Cheapest Way to Get Back to Oz from South America

Hey Guys

Im currently in South America and will most likely need to get back to Melbourne at some stage this year and was wondering if any one has any tips of how to do this on the cheap, time is no problem just really dont want to pay for some ridiculous one way ticket. So any help would be great and i'm quite happy to take some crazy 5 city stop over too.

cheers

David

Just whatever you do, don't come by boat. Not even Ozbargain can save you then.

      • It'll be fine, Tony Abbott will be voted out of office by then.

      1. Build a big square wooden box - a few pallets will achieve this - leave the top open
      2. Stock up on baked beans, tinned fruit and bottled water
      3. Get a friend to nail the top on … With you inside
      4. Get the said friend to arrange freight by sea to a family memebr or trusted friend who will accept the delivery - you dont want a return to sender type situation
      5. Wait.
      6. Shave, shower, and celebrate your cheap return!
      • Baked beans and tinned fruit in a sealed wooden box? You were the kid burning ants with a magnifying glass as a kid, aye pointless?

  • You can go To USA first and then come back to Australia which I reckon can save you few hundreds than just taking one straight flight

Given Jetstar flies from Hawaii and you pay only half the return fare with them you can investigate fares from Sth Am to Hawaii.

Now if you have any FF miles this is the best way to use them, as they are used up on one way flights at half the rate of round trip flights.

Eg FF trip from Sth Am to USA or even Hawaii and then Jetstar, or even all the way to Oz depending on miles you have.

Just need to do the math yourself. Had a family of 5 to return from living in the US and we used FF miles to return. 3 of us went via Hong Kong as at that time there was a FF mileage redemption promo. (Jetstar wasnt flying at that time)

    Good luck

    • No direct flights exist from Hawaii to south am.

      • Correct. you have to fly via USA mainland. I wasn't going thru all the legs they need to take, just giving option for cheaper flights.

I did keep in mind their Ozbargainers style "offer" :)

i'm quite happy to take some crazy 5 city stop over too

also depends where in Sth America they are flying from

  • Perhaps try a skyscanner search like this:

    http://www.skyscanner.com.au/transport/flights/br/au/cheapes…

Probably better if you can find an airline sale like this one:

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/186609

  • Buy a return ticket.

  • If you can wait until December, Air New Zealand is starting direct flights from Buenos Aires to Auckland…

    http://www.airnewzealand.com.au/press-release-2014-air-new-z…

Also I put the wrong skyscanner link above. Try this instead:

  • I'd cross back to the US (rent a car?) and possibly take advantage of the frequent Air NZ sales or you can go on Cathay via Hong Kong

    • There is no road between Columbia and Panama. Only Swamp and jungle. But I heard there is a barge. Would be surprised if any car rental company would cater for one way rental between the two continents. Might be awesome if you bought a car though.
