it in water and trying to claim it is faulty.

Just checked the Nespresso Warranty page and I have a problem with their clause: "The Nespresso warranty will not cover defects caused by a non-genuine Nespresso capsule or resulting from accident, misuse, improper maintenance, or normal wear and tear."

How can they tell if the defect was caused by using non genuine capsules? The same defect could just as easily cause a failure while using genuine capsules.

Maybe they should try pricing their capsules a bit more reasonably, instead of using fear tactics.

I have had a Nespresso machine for over 2 years now, and have used non-genuine capsules (mainly LOR) most of the time, with no issues, and I find the taste 90% as good as the original capsules, at nearly half the price (I stock up when they are on special).

    • See my post above for the reason..

Why are we all talking about Nespresso warranty when Caffitaly is a competitor brand? Just an aside?

We've had a Caffitaly machine running solidly for about a year now. Have heard a few stories of machines being returned though. Hope ours lasts 2 years. If it's lasts 3 I will consider that a pretty good investment seeing as I got it for about $50. We don't reuse capsules though, so perhaps this did contribute to it failing. Who knows.

Just ordered an aerobie myself… only heard of it from another post yesterday. Actually, I had to buy 2 to save $8 postage.
They sound pretty good, thought I'd take one to work.
Also decided what to give as gifts for hard-to-buy-for people who like coffee :)

  • Mmmmmmmm. Coffee…

The aerobie is awesome, I use it at work!!! Make sure you get the steal filter and then it's all totally reusable. I have an aldi coffee machine at home but it's so depressing throwing all that plastic away each day.

  • Update: Received my aerobie. Still trying to work out the coffee ratio. At first, I used 2 scoops as per instructions and it was intense, I think 1 and bit scoops suits me better. (It's a pretty generous sized scoop) Also, unlike the web images, the plastic on mine is dark, tinted so it's harder to see the water as I'm filling.
    Overall, I am pleased.
I love the simple design, and coffee tastes great. Bodied and smooth.
Its difficult to say, whether I prefer the capsule. I feel like the aerobie is more 'personalised.'

I can 'tweak' the process to my own taste, without needing to be a barista.

  • I think your machine definitely broke from using "recycled" capsules!

On another note, I think you can now recycle pods (well Nepresso pods at least) at their boutique store in Sydney.

I've used the Nepresso warranty service before and it is wonderful. They send you a replacement machine whilst yours is getting fixed. My machine wouldn't turn on at all, when I got it back - not only did the machine now turn on, they also replaced my milk frother - all free of charge!
